Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

In an economy, market pressures drive business organizations and they

need to include in their goals-improved quality and productivity, greater flexibility,

continuous innovation and the ability to change to respond rapidly to market needs

and demands. Thus, in todays intensely competitive and marketplace, maintaining

a competitive advantage by becoming a low-cost leader or a differentates entails

having a highly commited and competent workforce. Competitive advantage lies

not once in differentiating a product or service or in becoming a low-cost leader but

in also being able to tap the organizations special skills or core competencies and

rapidly respond to customer’s needs and competitors move. In other words,

competitive advantage lies in the management ability to consolidate corporate

wide technologies and production skills into competencies that empower individual

business to adopt quickly to changing opportunities.

Organizations have been forced to re-evaluate the importance of human

resources due to the transition from a labor intensive approach to a more

knowledge driver approach of the business world. As explained by Greer (2000),

there is greater recognition of the fact that a competitive advantage and

distinguished competency can be achieved through developing employee skills,

developing unique organizational culture and developing effective management

systems.

Basically, there are some ways in which people can help support your

developmental business growth, first they can help you get your work done. They

do this by coaching and directing you as you learn new strategies. They can also

introduce you to those who can help you complete and respond to your plan.

Second, people can help advance your career. They accomplish this by giving you

challenging situations, by sponsoring you for stretch assesment and promotions,

and by protecting and advising you when you are in high risk situation.

Business strategies is the second of organizational strategy. It is

concerned with how a firm competes in each of it’s businesses in order to achieve

its goal in the marketplace. A business is characterized as market or segment of

the market and includes all product and services that can be viewed as close

subtitle or attend to similar customer needs. Consequently, business strategies

also termed as competitive strategies are formulated at the level of the strategic

business unit or at the firm level. Following the initial characterization of the

strategy conduct, business strategy require decision regarding competitive

orientation of the firm.

When it comes to strategy, corporate strategy and business strategy are

relatives but, they still have differences. Corporate strategy deals with a

corporation as a whole. It determines the industries are markets in which the firm

is active, as well as the manner in which management coordinates its activities

and transfers resources and capabilities between each product lines and business

units.

Different factors affects and contribute to a business success, it is a big

part in achieving goals and gain greater career and life satisfaction, achieve better

performance, acquire more learning and skill development and experience less

stress than people who don’t have this important developmental relatonships.

Different factors include: social factors, market factors, raw materials,

infrastracture, and other factors that can possibly affect the business success.

According to EWOH (2014), women entrepreneurs in developing countries

have little or no access to policy makers which makes them incapable to advocate

policies that are in favor of their business. In large companies, men can easily

influence policies and decisions favorable to them since they have access to policy

makers who are perceived as their peers. Moreover, most women in developing

countries are not part of leadership positions in mainstream business organization.

This limit their contributions in policy making decisions through lobbying and

negotiation.

Based on George N. Root III, when an entrepreneur opens a business a

great deal of work goes into making that business a success. An experienced

business professional will tell you that success in business is planned and does

not happen by accident. However, there are several factors that can contribute to

the success of a business, and by understanding what they are and how they work

together can held your business succeed.
