REFLECTIVE PAPER

TEAM 1
Project evaluation

Throughout the advancement of this assignment, I not only gained an understanding of the importance

of water conservation, but also the significance of team work. Initially, a great deal of time and effort

was concentrated into determining the topic of our project, since our objective was to generate as

many ideas as possible before commencement. The small size of our group, inclusive of only three

members positively rendered to add to our efficiency as well as eliminate any recognition problems. It

enabled us to maximise individual participation while improving group work through creative

modifications with minimal conflict of opinion.Once the topic was established, it was relatively

effortless to finalise our aim, outcome and outline deadlines with the help of our teacher. We often

took turns fixing the nozzles, measuring their effectiveness and talking to people from various

backgrounds, including teachers, help staff, primary students as well as classmates. Having three

members who each spoke a different language at home made it all the more convenient for us to

communicate effectively with help staff who spoke different languages, and educate them about the

nozzle’s functioning since they work with school equipment on a daily basis. I believe our team

adopted a democratic style of working, with more discussion than delegation, without a defined

leader. In my opinion, this made it more open to constructive criticism, improving the quality of our

project. While Abbas was generally occupied with tracking orders of nozzles and fixing them in taps,

Sagar was busy with measuring the effectiveness of the nozzles through various experiments and I

was involved in editing the poster and handing out surveys. The three of us as a team, regularly went

on checks to ensure that the nozzles are well in place and functional. However, some of the

weaknesses of our project procedure included dependency on external sources. Although this step was

inescapable since we had to procure the nozzles from an external vendor, the delayed despatch of one

of the batches lead to a slowdown in the progress and some work got postponed. This could be

overcome in the future by either ordering resources much in advance, or to order them from a more

reliable, authorised source.

Outcome evaluation

The outcome of our assignment was modified from that of a video to an awareness raising poster half

way through our project. This decision was taken unanimously after discerning that it is more suitable

and practical to put up posters all around our school to encourage others to buy these nozzles for their

homes, rather than taking permission to play a video in every classroom during classes. It also meant

reaching a larger audience, since the poster could be put up in common areas such as staff rooms,

while a video cannot be played there. Subsequently, the poster makes room for greater cultural

interaction since it can be revamped to address people in different languages. In order to measure the

effectiveness of our outcome, we circulated surveys to those who did not know about these nozzles in

order to scrutinize the number of people who are willing to purchase the them after reading about their

impact including details of the percentage of water that can be saved, their cost and a link to where

they can buy them from. The results showed an overwhelming response of almost all interviewees

replying affirmatively. This inspired us to deduce that out project victoriously executed our set aim; to

raise awareness about water conserving nozzles, if not propelled all of them to buy it.

Individual learning

Although ‘water shortage’ as an issue may be regarded by many as a generic and hackneyed one,

through the course of this assignment, I have learnt how deep rooted its potency to ravage truly is. It

was nearly daunting to look at all the statistics presented during our initial research and I believe we

all learnt a lot more than we conjectured to. However, I must confess, there is lot more left to learn

about the issue since we have barely touched its surface. Although I am not directly impacted by

water shortage, unfortunately, a myriad of children of my age are. Therefore, I found it obligatory to

foster not just any solution, but one that could be easily implemented and can bring about a change

immediately to battle water shortage as a global issue. Incontrast to that, for India, I maintain that an

exhaustive cost-benefit analysis is statutory to propose a long term solution, especially considering its

developing nature, dearth of funds and the inadequate education system. The cross cultural learning

that I have gained during the due course of our project enlightened me about the staggering existence
of inequality amongst people in different countries as well as within the same nation. After this

experience, I truly believe that education is power. There is so much I can do with the information I

have now, thanks to the diverse research that this project required.
