Background of the Study

Introduction

Dr. Jose P. Rizal rested his hopes that the youth will be instrumental in nation

building when he remarked that they are the hope of the motherland. This implies that

when they plan for their career choice, they should also consider factors like the country’s

economy and hence, synchronize their career choices benefits the country as well.

(Grade 12 Career Guidance, Module 5: p. 71). Now that they are about to exit from Senior

High School, they should be more conscientious that they are critical in contributing to

making the Philippines progressive. As such, the learners are highly enjoined to commit

themselves to live up to their personal mission statement in making a difference to other

people’s lives and give a contribution to the community at large. (p. 72)
After acquiring all the knowledge, skills, and attitude and being aware of their

interests and personality types, Grade 12 learners will now choose the curriculum exit

they will pursue after senior high school. Grade 12 learners may choose to work

immediately since they are of legal age and have the competencies to perform a specific

job, or to pursue a business they can start to earn money. They may also proceed to

higher education and pursue a degree course or take up any Technical Education and

Skills Development Authority (TESDA) courses for middle – level skills development.

(Grade 12 Career Guidance, Module: 1 p. 4)

According to Krumboltz, 2008 that, choosing the right course is a big decision it is

important to get it right, as it can impact future success. Career awareness and self –

awareness go hand – in – hand. This is other idea behind why learners need to have

enough information profile about the career

1 they want to undertake through the

informational observation. In so doing, the learners could be taken away from the idea

that luck unpredictable social factor, chance, beliefs, and environmental factors play a

major in ones’ success in life.

Through, whatever career exits Senior High School graduates pursue is their own

decision. They need to have a maximize talent and resources in order to be success.

Review of Related Literature

Nowadays, the youth is build the nation of tomorrow. It is very essential for them

to realize that even at their young age, they could embrace their social responsibilities by

choosing their career after they graduate in senior high school. In order to delve deeper

on the study, a review of related literature is extensively done from the blogs and

researchers.

After Senior High School

Senior High School offers tracks geared towards a student’s interest. It have the

option to take classes specialized in academics, technical-vocational livelihood, sports,

arts, and design. With this, they will be equipped with skills that will prepare for the near

future whether it be in employment, entrepreneurship, tech-voc training or higher

education. One of the main objectives of Senior High School (SHS) is to prepare students

for employment. Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with different

companies is currently working on creating job opportunities and options for SHS

graduates. With the program, students will no longer need a college degree to gain

employment. The new curriculum also encourages students to become entrepreneurs

with the inclusion of classes geared towards running and managing businesses. The

entrepreneurship module offers classes that teach basic business management which

will allow to implement business ideas brewing in class or make profit from a passion.

Aside from these, SHS also better prepares students to pursue higher education as SHS

classes, especially those in the academic track, serve as an introduction to some college

courses. These classes not only help students in acquiring knowledge in their chosen

courses but also help them in making informed decisions on which course to choose

(Reyes, 2016).

Career Exits

The study of career references of the respondent. That provides a fundamental

background for the discussion and consideration is finding the present study. Sax (1994)

examined students’ initial interest in scientific career, factors influencing career choice

during college and these factors differ men and woman. Men who abandon career

aspiration appear to be driven by financial concern where women who decide not to
pursue scientific career appear more concerned with the social good of their career

choice. Ferry (2006) further assert that adolescent occupational choice is influenced by

many factors, including the context personal aptitudes and educational attainment.

He contends further that whether college-bound or work-bound, meeting the

challenge of this developmental milestone is critical adolescent lines. Student all over the

world usually faced the task of career decision making. The choice of career subject, and

courses of the study in schools and subsequent paths to follow is always difficult problem

facing prospective undergraduates. Often choosing the right subject combination leading

the right profession can make the difference between enjoying and detecting the career

in the future. Dedicating oneself to career choices that are unattainable leads to

frustration. Each individual undertaking the process is influenced by many factors,

including the context in which they live, their personal aptitudes, and educational

attainment, (Bandura, et al. 2001).

Higher Education – According to the website www.wg.aegee.org stated that, is

qualification at degree level takes as minimum of three years to complete, more typically

four. It will have a theoretical underpinning, it will be at a level which would qualify

someone to work in a professional field and it will usually be taught in an environment

which also includes advanced research activity. Shortly, Higher education mainly and
5
generally means university level education. It offers a number of qualifications ranging

from Higher National Diplomas and Foundation Degrees to Honours Degrees and as

further step, Postgraduate programmes such as Masters Degrees and Doctorates. These

are recognized throughout the world as representing specialist expertise supported by a

wide range of skills that employers find very useful. Further education is generally
including those post graduate studies in where you can gain your Master and Doctorate

degrees.

Employment – Is an agreement between an employer and an employee that the

employee will provide certain services on the job. The employment agreement ensures

that:

• The work will occur in the employer's designated workplace (which can a

telecommuter's home)

• The work is designed to accomplish the employer organization’s goals and mission

• In exchange for work performed, the employee receives compensation

An employment agreement for an individual employee can be verbal, written in an email,

or it can be a job offer letter. The offer of employment can be implied in an interview or

written in a formal, official employment contract. (Heathfield, 2018)

Entrepreneurship – involves an entrepreneur who takes action to make a change in

the world. Whether start – up entrepreneurs solve a problem that many struggle with each

day, bring people together in a way no one has before, or build something revolutionary

that advances society, they all have one thing in common: action (Ferreira, 2018). Senior

High School graduates who plan to pursue the entrepreneurship exit will have to consider

many things. They have to be cautious lest they end up losing money invested in the

business (Career Guidance Grade 12 Module 1, pp. 4).

Middle – Level Skills Development – Senior

6 High School learners who want to pursue

middle – level skills development after their finishing a specific track and strand in senior

high school may inquire at their local TESDA offices for the course offered in their locality.
Those who went to Technical Vocational Livelihood Track and earned a National

Certification Level II may apply for a higher level of national certification if they opt to

(Career Guidance Grade 12 Module 1, pp. 4)

Synthesis

All in all, SHS graduates are given opportunities for employment previous high

school graduates did not have. Upon graduation, you will be more equipped for

employment, entrepreneurship, a tech-voc career and higher education.

Senior High School graduates may go to any curriculum exit regardless of the

Senior High School track they took. If a learner took up a Technical Vocational Livelihood

Track, they can still enrol in college to pursue higher education. Moreover, after entering

a specific exit, any Senior High School graduate may proceed to another exit. For

example, a graduate who chooses to pursue higher education and gets employed after

graduation may enter into a business or pursue middle – level skills development while

employed.

Conceptual Framework 7
This Conceptual Framework followed the systems approach model whereas can

be seen in the conceptual paradigm by using categorical variable, and it is categorized

as nominal. The Categorical Variable of this study is the career exit which the students

prefer the four exits are: (a) Higher Education, where they proceed in college for

bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctor’s degree, (b) Entrepreneurship, starting a

small business to make a profit, (c) Employment by applying in the company since they

are in legal age and, (d) Middle – level skills development to pursue after senior high

school a specific track and strand in senior high school may inquire at their local TESDA.
