BASKETBALL

 Basketball is played 2 teams of 5 players each. The aim of each team is to score
in the opponent’s basket and to prevent the other team from scoring.
 The basket that is attacked by a team is the opponents’ basket and the basket
which is defended by a team is its own basket.
 The team that has scored the greater number of game points at the end of
playing time shall be the winner.
 There are total of 5 time outs (2 in 1st half and 3 in 2nd half. If there is an OT there
is only 1 TO)
 A one team is consist of 15 people( 5 playing, 7 bench, 3 reserved, 2 assistant
coach, and 1 head coach)

HISTORY
 Basketball was invented in Springfield College by Dr. James Naismith (PE
teacher in NYMC) in 1891. In the beginning a peach basket was used as the
hoop and a soccer ball as the first ball). In 1946 the National Basketball
Association (NBA) was formed. Then in 1996, women began their own
professional league, the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA).

SKILLS
 Dribbling – bouncing the ball with 1 hand using your fingertips instead of your
palm, so that it will rebounds back to yourself (the only legal way to move with
the ball) (high speed or low speed)
 Passing – moving the ball by throwing, bouncing, handing, or rolling it to
another.
 There are essentially two types of passes:

 Air Pass - The pass travels between players without hitting the floor.
 Bounce Passes - The pass is thrown to the floor so that it bounces to
the intended receiver
 Basic Variations:

- Chest Pass
- Bounce Pass
- Overhead Pass
- Wrap Around Pass

 Advanced Variations:

- Baseball Pass
- Dribble Pass
- Behind-the-Back Pass
- Pick and Roll Pass

 Shooting – throwing the ball to make a basket


 Types of shooting:
- Jump Shot
- Lay up
- Dunk
- Free-throws

 Pivoting – stepping once or more in any direction with the same foot while
holding the other foot at its initial point.
 Boxing Out – a player’s position between an opposing player and the basket to
obtain a better rebounding position.
 Rebounding – the recovering of a shot that bounces off the backboard or the
rim.

POSITION
 Each player is assigned a position when playing. This position is usually
determined by the height of a player.

 Center – the tallest player (Position 5)


 Power Forward – Medium Size (Position 4)
 Small Forward – Medium Size (Position 3)
 Shooting Guard – Short Size (Position 2)
 Point Guard- Short Size (Position 1)
SCORING
 A player scores when he manages to throw the ball into the basket, with the
ball passing through the basket above the hoop. Scoring a basket increases
the team’s score by 3, 2, or 1 point.

 2 Point Field Goal – a shot made from anywhere during a play inside 3
point arc.
 3 Point Field Goal – a shot made anywhere outside from the 3 point arc.
 Free Throw – 1 point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind
the free throw line while the clock is stopped.

VIOLATIONS
 Are actions by players that break a basketball rule, can result to a turn over or
score.

 TYPES OF VIOLATION:
 Back Court Violation – once the offensive team has passed
the half court line they cannot dribble or pass back the ball over
the half court line.
 Travelling – if a ball handler step three or more when not
dribbling the ball, the referee can call a violation.
 Double Dribble – occurs when a player stops dribbling and
then attempts to dribble again or if a player attempts to dribble
the ball with two hands.
 Carrying the Ball – occurs when a player dribbles the ball with
their hands too far under the ball (also called palming).
 Offensive Three Seconds – an offensive player cannot remain
in the paint are for more than 3 seconds
FOUL
 Occurs when a defender holds, grabs, or pull an offensive player.
 5 team fouls = free throw

 Short whistle (close palm)

 COMMON FOULS:
 Blocking – occurs when a defender uses their body and makes
contact with an offensive player with established position.
 Charging – when an offensive players runs into a defender who
has an established position.
 Holding – using the hand to interfere with or limit an opponent’s
freedom of movement.
 Illegal Used of Hands – when defenders slaps, hacks, smacks an
offensive player.
 Pushing - occurs when a defender pushes an offensive player or
bumps into the body of the offensive player.
