LEARNING REPORT

1. I along with the other officers and employees of BDL were trained on surface
NDT (Non Destructive Testing) Methods (Magnetic Particle Testing and Liquid
Penetrant Testing) out of the four main NDT methods (Magnetic Particle
Testing, Liquid Penetrant Testing, Ultrasonic Testing and Radiography
Testing) at Indian Society for Non Destructive Testing, Guindy, Chennai from
13th December 2018 to 20th December 2018.
2. On 21st and 22nd December, we were asked to give one practical examination
and two theory examinations on each of the two surface NDT methods (MPT
and LPT) as required for ASNT-TC-1A Level-II certification.
3. During the training, we gained a handful experience/knowledge on working
principles, Methods, techniques, task performing and applicability of surface
NDT methods on different type of materials/wrought products/components.
4. The surface NDT methods are useful in detecting the surface and sub-
surface discontinuities such as pin holes, blow holes, cold shuts, laps, seams,
welding cracks, laminations, fatigue cracks, crater cracks, bursts, hot tears
etc. in Raw Material/finished components/in-service components.
5. To detect internal discontinuities, Ultrasonic and Radiography tests are to be
used.
6. The training is satisfactory and now, we are able to perform the task, write
down the work instructions to perform the task, interpret and evaluate the
indications of discontinuities and generating a report based on the technique
and method.
