“Electromagnetic Waves”.

Electromagnetic Waves, these are the expected sub – concepts to be connected to the main
concept:

 Radiation
 Transfer of energy through a field
 Empty Space
 Interact with matter
 Energy can be converted
 Electricity and Magnetism

Demonstration Activity On and Off!

Question(s): Based on the Activity:

1. How did you position the remote control in order to turn on and off?

2. What does this indicate?

3. Give example(s) of an example of electromagnetic waves that is found in your surroundings.

Explain

Expected Answer(s):

1. The remote control should be aimed at the mirror such that the incident beam strikes it at an
angle that will direct the reflected beam towards the TV.
2. It indicates that EM waves can also be reflected just like the mechanical waves.

3. Sunlight and other sources of artificial lights are examples of Electromagnetic waves. Sunlight
travels through a medium and without a medium in order to reach the earth in a form of
radiation.

Guide Question(s): Expected Answer(s):

1. What is an 1. Electromagnetic waves

waves? composed of alternating
2. How electromagnetic electric and magnetic
(EM) waves can be waves.

3. Describe the accelerating charges or
characteristics of changing magnetic fields.
electromagnetic (EM) It is a combination of
waves? electric and magnetic
fields. It can propagate
and travel through an
empty space or a vacuum.
3. Electromagnetic (EM)
waves are transverse
waves. It is composed of a
changing electricity and
magnetic field that are at
right angle to the direction
the waves travel and
perpendicular to each
other.

Wavelength – the distance measured from one crest or from one trough to the second trough

Frequency – number of cycles a wave completes in one second; expressed in Hertz

Energy – the capacity of doing work. It is in the process of transfer from one body to another

Visible Color Spectrum

Note: Ultraviolet and infrared are not visible colors.
They are given as a point of reference.
Color Wavelength mµ Explanation
(billionths of a meter)

Ultraviolet 380-280 The smaller the

wavelength, the
Violet 430-390 smaller the
Indigo 450-440 structures with
which they
Blue 480-460 interact and the
Green 530-490 more powerful
the energy.
Yellow 580-550 Gamma rays
(the size of a
Orange 640-590 nucleus) are
Red 750-650 more powerful
than A.M. radio

Violet at 400
mµ is stronger
Infrared 1000-750 than red at 700
mµ.

Purple!
Find out more about violet (purple), the most powerful color of the rainbow.

Is purple the most supernatural color? Is purple the most supernatural color? Or is it
just a happy color?
Electromagnetic waves arranged in order of their wavelength and frequency is called the
electromagnetic spectrum.

“Brainstorming Activity” Expected Answer(s):

Let the students analyzed
their output based on the 1. The waves in the
guide question(s): electromagnetic spectrum
1. How are the waves in are arranged in order
the electromagnetic based on their frequency
spectrum arranged? and wavelength.
2. How do the waves in 2. The waves in the
the electromagnetic electromagnetic spectrum
spectrum are compared in are compared based on :
terms of: a. Frequency – the
a. frequency waves with high frequency
b. wavelength carries a greater amount
3. Which has the lowest of energy.
frequency? The highest b. Wavelength – the
frequency? waves with longer
4. Which has the longer wavelength carries a lower
wavelength? Which has amount of energy.
the shortest wavelength? 3. The waves with lowest
frequency are the waves
below the red light, the
waves with highest
frequency are the waves
above the violet light.
4. The waves with longer
wavelengths are waves
below the red light, while
the waves with the shorter
wavelengths are the
waves above the violet
light.

1. What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength?

There is an inverse relationship between the frequency and the wavelength of the
electromagnetic waves. In other words, the longer the wavelength, the lower is the frequency
and the shorter the wavelength, the higher is the frequency.

The students will be required to make a “Spectrum Bracelet”

- It is a bracelet that will represent the electromagnetic spectrum.
- They can choose the materials that they wanted to use (recycled materials, local
available materials).
- Each color will represent a certain electromagnetic wave in the spectrum:

White – Waves (Invisible) below the red light (Infrared, microwaves, radio waves)

Visible Light:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet

Black – Waves (Invisible) above the violet light (Ultraviolet, X – rays, Gamma rays)
