Basketball

History and Origin


Basket ball is the only team game that been invented rather than evolved. It was originated by Dr James
Naismith in 1892 at YMCA in Springfield Massachusettes.

Dr Luther Gulick, The dean of Department of Physical Training presented Naismith with a challenged
that an activity be planned that would definitely meet and fulfill the needs and desires of the students,
Thus in late December 1892. The Basket used then was peach basket and the ball-rounded soccer ball.

The first recorded female basketball game took place in March 1892 in the School-Springfield College.
No male spectator were permitted because ladies wore bloomers and in 1899., the first set rules was
devised. Basketball was played or the first time in Olympics Sports in Berlin in Year 1936.

Description of the Game

Basketball is played by two teams of five players each designated as 2 forward, 2guard and 1 center. The
purpose of each team is to throw the ball into the opponents basket and to prevent the other team
from securing the ball or scoring.

The ball maybe passed, thrown, tapped , rolled or dribbled in any direction, subject to the restriction
laid down on the rules of the game. Game is won by outscoring the other team.

Basketball is played in a hard court rectangular in shape 28 meters in length and 15 meters in width, flat
with well defined line which shall free from obstruction, 2 meters away from boundary line that divided
the court into two is called the center line.

The team’s front court is the part of the court between the endline behind the opponent basket and the
neared edge of the center line. The other part of the court, including the center line is teams back court.
Right below the ring the restricted area with the free throw line extended 5.80 m drawn parallel the end
line.

Outside the restricted areas are the three point field goal area mark forming a two arc constructed as a
semi circle with radius of 6. 25m with its center the point floor directly perpendicular to the exact
center of the basket. The rings and net have 25 cm diameter firmly attached to buckboard and lie 3.05 m
horizontally above the floor.

The game consist of two halves of 20 minutes playing point each and interval of 10 minutes between the
halves. It is started by a jump ball in the center circular with referee marking the toss between the
opposing teams. Visiting teams shall have choice in the first half, on neural courts team shall toss for
basket.

The game cannot begin if one of the teams is not on the court with five players ready to play. If the 15
minutes the defaulting team is not present, the other team wins the game by forfeit. If there is a tie at
the end of the game, play is extended 5 minutes more until tie is broke. A shot is made and a goal is
counted when a live ball enters the basket and passes through, field goal within the rainbow territory
counted two points, free throw counts one point while field goal behind the rainbow territory scores
points

Basic Skills
Stance
 Slightly crouch position with knees well bent, head and chin up shoulders slightly forward
 Arms relaxed and elbow bent with fingers spread comfortably at waist level
 One foot slightly ahead of the other, so that the body is comfortable with weight equally distributed

Running
 Lean body forward as knees rise medium height
 Arm action is natural and relaxed and arms swing forward to near shoulder heght and back behind
the hip
Jumping
 Development of leg swing for high accurate jumping is necessary for plying rebounds, tie ball and
jump shots
 The basic jump is made with flexed knees and relaxed arms
 Arms thrust upward as legs straighten and boy extend high as possible

Pivoting
Used when players has possession of the ball and wants to change or reverse direction to elude and
opponent

 One remain in contact with the floor whether pivot is made from a forward or stride position
 The ball is kept close to the body
 Body weights on the stationary foot as the free foot pushed off

Dribbling- is legal method of advancing the ball by oneself as oppose passing it to another player or
shooting for basket. It consist of bouncing the ball on the floor contentiously with one hand
while walking or running down the court.Used to advance the ball , break for basket or
maneuver out of difficulty situation
 Knees and trunk should be slightly flexed, head and eyes forward, utilizing peripheral vision
 Ball propelled with relaxed wrist and little overall arm motion, Done with push not slapping motion
Basic Types of Dribbling
1. High Dribble is a normal dribble, usually used when there is no defenders around you to steal the
ball
2. Low dribble the players keep the ball low to the floor, thus decreasing the area between the
hand and the floor marking it more difficult to steal
3. Speed dribble - dribbling the ball faster than usual while achieving some distance in the court
4. Crossover Switch Dribble- to switch dribbling from one hand to other hand by bouncing the ball
in front of you across t the other side.

Catching-
a. Position of the ball
b. Position of the opposing players
c. Anticipated with elbow away from the body and hands at waist level

Passing - a skillful basketball game hinge on effective passing to maintain position of ball .
a) Chest pass- ball held chest level with fingers spread slightly the center of the ball. Elbows are
flexed and close to the body . As arms are extended the wrist snaps as the ball released. The hand
rotate inward the follow through as the thumb point downward and fingers extended in the
direction of the pass.
b) Two handed shoulder pass- pass made from either shoulder. Ball held in both hand fingers point
upward , feet are side stride position. The arms extended and the wrist snap as the weight shifts to
the point foot opposite throwing hands.
c) Two handed overhead pass ball raised above and behind the head with fingers at side and rear and
thumb beneath the ball. The wrist snaps as elbows fully extended
d) Bounce pass- used for short passed in the scoring area when opponent is be between passer and
receiver. Executed much like chest pass only the ball bounce first before reaching receiver.
e) Underhand pass- made in front of the body or from either hips. Ball hold fingers downward, the
arms extended or the elbows straighten wrist snaps upward as ball is released at waist level.

Goal Shooting- Shooting incorporates al the skills of stance, body balance, finger control and follow
through.
1. Two hand chest shot- ball extended in front of the body at chest level. Fingers point upward, thumbs
two each other. This force of the shot begins as the knees and wrist flex. As the arms extended the ball
upward and forward.
2. One hand jump shot ball held above the head with the left hand in front and the right hand back
and under ball. At height of the jump, the ball us released by the push of the right hand with good use of
fingers wrist.
3. Lay up-often called an angle or under the basket shot. The players moving is fast should carry the
ball with both hands until before shooting. Aim at the spot on the black board, shooting with fingers arm
extended.
Game Strategy

Basketball is game of offensive an d defensive tactics with the ultimate team objective of scoring goals
and preventing opponents from scoring. A team in possession of the ball is the offensive team. The
system of play used by the offensive team depends on the type defense used by the opponent.

1. Defensive Play- Three types:


a) Players to players ( or man to man)
b) Zone
c) combination
Team becomes a defensive as soon as thing forward and guards loose possession of the ball.
When, the forwards become defensive players, they should guard very aggressively, trying to intercept
the ball or make accurate passing difficult.
A. Man to man- a guard is assigned to a specific player according to height, speed and ability
and guard the same player for all defensive play.
B. Zone defense the fundamental principle of zone on the court.
C. Floating a combination of the above defensive play
2. Offensive play the team possession of the ball is offensive team. Since a team may score only when
in possession of the ball as long as possible.
All plays are developed around good passing and cutting the basket.cutting means that the
players passes and runs directly the basket with the anticipation of getting a quick pass back from team
mate to whom they passed.

Selected Basket Rules


Definition:
The proper conduct of the game demands the full and loyal cooperation of members of both
team, including coaches and substitutes, with officials and their assistant.
Both teams are entailed to do their best to secure victory but they must be done in sprint of
sportsmanship and fair play.
A infringement of this cooperation or of this spirit, when deliberate or repeated should be
considered as technical foul and penalized
Five fouls by Player:
A Player who committed five fouls either personal or technical must automatically leave the
game.
Eight Fouls by team:
After a team has committed eight players fouls, all subsequent player’s fouls shall be penalized
by two free throws.
OFFICAILS:

Types of Fouls:
1. Disrespectfully addressing or contracting and officials
2. Using offensive languages or gestures
3. Baiting an opponent
4. Delaying game by preventing the throw in being taken promptly
5. Not raising hand when foul is called on him
6. Entering the court without reporting to the scorer
7. Grasping the ring
Penalty
1) A foul shall be charged and recorded for each offense and two free throws awarded to
opponent and captain shall designate a free throw.
2) For flagrant and persisted infraction of this article a player shall disqualified, removed from the
game
Personal Foul- Foul which involves contact with an opponent ball is in play alive or dead

Violations:
1) Travelling
2) Backing
3) Stepping
4) Lifting
5) Double Dribble
6) Time Violation:
Three (3”) second violation offensive player staying 3 seconds in opponents restricted area
while his team is in control of the ball
Five( 5’’) seconds violation a time for a team in control of the ball guarded player who does
not dribble, pass, roll the ball, free throw awards and from out of bound throw in.
Eight (8’’) seconds violation- a time for a team in control of the ball to stay with its back
court.
Twenty-four ( 24”) second violation- a team in control of the ball has take a shot for a goal
in its font court within 24 seconds

Definition of Terms

1. Basket- the ring and net through which players attempt to throw the ball
2. Blocking a personal contact which empeded the progress of an opponent not in
possession or the ball
3. Boxing Up- a player with ball is guarded between, two opponents so she cannot pass of
shoot successfully. It result in a foul.
4. Center throw -the method of beginning play at each period and after each goal
5. Charging- foul committed by the player in possession of the ball as he moves the ball or
his body to make contact with the opponents.
6. Foul -a rule infraction by a team or individual which result in one or more throws for the
opponents
7. Free Throw- an unguarded attempt for basket taken behind the free throw line and
awarded to a player as a penalty for opponent.
8. Holding the ball - a violation for a possession of the ball more that three seconds in
court, five seconds out of bounds, or ten seconds taking a foul shot
9. Jump Ball- a ball tossed between two opponents in one of the three restraining circles.
Players attempts to tap the ball to their respective team mates.
10. Obstraction- afoul involving personal conduct with an opponent who is in the act
bouncing, dribbling, passing, shooting, juggling or pivoting.
11. Pivoting- moving the body around in a circle or part of a circle while one foot remains in
contact with the floor.
12. The Ball opposing team or players gain possession with one or two hands of the ball
simultaneously, or one players place both hands securely on a ball already held by an
opponent.
13. Travelling progression such as jumping or walking while in possession of the ball
14. Back court half of the court that contains the opponents basket
15. Front court the half of the court that contains the opponents basket
16. Violation a rule infraction which result in a throw in from out of bounds by the
opposing team. When boat teams have simultaneous violation is resumed by jump ball.
