ABSTRACT
The New York City Neighborhood Names point file was created as a guide to New York
City’s neighborhoods that appear in the “New York: A City of Neighborhoods” map poster
and webpage. Best estimates of label centroids were established at a 1:1,000 scale, but
are ideally viewed at a 1:50,000 scale.

PURPOSE
These points were created by the Department of City Planning as a guide to the locations
of neighborhood labels found on the Department of City Planning's "New York: A City of
Neighborhoods" poster and webpage.

LINEAGE
LINEAGE STATEMENT
The “New York: A City of Neighborhoods” Neighborhood Names point file has undergone
minor revisions since the 2010 release. These revisions include the addition of new
neighborhood name labels, modification of existing neighborhood names centroids
positions, deletion of neighborhood name labels, or updates to neighborhood names. A
description of the changes is detailed below:

Additions: Nine new neighborhood names appear on the 2014 edition of the City of
Neighborhoods Poster. These names include Allerton, Bronxdale, and Kingsbridge
Heights in the Bronx; Erasmus in Brooklyn; Hudson Yards in Manhattan; Bayswater,
Hammels, and Queensbridge in Queens; and Fox Hills in Staten Island.

Modified Positions: For increased positional accuracy, label centroids for the following
neighborhood name labels were modified to coincide with the approximate center of the
feature: Carroll Gardens and Cypress Hills in Brooklyn; Flushing in Queens; and
Greenridge and Woodrow in Staten Island.

Deletions: Navy Yard in Brooklyn is now a place name and not a neighborhood name.

Name Updates: Four neighborhood names have been updated. South Corona in Queens
is identified by Corona. The neighborhood located between Rockaway Park and Arverne
in Queens CD 14 is identified as Rockaway Beach. Downtown Flushing, also in Queens,
was changed to Flushing. High Bridge in the Bronx is now identified as Highbridge.
