Lesson Idea

Title: What If…

Grade Level: 7th
Content: Mathematics
Standard Addressed: Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add
and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number
line diagram.

Amount of Time: 1 hour

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor
SAMR Level: Modification
Essential Question(s): How would the world be different these different mathematicians?
What other questions can be used when using the Fibonacci sequence? What other topics did
these mathematicians study?
Learning Activity: The students will be broken up into groups and be able to explain the
Fibonacci sequence and how it is used, and any other mathematical uses Fibonacci did in his
career. The students will gain knowledge about the history of Fibonacci and how he popularized
the numerals we use today. The students will use computers to do their research on Fibonacci.
Once the students have gathered their research on Fibonacci, they will use a visual
representation (PowerPoint, poster, etc.…) to display the research.

• Introduction: The students will be broken up into groups and be able to explain the
Fibonacci sequence and how it is used.
• Instruction/Activities: Some activities that the students will do is research on the computer
with their groups. They will also think of new ways that could be used with the Fibonacci
sequence. The students will also be required to make a visual representation of their
project.
• Final Product: The final product will be a PowerPoint, or poster, or any visual design they
want to use to give information on Fibonacci
• Evaluation or deliverable: I will have a rubric that I give to the students and it will cover the
information, presentation, and creativity.
Reflective Practice

• Are there any additional activities or tools that would extend or enhance the lesson idea
above?
➢ One activity that the students can do is use one of the student’s response tools like
Kahoot! Instead of using PowerPoint.
➢ We could show a movie of famous mathematicians and they could pick any of those
mathematicians.

Lesson Idea

➢ I could find a real mathematician that I could have them talk to the students and
explain mathematics in a fun way.
• Could something be added to the activity to extend it to a higher Bloom’s level or
technology level?
➢ The students could change the PowerPoint to an MP4 so it could be made into a
movie and people won’t people won’t have to have PowerPoint to view it. They
could also put their own voices in their presentation.
• Is the project such that it can be published to share with people outside the classroom? If
so, what additions would you make to the lesson idea to make this happen?
➢ The students can post it to their social media accounts so they can have anyone see
their work.
