NDA/NA - AN INTRODUCTION
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts NATIONAL DEFENCE
ACADEMY (NDA) & NAVAL ACADEMY (NA) EXAMINATION twice a year.
The examination is usually conducted in April (NDA/NA I) and September (NDA
II). The exam is conducted for 10+2/HSC candidates who wish to pursue careers
in Indian Army, Navy and Air Force as commissioned officers. NDA/NA is held
every year as per the vanacies which arise in the armed forces. Thus, there is no
fixed number of posts for which the exam is conducted - it keeps on changing every
year. As per rough estimates, 300 to 600 vacancies are filled through NDA/NA
exam every year.

NDA/NA ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA


Aspiring candidates must know that there is a set of eligibility requirement which
they need to meet before applying for NDA/NA. These eligibility conditions
include requirements related to nationality, age, number of attempts, physical
eligibility including height, weight, etc. Check detailed eligibility below.

NDA/NA Eligibility Criteria pertaining to Nationality


(i) a citizen of India, or
(ii) a subject of Bhutan, or
(iii) a subject of Nepal, or
(iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the January 1, 1962 with the
intention of permanently settling in India, or
(v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka
and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tan-
zania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of
permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to the above categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v)
above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued
by the Government of India. Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be neces-
sary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

NDA/NA Eligibility Criteria pertaining to Age:


Candidates must be born between July 2, 1999 to July 1, 2002. These 2 dates are
included in the age criteria. The date of birth must be recorded in the matricula-
tion or higher secondary examination certificate.
●● Minimum Age: 16.5 years
●● Maximum Age: 19.5 years

Marital Status: Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for NDA exami-
nation.

NDA/NA Eligibility Criteria pertaining to Educational


Qualification:

●● For Army Wing of National Defence Academy: Candidates must have passed Class 12.
●● For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet
Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: Passed class 12th (conducted by a State

Education Board or a University) with Physics and Mathematics as subjects.


●● Candidates appearing in the Clas 12 or equivalent are also eligible to apply. Those
appearing in the class 11 exam are not eligible.

Physical Standards:
Candidates must be physically and mentally fit. Those who have resigned or
withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the training academies of armed
forces are not eligible. A number of candidates are rejected on medical grounds at
the SSB Interview.

Height Requirement
The minimum acceptable height is 157 cm for Army, Navy and Naval Academy
while 162.5 cm for Air Force. For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of
North-Eastern the minimum acceptable heights will be 5 cm less.

NDA/NA APPLICATION FORM


Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases NDA/NA II Application
Form in first week of June, while the application form for NDA I is released in
the third week of January. The application form is released in online mode. The
application form of NDA/NA comprises two parts – Part I and II. Candidates
have to complete both parts. In Part I, candidates have to fill basic information. In
Part II, candidates have to pay the application fee, select the examination centres,
upload photograph and signature and make the declaration. The application fee
can be paid both online and offline.

How to fill NDA Application Form?

NDA Registration – Part 1

The part 1 registration comprises the following stages:

Name: Candidates need to enter their name in NDA application form as recorded
in the matriculation/secondary examination certificate. Applicants should not
prefix such as Mr. or Ms. etc.
Gender: Select gender male or female from the dropdown menu.

Date of Birth: The date of birth should be entered in DD/MM/YYYY format as


recorded in matriculation/secondary examination certificate.
Father’s and Mother’s Name: Do not use any prefix such as Shri or Dr. etc.

Nationality: Select nationality from the drop down menu.


Marital Status: Only unmarried male candidates are eligible to fill NDA applica-
tion form

Community: Select category SC/ST/OBC/General from the drop down menu.

Fee Remission: Fee exemption is admissible for SC, ST sons of JCOs/NCOs/Ors

Educational Qualification: Applicants need to select their educational qualifica-


tion – if passed Class 12/HSC or appearing for the same.

Address and Email ID: Candidates should enter their address carefully as all
communications regarding the examination will be sent to the same. Along with
the address, candidates have to enter their contact number and email ID.
After entering all details in the Part 1 registration, candidates have to click on the
continue button to proceed to Part 2 NDA registration.

NDA Registration – Part 2

The part 2 of NDA application form comprises three stages:


●● Fee payment
●● Selection of examination centre
●● Uploading of photograph and Signature

Fee Payment: Candidates can pay NDA application form fees both online and
offline. The fee for general and OBC category is Rs 100. SC, ST, Sons of JCOs,
NCOs, ORs are exempted from fee payment.

Mode of payment: Applicants can pay their fees in any branch of SBI by cash or
through net banking, Visa/MasterCard/Rupay Credit/Debit Card. Those paying
the fees by cash should print the system generated pay-in-slip during Part II reg-
istration and deposit the fee.

Selection of examination centre: The list of examination centres are prescribed


by UPSC. Candidates have to select the centres for written examination from the
given lists of exam cities. Allotment of centres will be done on first-apply-allot
basis therefore candidates are advised to apply early.

Uploading of photograph and Signature: The scanned photograph and signa-


ture should be in the .jpg format. The file should not exceed 40 KB and must not
be less than 3 KB in size for photograph while it is 1 KB for the signature.

At the bottom of the application page, candidates have to make the declaration by
clicking the box and submit the form. Registration ID will be generated. To view
application, candidates have to click the link ‘View/Print’.

Correction/Editing in NDA Application Form

Candidates can make correction in the details entered in the NDA application
form within the dates prescribed. ‘Update’ button is provided at the bottom of
application form to move back and make correction in the information entered by
the candidates. Check the particulars carefully as no edit or change in the informa-
tion will be allowed after final submission.

NDA/NA EXAM CENTRES


NDA/NA exam centres reflect the names of the cities where the entrance test is
conducted. One city may have multiple exam centres. The list of exam centres
below may keep changing and vary from year to year, however there is not much
difference or changes in the exam centres cities every year. Some of the exam

HOW TO PREPARE FOR NDA/NA?


Before making their preparation plan for NDA/NA, it’s important that candidates
have a good understanding about the exam pattern, syllabus and sample papers or
previous years question papers. Knowing these aspects well helps the candidates
in many ways like having the understanding of the kind of questions that come in
the paper, marking scheme, topics from where the questions are asked, etc. Sample
papers help the candidates in developing speed and accuracy. Know about NDA/
NA exam pattern, syllabus and sample papers below.

NDA/NA EXAM PATTERN


The exam pattern of NDA/NA is prescribed by Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC). With the help of NDA exam pattern, candidates can get idea regarding
the number of subjects, time duration, total marks and marking scheme. Know all
other details below.

Highlights of NDA 2018 Exam Pattern


●● Stages of exam – The examination is conducted in two stages - Written and SSB
Interview. Those qualifying the written examination are called for SSB Interview.
Final selection is done based on a candidate’s performance in written examination and
interview.
●● Mode of Exam – The written examination as per NDA exam pattern is conducted in
Pen and Paper mode
●● Duration of the exam – The total time duration of the exam is 5 hours. Each paper is
held for 2 1/2 hours.
●● Number of papers – There are two papers – Paper 1 Mathematics and Paper 2 General
Ability Test. The GAT section is further divided into two sub-sections – English and
General Knowledge.
●● Number of questions – Mathematics section carries 120 questions while GAT will
have 150 questions.
●● Type of questions – All questions in both the subjects will be objective type. There will
be four options out of which candidates have to select one as correct answer.
●● Language of question paper – The medium of question paper will be in English and
Hindi
●● Marking Scheme – For each correct answer in Mathematics candidates will get 2.5
marks. Candidates for correct answer in GAT will get 4 marks. For wrong answer, 1/3 of
the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty. If a candidate mark more
than one answer then it will be treated as wrong answer. If any question is left blank then
no mark will be deducted as penalty.

●● Total marks – Marks allotted for Mathematics section is 300 while it is 600 for GAT
according to NDA exam pattern. The English part of GAT section carries 200 marks
while the General Knowledge part carries 400 marks. NDA Exam Pattern

SSB Interview
The SSB Interview carries total 900 marks. The SSB interview procedure consists
of two stages - stage I and stage II.
Only those candidates who qualified stage 1 can appear for stage 2.

Stages of SSB Interview


The stage 1 of SSB Interview comprises Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests
and Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT).
The stage 2 of SSB Interview comprises Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology
Tests and the Conference. These tests are conducted over a period of 4 days.

YEARS QUESTION PAPERS
NDA/NA sample papers are the questions which are similar to that of the actual
questions papers, while the previous years question papers are the actual question
papers of NDA/NA from the previous years. Practising from the sample papers

NDA/NA ADMIT CARD


Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases the admit card of NDA II and
I separately around a month ago before the test day. The admit card is released
in online mode only. Candidates can download their NDA admit card either by
registration number or roll number. The admit card is released for registered
candidates only. Candidates must carry one photo-identity proof along with NDA
admit card to the exam centre on the exam day. Read details below.

How to download NDA/NA Admit Card?


Step 1: Click on the link ‘ NDA admit card’ to be provided on this page
Step 2: Read the instructions and then click on ‘Yes’ button
Step 3: Choose the option – By registration number or roll number
Step 4: By registration number - Enter registration number, date of birth and
captcha code if candidates want to download through the same.
Step 5: By roll number - Enter roll number, date of birth and captcha code
Step 6: Click on ‘Submit’ button after entering details
Step 7: NDA admit card will appear on the screen
Step 8: Download and take its printout

What if there is technical problem while downloading

●● Candidates should not download their NDA admit card on mobile or other gadgets.

What if I forget my Registration number?


Candidates can retrieve their registration number through the following method.
●● Click on the link ‘Forget RID’ provided on the admit card login page
●● Enter details like name, father’s and mother’s name, date of birth and Captcha code
●● Click on ‘Submit’ button
●● Candidate’s RID will be sent to their registered email id and mobile number.

card?
Candidates who have not received their admit card or there is mistake in name,
date of birth, father’s and mother’s name etc should immediately contact the
facilitation counter of UPSC. While reporting for any issue, candidates have to
submit following details.

NDA/NA ANSWER KEY


Answer key of NDA/NA is important from the perspective of knowing the correct
answers to the questions taken in the exam. Candidates can check the answer key
of NDA/NA and calculate their marks in the test.

Know the process to download NDA Answer Key?

The answer key of NDA is available in online mode, in PDF format.

●● To download the answer key, candidates have to click on the link ‘NDA answer key’ on
the official page.
●● The answer key is released separately for all sets of test booklets as per subjects.
●● Candidates have to select the set provided to them during exam for Mathematics and
GAT.
●● Download and compare responses from UPSC NDA/NA answer key.

NDA/NA Answer Key by UPSC


The official answer key of NDA/NA by UPSC is released far later than the coach-
ing institutes. The answer key of NDA/NA I and II is released after the result
announcement in August/September and July/August (of the next year) respec-
tively.

NDA/NA Answer Key by Coaching Institutes


Prior to the release of official answer key, some coaching institutes release the
answer key of NDA/NA I and II a few hours after the exam concludes. Some of the
Coaching institutes which release NDA/NA answer key are Major Kalsi, Cavalier,
Gyan Sagar Institute, Indus Academy etc.

NDA/NA RESULT
Union Public Service Commission announces NDA/NA I and II result in July and
November respectively, while the final result will be declared in May. The result
of NDA is declared for those candidates who take the test. NDA result reflects roll
numbers of only those candidates who qualify in the written examination. The
NDA result is released in the form of a pdf file. After the result for written exam of
NDA I is announced, Service Selection Board conducts interview for the qualified
candidates to analayse their intelligence and personality.

What after NDA/NA Result of Written Exam?


Candidates who will qualify the written examination of NDA are called for next
round of selection i.e. SSB Interview. The Service Selection Board conducts
interview in two stages, candidates who will qualify stage I tests will be eligible
for stage II tests.

●● Stage I of SSB Interview will be based on Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests which
includes - Picture Perception * Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates who will
score qualifying marks in both tests will be shortlisted for next round.
●● Stage II of SSB Interview includes Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology
Tests and the Conference to be conducted in as many as four days.
●● The personality test of selected candidates will be conducted by three different examin-
ers i.e. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psycholo-
gist. Candidates may note that there are no separate weightage for each test.
●● The marks for personality test will be allotted by examiners after evaluating overall
performance of candidates in all tests only.
●● Also, the marks for Conference Test of stage II will be allotted on basis of candidates
performance in GTO tests, Interview and Psychology test and final decision of the
examination board. All the tests of stage II have equal weightage as decided by the
conducting body.
●● The various tests of stage II i.e. IO, GTO and Psychology test are designed in order to
analyse qualities like Officer Like Qualities and also training ability in a candidate.
●● Candidates who are recommended by SSB after conducting these test are finally
selected for admissions.

NDA/NA Final Result


The exam conducting authority also releases a final merit list for qualified can-
didates written examination and Interview tests of NDA. The mark sheets for
NDA (after conducting SSB Interviews) is available within 15 days from the date
of publication of the NDA final result. Candidates can download their mark sheet
for NDA within 30 days of result announcement.The final selection for admission
to the Army, Navy, Air Force of the National Defence Academy and 10+2 Cadet
Entry Scheme of Indian Naval Academy is made on basis of number of post avail-
able as well as subject to eligibility, medical fitness and merit-cum-preference of
the candidates.

NDA/NA CUTOFF
The cut off of NDA is the minimum qualifying marks that candidates have to secure to qualify
the exam and become eligible for next round of selection process. The cutoff is applied at
each stage of recruitment process – written and Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview.
On the basis of NDA cutoff, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) selects deserving
candidates for the recruitment exam. The cutoff for written and SSB Interview is announced
after the declaration of final result. NDA cut off for written examination is calculated out of
900 marks. The final NDA cutoff is based on the marks secured by the last finally recom-
mended candidates in written exam out of 900 marks and SSB Interview out of 900 marks.

Types of NDA Cut off


Sectional cut off: The sectional cutoff is the minimum qualifying percentage that candi-
dates have to score in each section. Candidates have to secure the qualifying percentage in
each subject – Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT). The sectional cutoff differs
year-wise for NDA 1 and 2.

Overall Cutoff: The overall cut off for NDA I and II is calculated out of the total marks. It
is the total marks that candidates have to secure at written and SSB Interview stage to be
selected for admission.

NDA/NA SELECTION PROCEDURE


The selection procedure of NDA is a two stage process – Written test and SSB
Interview. First, candidates have to appear for written examination. Those who
qualify the written test of NDA are called by Services Selection Board for Intel-
ligence and Personality Test. SSB board evaluates intelligence, personality,
compatibility and potential of prospective candidates for Army/Navy wings of
the NDA and 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of Indian Naval Academy. SSB is a two-
stage selection procedure. All the candidates are put to stage-one test on first day
of reporting at Selection Centres/Air Force Selection Boards/Naval Selection
Boards. Only those candidates who qualify the stage one will be admitted to the
second stage/remaining tests. The stage 2 of SSB continues for 4 to 5 days fol-
lowed by medical test of 3 to 4 days. Final selection to Army, Navy and Air Force
wings of National Defence Academy and Naval Academy is done based on candi-
date’s performance in written exam and SSB Interview subjected to the number
of vacancies, eligibility, medical fitness and preferences.

Stages of NDA/NA Selection Procedure


Written Examination
●● This is the first stage of NDA selection procedure. Only those candidates who clears this
stage are eligible to participate in the further rounds of selection process.
●● NDA written exam is a 900 marks test divided into two sections - Mathematics and
General Ability Test.
●● UPSC decides minimum qualifying marks for written examination.
●● Qualifying candidates are called for SSB Interview comprising Psychological Aptitude
Test and Intelligence or Personality test.

SSB Interview
The SSB procedure consists of two stage Selection process - stage I and stage II.
Only those candidates who clear the stage I are permitted to appear for stage II.
The details are given below:

●● Stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception
Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on combination of
performance in OIR Test and PP&DT
●● Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the
Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

●● The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. Interviewing


Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There are no separate
weightage for each test.
●● The marks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance
of the candidate holistically in all the test.
●● Marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the Candidate
in the three techniques and decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.
●● The various tests of IO, GTO and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/absence
of Officer Like Qualities and thei r trainability in a candidate.

NDA/NA Training
●● The selected candidates for the three services viz, Army, Navy and Air Force are given
preliminary training both academic and physical for a period of 3 years at the National
Defence Academy.
●● The training during the first two and half years is common to the cadets of three wings.
All the cadets on passing out will be awarded degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University
Delhi as under:-
●● (a)Army Cadets - B.Sc/ B.Sc (Computer)/ B.A
●● (b)Naval Cadets - B. Tech Degree
●● (c)Air Force Cadets - B. Tech Degree
●● The selected candidates of the Naval Academy will be given preliminary training both
academic and physical, for a period of 4 years at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala.
●● The cadets of 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme will be awarded a B. Tech Degree on successful
completion of training.
●● On passing out from the National Defence Academy, Army Cadets go to the Indian
Military Academy, Dehra Dun, Naval Cadets to Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala and
Air Force cadets to AFA, Hyderabad.
