regarding the circuits shown, equipping and any eventuality. The Application
Examples do not represent customer-specific solutions. They are only intended
to provide support for typical applications. You are responsible for ensuring that
the described products are used correctly. These Application Examples do not
relieve you of the responsibility to use safe practices in application, installation,
operation and maintenance. When using these Application Examples, you
recognize that we cannot be made liable for any damage/claims beyond the
liability clause described. We reserve the right to make changes to these
Application Examples at any time without prior notice.
If there are any deviations between the recommendations provided in these
Application Examples and other Siemens publications – e.g. Catalogs – the
contents of the other documents have priority.

We do not accept any liability for the information contained in this document.
Any claims against us – based on whatever legal reason – resulting from the use of
the examples, information, programs, engineering and performance data etc.,
described in this Application Example shall be excluded. Such an exclusion shall
not apply in the case of mandatory liability, e.g. under the German Product Liability
Act (“Produkthaftungsgesetz”), in case of intent, gross negligence, or injury of life,

deficiency or breach of a condition which goes to the root of the contract

(“wesentliche Vertragspflichten”). The damages for a breach of a substantial
contractual obligation are, however, limited to the foreseeable damage, typical for
the type of contract, except in the event of intent or gross negligence or injury to
life, body or health. The above provisions do not imply a change of the burden of
proof to your detriment.

hereof is prohibited without the expressed consent of the Siemens AG.

Security Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that
informa- support the secure operation of plants, systems, machines and networks.
tion In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber
threats, it is necessary to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic,
state-of-the-art industrial security concept. Siemens’ products and solutions only
form one element of such a concept.
Customer is responsible to prevent unauthorized access to its plants, systems,
machines and networks. Systems, machines and components should only be
connected to the enterprise network or the internet if and to the extent necessary
and with appropriate security measures (e.g. use of firewalls and network
segmentation) in place.
Additionally, Siemens’ guidance on appropriate security measures should be
taken into account. For more information about industrial security, please visit
http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them
more secure. Siemens strongly recommends to apply product updates as soon
as available and to always use the latest product versions. Use of product
versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply latest updates may
increase customer’s exposure to cyber threats.
To stay informed about product updates, subscribe to the Siemens Industrial
Security RSS Feed under http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.

1 Introduction

1 Introduction
Communication tasks
In the field of automation technology the communication of controllers plays a
crucial part. Controllers perform various communication tasks. The table below
illustrates these communication tasks.

The following document is listing different technical strategies to enable CPU-CPU

communication between automated production units.
In this document three communication protocols are described briefly. For further
detailed description, please refer to the individual communication document.
 CPU – CPU based on PROFINET communication
 CPU – CPU based in Open IE communication
 CPU – CPU via SIMATIC Net OPC Server

Required knowledge
Basic knowledge about configuring SIMATIC and/or SIMOTION controllers using
the STEP 7 or SIMOTION SCOUT engineering system, setting up SIMATIC Net
OPC server and SIMATIC WinCC is required.

2 Communication protocols

2 Communication protocols
CPU-CPU communication
To realize CPU-CPU communication different options are available for the users.
To select a best solution depends on various factors. Based on these factors a
solution described in this document can be selected.

3 PROFINET Communication

3 PROFINET Communication
3.1 CPU-CPU communication via I-Device
The I-Device functionality has been available since SIMATIC V3.2 and SIMOTION
V4.1.1 in order to exchange data between different SIMATIC and SIMOTION
controllers via PROFINET functions.
I-Device enables very simple and fast controller-controller communication that can
take place at the same time and on the same bus. I-Device allows accessing the
CPU IO address image. PDI interface can be exchanged via CPU process image.

4 Open IE Communication

4 Open IE Communication
4.1 CPU-CPU communication via TCP
Open User Communication is the name given to a program-controlled
communication process for communicating via the integrated PN/IE interface of the
S7-1200/1500 and S7-300/400 PLCs. Different connection types are available for
this communication process.
The main feature of Open User Communication is its high degree of flexibility in
terms of the data structures transferred. This allows open data exchange with any
communicating devices providing they support the connection types available here.
Since this communication is controlled solely by instructions in the user program,
event-driven connection establishment and termination is possible. Connections
can also be modified by the user program during runtime.
For CPUs with an integrated PN/IE interface, the TCP, UDP, and ISO-on-TCP
connection types are available for Open User Communication. The communication
partners can be two SIMATIC PLCs or a SIMATIC PLC/SIMOTION and a suitable
third-party device.

4.2 Principle of the TCP Communication via CPU

integrated PN/IE interface

Individual instructions for sending and receiving data or for establishing or
terminating connections the following standard blocks can be used.
 TCON (connection establishment)
 TDISCON (connection termination)
 TSEND (TCP or ISO-on-TCP: Sending)
 TRCV (TCP or ISO-on-TCP: Receiving)
For further detailed description, please refer to the individual communication
document.
