THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION
OF THE LORD
Dear Parishioners,
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is
always on the 2nd of February. So it’s only
every six years that it’s on a Sunday. That
makes today special.
Over the past weeks we’ve celebrated
special events in the life of Jesus: His
birthday; the Epiphany, His being made
known to the nations; His Baptism in the
Jordan and now His Presentation in the
Temple. It completes the Christmas cycle
of 40 days.
THE BLESSING OF CANDLES AND THE
PROCESSION gives us a chance to re-live in
a symbolic way, what happened in the
Temple.
The prayer of greeting sums up all of what
we celebrate: “Dear brother and sisters,
forty days have passed since we celebrated
the joyful feast of the Nativity of the Lord.
Today is the blessed day when Jesus was
presented in the Temple by Mary and
Joseph. Outwardly he was fulfilling the
Law, but in reality he was coming to meet
his believing people. Prompted by the Holy
Spirit, Simeon and Anna came to the
Temple. Enlightened by the same spirit,
they recognised the Lord and confessed
him with exultation. So let us also,
gathered together by the Holy Spirit,
proceed to the house of God to encounter
Christ. There we shall find him in his Word
and recognise him in the breaking of the
bread, until he comes again, revealed in
glory”.

It is also
worth
reflecting on
the words of
Simeon as he
took Jesus in
his arms and
blessed God
and said:
“Now Master,
you can let your servant go in peace, just
as you promised; because my eyes have
seen the salvation which you have
prepared for all the nations to see, a light
to enlighten the pagans, and the glory of
your people Israel”.
Simeon and Anna are very much like the
Old Testament figures who had looked
forward to the coming of the Messiah, the
Saviour of the world. They are very happy
now because their life-long hopes and
dreams have come through. “The Messiah
is here in my arms”, Simeon might say.
“I can die now a happy man, because I’ve
seen the promised of God fulfilled. This is
the truth that we too must treasure.
But note too, that St Luke in his account,
tells us that the mission of Jesus brings
both suffering and salvation. Even Mary his
mother will suffer. Jesus as a sign will be
rejected by many and this is true today.
We are called to recognise Jesus once again
as our Saviour, our guide and brother.
The lighted candles tell us of the light of
Christ. Darkness and evil are overcome.
We are saved, redeemed and love by
Christ, the light of our World.

FIRST AID COURSE
As part of our efforts of Health and Safety,
we have asked St John’s Ambulance
to conduct a First Aid Course on
Saturday, 29th February from 3-5pm.
The idea is that in case of emergency
anyone would be able to come to the
immediate assistance of the person taken
ill. Such skills are useful to have in any
situation. There are also arrangements
being made for a defibrillator being
available in case of emergency.

are presented with a young couple meeting
two elderly people. This meeting is possible
because Simeon and Anna were waiting for
God to act. Our God belongs to those who
look for him.
