Some types of coronaviruses are serious, though.

About
858 people have died from Middle East respiratory
syndrome (MERS), which first appeared in 2012 in Saudi
Arabia and then in other countries in the Middle East,
Africa, Asia, and Europe. In April 2014, the first American
was hospitalized for MERS in Indiana and another case was
reported in Florida. Both had just returned from Saudi
Arabia. In May 2015, there was an outbreak of MERS in
Korea, which was the largest outbreak outside of the
Arabian Peninsula. In 2003, 774 people died from a severe
acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak. As of 2015,
there were no further reports of cases of SARS.
But In early 2020, following a December 2019 outbreak in
China, the World Health Organization identified a new
type, 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Viruses are very tiny germs. They are made of genetic material inside of a protein coating.
Viruses cause familiar infectious diseases such as the common cold, flu and warts. They also
cause severe illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, smallpox, and Ebola.
Viruses are like hijackers. They invade living, normal cells and use those cells to multiply and
produce other viruses like themselves. This can kill, damage, or change the cells and make you
sick. Different viruses attack certain cells in your body such as your liver, respiratory system, or
blood.

When you get a virus, you may not always get sick from it. Your immune system may be able to
fight it off.

For most viral infections, treatments can only help with symptoms while you wait for your
immune system to fight off the virus. Antibiotics do not work for viral infections. There are
antiviral medicines to treat some viral infections. Vaccines can help prevent you from getting
many viral diseases.
