Impact of Work Immersion towards the Academic Performance of the Grade 12

Learners

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Background of the Study

The transition from being a learner to being part of the working class could be

a change to new graduates. This is why on-the-job training and immersion are

provided by educational institutions to help prepare students explore their chosen

careers and acquire 21st- century skills.

Immersions prepare learners for the real world by training them how to work

in a company and eventually excel in a specific career. The school needs to ensure

that its learners gain various competencies that would have these future professionals

ready for employment. According to the Department of Education (DepEd) Order No.

4 s. of 2015 work immersion also refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS)

curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands- on experience of work simulation which

the Grades 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace

setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the supervision

of the school Head and the designated personnel of the partner. Immersion is done

outside the school campus in a "work place immersion venue," defined as "the place

where work immersion of students is done such as offices, factories, shops and project

sites".

Moreover one of the goals of the goals of the K to 12 basic education

programs is to develop in learners the competencies of work ethics and values

relevant to pursuing further education and or joining. The world of work in order that

the nations development target will be realized and to achieve greater congruence

with the basic education, work immersion is a required subject that has been

incorporated in the curriculum Trade Congress of the Philippines (2015). DepEd has

introduced the K to 12 basic education reform programs that includes Senior High

School (SHS), with the major objective of ensuring that the graduates of basic

education are ready for employment, entrepreneurship and higher learning.

Magno (2018) stated that they will be competent to their respective field of

interest and they will be skillful and knowledgeable enough to help suffice the

economic needs of the Philippines especially in the manpower field. The government

comes up to implementing work immersion that they will be conducted depending on

what the learners' purposes or needs.

On the other hand learners will know about the work ethics, will gain

knowledge about the safety in the workplace, the rights, responsibilities, learning

effective way to resolve conflicts among coworkers and the work will not be that hard

for them if they apply at the same or related company. Rarely are OJT students

expected to produce the same products that regular employees produce. If that's the

case, how are these students going to learn prior to their expectations with these

experts that are going to teach them to be future professional.

Immersion is focuses on education and its role in shaping the future of

students in K to 12 Curriculum in response to global competitiveness particularly in

ASEAN economic community by 2015. Ramos (2015) stated that the literature will

also discuss with issues about job mismatch, competitiveness and marketability or

employ ability. At this pace of this changing society and economy a lot of actions
should take place. They have to face a lot of challenges especially educators who are

being asked to do more with less due to rapidly evolving technologies and ongoing

shifts in global economy and demography. A successful education system will need to

be of paramount importance if a multicultural society to succeed and prosper in the

future. Education is a gateway to a better job and greater earning potential.

Based on the study of Valley (2015) work immersion program the Willow

Valley Work Immersion (WIP) focuses on helping young adults with disabilities

make a transition from school to productive adult life. This unique one-year

immersion program serves students with disabilities who are in their last year of High

School. With the goal of competitive employment, each learner receives classroom

instruction and hands-on experience through internships in as many as three

departments within the Willow Valley communities. Through their work immersion

experiences, students also develop employ ability, social, and independent living

skills educational institutions are expected to prepare students for employment or

practice of profession. For instance, a study on employ ability skill of business

students recommended that educational practices and activities should include those

that will enhance the skills of students in critical thinking and problem solving,

systematic information management, group leadership and motivation, and plan or

project development and implementation.

Furthermore, Work immersion is part and parcel of the K to 12 Basic

Education Program to equip SHS graduates with values, knowledge, and skills that

communities, business, and industries need through its four exits: higher education,

entrepreneurship, employment, or middle-level skills development.

The immersion program has become one of the most popular and meaningful

parts of community engagement at Rollins College for many faculty, staff, and

students.

The Immersion program at Rollins College is rooted in the community

engagement and leadership, seeking to broaden students’ understanding of the world

through exposure to new environments and hands on learning experiences. “Ninety to

ninety five percent of Immersion participants either agree or strongly agree that

immersion experiences have an impact on them to say it is powerful would be an

understatement” according to Meredith Hein.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the impact of work immersion towards the academic

performance of the Grade 12 learners.

Specifically, it seeks answer to the following:

1. What is the impact of work immersion towards the academic performance of the

Grade 12 learners?

2. What are the experiences of the Grade 12 learners during the work immersion?

3. What are the suggestions or activities that may help for the improvement of work

immersion?

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research design, population and locale of the study,

data collection instrument, data collection procedure, and treatment of the data.

Research Design

Aims at bringing into surface the answers to the specific questions raised, the

descriptive survey method of investigation will be used in the study. The descriptive

method attempts to collect quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis

of the population sample. This will be the appropriate method in order to answer the

questions concerning the current status of the subject of the study. The responses of

the respondents will be compared to come up with a better analysis of the situation

under study.

The primary data gathering tool will be a questionnaire designed to provide

information to answer the specific problems raised. The data that will be gathered will

be presented using tables and texts. Influential statistics will be used in the analysis

and interpretation of data.

Population and Locale of the Study

The grade 12-polite learners of Sto. Tomas National High School will be the

target population of the study.

The target respondents will consists of 20 learners coming from grade 12-

polite Senior High School. The researchers choose 20 learners from the section of 12-

Polite because only the section of 12-Polite who is under the strand of home

economics had gone under the work immersion.

Data Collection Instrument

The survey questionnaire will be used as the main instrument in determining

the impact of work immersion towards the academic performance of grade twelve

learners. The survey questionnaire will contain questions that generated information

about impact of work immersion towards academic performance such as the good or

bad experiences they encountered and the possible activities /suggestions that may

help improve the work immersion for the next generation. The researchers will

personally administer the survey questionnaire to the grade 12 polite learners who

serve as respondents.

Data Collection Procedure

The researcher will seek permission from the principal before the admin-

istration of the questionnaires.

The researchers will distribute the questionnaires to the respondent and will

retrieve the questionnaires as soon as they have answered. Responses will be tallied

and analyzed using descriptive measures and generalizations.

Treatment of Data

To determine the impact of work immersion towards the academic

performance of the grade twelve learners, the researchers will analyze all the content

and discourse analysis data by collating every answer related to the data that will be

collated through survey questionnaires. After which, the researchers will extract

themes and patterns that emerged from the respondents answers regarding their

experiences. Results will be evaluated for pattern extracting from the experiences and

perspective of the respondents.

Lastly the researchers will select clear and concise responses/ answer from the

respondents that will be utilized in describing impact of work immersion towards

academic performance.

Sir:

A blessed day!

The researchers from grade 12-Polite are conducting a research about the

impact of Work Immersion towards the Academic Performance of the grade 12

learners. Inclined with this the researchers would like to ask for your permission to

allow them use grade 12-Polite learners as their respondents. The findings of the study

will be used to help not just the next batch of learners who will undergo work

immersion but also the school to be prepared.

Thank you very much!
