I. OBJECTIVES
1. To develop formulation, process, and product and packaging designs for Disk-tinction Wheel
showcasing a technology made from recyclable or organic material, parallel to Psychology
Program.
II. BACKGROUND
The Disk-tinction Wheel is a spinning wheel game that is made from recycled plywood. This product
will distinguish the Personality Trait of the player using the Big Five Inventory. This game will give
entertainment to the players and will also provide knowledge about the Big Five Traits.
The name of the product came from the combination of disk and distinction because the shape of the
product is circular like a disk and the game will help the players to distinguish their Personality Trait.
The word disk plus the word distinguish equals to Disk-tinction.
The utilization of recycled materials is currently under demand because of the threat of global warming.
Due to global warming, the climate is shifting in its properties, emphasized in various parts of the world,
causing a potential threat to the environment. One of the factors of global warming is the cutting of trees
to use for constructions, wood furniture, paper, etc. The lesser the trees, the more calamities will come
along our way such as landslides, flood, and as such. Most of the wood waste is biodegradable if
properly disposed of, but if not; it would lead to unnecessary fire risks and permanent damage to the
environment.
The product will help to advocate the people to start using recycled wood as a material for their furniture,
decorations and many more. Using of recycled plywood would be a big help to our environment
because it will lessen the cutting of trees and it will also help to prevent calamities.
Rationale
The age group of this game is 17-24 years old. This game will help the players to determine their
Personality Trait using the Big Five Inventory. The main purpose of this game is to give information and
to widen the understanding of the players about the Big Five Traits.
1. Researches about the active raw material; history of its discovery, its physical and chemical
characteristics, chemical formula, classification, environmental sources, benefits, uses, etc.
C GRADE
-Tight knots to 1-1/2 in. and knotholes to 1 in.,
some splits and discoloration.
D GRADE
-Knots and knotholes up to 2-1/2 in. Some
splits. Generally no repairs.
E. Environmental Source ACACIA MANGIUM
-A plantation wood species available in
FSC™ Certified Imported logs or sawn and/or
noncertified but still legal and sustainable
Philippine supply. Used for flooring, indoor
and outdoor furniture.
FALCATA
-Is a very fast grown Philippine plantation
species which is mainly used for plywood
core, and exported in quite big quantity for
ply-board and packaging materials.
GMELINA
-Is one of the most widespread plantation
species in the Philippines. It is mainly used for
indoor furniture and for doors.
KAMAGONG
-Is an endangered Philippine Ebony type, and
apart from few exceptions it is banned.
FILTRA therefore, is not offering this species,
but offer alternatives for similar looks in
furniture and flooring.
KERUING
-Is well known in the Philippines where it is
called Apitong. This heavy hardwood is
mainly used for truck-flooring, and outdoor
furniture. Contains natural oils which can
sometimes bleed when used outdoors.
MAHOGANY
-Plantation Mahogany in the Philippines can
be Swietenia Macrophylla, or Khaya Ivorensis
species. It is mostly 20-25 years of growth
and mainly used for indoor furniture.
MERBAU
-Is also known as Kwila, or Ipil in the
Philippines. It is a hard species, well suited for
flooring and decking, and also popular for
joinery and table tops.
MOLAVE
-Molave was earlier a traditional Philippine
flooring and furniture species, but now it is an
endangered species.
F. Benefits INCREASED STABILITY
-Plywood offers all the inherent advantages of
the parent wood plus enhanced properties in
its laminated structure.
PANEL SHEAR
-The panel shear of plywood is nearly double
that of solid timber due its cross laminated
structure. This makes plywood a highly
effective material to use in gussets for portal
frames, webs of fabricated beams and as
bracing panels.
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
-Plywood does not corrode and can be used
in chemical works and cooling towers as a
cost-effective, durable material when
preservative treated.

The researchers encountered a problem on where to put the pointer of the Disk-tinction Wheel. After
several trials, the researchers finally decided to put the pointer on the lower part of the wheel.
The researchers also encountered a problem about what material will be used for designing the Disk-
tinction Wheel, on their first trial they plan to use tanzans as a designing material but unfortunately it was
hard to find. The researchers finally decided to use nails and drinking straw, they put 2 nails on every
slice (16 slices) of the wheel and wrap a drinking straw around it.

VI. CONCLUSION
In pursuit of finding a psychologically meaningful resource outlet for waste materials in a form of a
game for audiences suited for children (and to an extension, teenagers), we discovered that the idea
of a “Disk-tinction Wheel” would be a relatively appropriate outlet for waste materials. Its relatively
convenient material choices can also be replaced with other materials that can fit the purpose, which
would be the point of a project such as this.
As for the operational utility (the game), we found out that despite its relative complexity on its full
function (the application of the Big 5 personality trait test and the specific game mechanics), it did not
require the full function to be of utility to children, especially of those ages below 7, as the children of
that age interact in simple and shallow methods towards the product and is still able to be of utility as
a game for children (providing stimuli and allowing play mechanisms of children contributes to their
psychological growth). Young children of exceptional comprehension ability can also be detected
through observation of how they play with the product (as young children are expected to play it in a
simple manner, a complex compartment within the game allows the probability of it attracting young
children whose comprehension extends to the complex part of the game).
VII. RECOMMENDATION
We, the researchers, recommend to future researchers to follow the pattern of a combination of both
simple and complex ways to “play” with the product that can still be of psychological utility on both
methods. This form of consideration allows the emphasis of psychological utility on multiple age groups,
and also for detecting exceptional individuals (young children). We also advise the emphasis of structural
designs that can be replaced with multiple materials, as this allows the recyclability and the choices of
materials to be used for construction to be wider, and much more suited to the role of a product that is
able to use waste materials.
