Context and Rationale

Students nowadays lived in the digital world where technology became trending. The millennial
generation, have the accessibility to the internet with the use of different mediums such as electronic
gadgets and appliances, that make our life tasks more easier compared to the previous generations. As
time passes by the development of emerging technologies continues, multimedia comes up and
different media platforms were exist such as films, radio, televisions around us, which can be accessed
with the help of computers and many more, that projects visual image containing information.
Multimedia gave a huge contribution in the industry of entertainment, this is where video game started
in which students got hooked. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a multiplayer online battle arena game that
is developed and published by Montoon because of its outstanding accessibility. Because this game is
easily accessible, anyone can play it causing students to spend more time to play than to study and
socialize. This can change the psychological mind set of students such as tardiness, lack of focus, and
anger management issues which degrades their academic performance time management issues are
severely affected too. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena started from the very 7 popular World of
Warcraft which is played on computers and become a great hit to the gamers, more specially, to the
students.

Online gaming is one of the widely used leisure activities by many people. Teenagers who are
playing these online games said that they are playing these games just for fun, to keep away from the
heat of the sun, without knowing that there are a lot of effects of playing these games that are more
than what they think. Playing online games, according to some research is beneficial. It enables the mind
of the players to be more active, especially those puzzle-based games. It helps the player to come up
with decisions in tight situations, especially those adventure games that keep the players to be alert,
active and strategic. Playing these types of games makes the player experienced different feelings
because it is as if the player is really the one taking the challenges.

When you hear about the effect of online games you tend to think about the negative effects first. Like
the fact they are causing addiction, in behavior and in their health and especially to their Academic
Performance. We are surrounded by people that who prefer to spend time alone with their mobile
phones instead of starting conversation with a random stranger or having a quality time to their friends
and families. And Online games consume more and more of our time each day. But think of it, playing
mobile games have positive effects to the players of it especially in mobile legends players. So the
researchers came up to this study to show that there is also effects in online games (mobile legends)
to the Academic Performance of SHS students.

Mobile Legends Game is made by China Bamboo Curtain aka China or China.

Mobile Legends game created by Chinese developer Moonton or Shanghai Moonton

Technology Co., Ltd. Moonton is headquartered in Shanghai, China.(Moonton, Mobile

Legend, 2016). Mobile Legend one type of MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena) is a type

of online game that combines two types of games namely RTS (Real Time Strategy) and
RPG (Role Playing Game) where players run one character from two teams opposite to

the goal to destroy the opponent's headquarters. Each character which is played has a

role with strength and weakness each other so prosecuted for cooperate with team to win

the game (Funk, 2013). Mobile Legends is very popular in demand among various circles.

Starting from adolescence to adulthood, this game is popular especially in Asia. In fact,

until June 23, 2017 total 12,675,696 accounts are known to have downloaded this game

on the Google Play Store. One of developer online game www.steam.com show the

gamers are dominated by teenagers and early adults aged 15-25 years. Mobile legend

very in demand because of how to play very easy and how to play a simple and many

tutorials to play it when first opening the game. Starting from shooting and hitting,

determining the right direction of movement, using the skill, playing with other players, to

how to buy items, besides mobile legend can also play with friends by connecting with

Facebook or email ID so players can play together for work together to win the game and

feel the excitement in this game together. The game comes with a chat in game feature

so we can still communicate with teammates and the opposing team.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to know the perceived effects of Mobile Legends to the academic

performance among the Senior High-school Students.

The researchers wanted to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of;

a. Frequency of playing Mobile Legends

b. Average time span of playing


c. Length of period of playing Mobile Legends. (since they’ve started)

2. How does playing online games affect the academic performance of the students in

relation with:

a. Class Participation

b. Number of Hours spent in Studying

c. Frequency of Absences in Class


CHAPTER II

Methodology

Research Method

This describes the data gathering process and the approaches utilized by the researchers.

The process and approaches includes research locale, research design, research respondents,

research instruments, data gathering procedure, data scoring and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study is a quantitative research type which measures the effects of Mobile

Legends to the academic performance of Senior High School Students.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Naval School of Fisheries SHS building

Research Respondents

This study will be conducted in Naval School of Fisheries and will focus on the

selected SHS students.

Research Instruments
In this study, Interview and Questionnaires will be used to know the subjects and

to be able to come up with the result.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will conduct an interview if they are involved in Mobile Legends

Addiction and after that, questionnaires will be given to the selected respondents.

Data Scoring

The result of the answered questionnaires by the respondents will be analyzed

and tallied using how intense Mobile Legends is in affecting the Academic Performance

of the students.

Statistical Treatment Data

The study only utilizes descriptive statistics to facility in analyzing of Data
