Michaelangelo Pignani/FFI

Raja Ampat Marine Field Coordinator,

Indonesia

“In the past century FFI has consistently saved species

from extinction and protected habitats from destruction.
Their solutions have always been practical, efficient and
sustainable in local circumstances.”

Sir David Attenborough,

FFI Vice-president
Fauna & Flora International
Fauna & Flora International (FFI) saves species from extinction and habitats from destruction, whilst
improving the livelihoods of local people. Our guiding principles are to work through local
partnerships, act as a catalyst for change, make conservation relevant and base decisions on sound
science. Founded in 1903, FFI is the world’s longest established international conservation body;
our conservation work, and impact, spans the globe.

Raja Ampat Marine Project

FFI’s marine work in Raja Ampat started in 2016 as part of FFI’s wider Ridge to Reef Program in the
Raja Ampat archipelago. Our marine work focusses primarily on community-based marine
conservation on the northern coast of Misool Island, seeking to conserve globally threatened marine
species including dugongs and sea turtles. This work is done in close collaboration with indigenous
communities, who we are supporting to gain legal recognition of their fishing rights and engage with
eco-tourism livelihood opportunities. The wider Ridge-to-Reef approach in the Raja Ampat
archipelago aims to reduce land-based impacts on marine ecosystems through community-based
forest conservation, collaborative protected area management, community-based sustainable
tourism development, and ‘green’ spatial planning interventions.

The Opportunity
FFI is now seeking Indonesian national candidates for the position of Marine Project Coordinator to
implement its marine conservation project in the Raja Ampat Archipelago, West Papua province.
Under the supervision of the Ridge-to-Reef Program Manager, and in close consultation with
government and NGO partners, the Marine Project Coordinator will train and lead a local marine
team to undertake biodiversity surveys, including seagrass, turtle nesting beaches and dugong
sightings. The role will also facilitate community and government consultations to establish and
recognize community fishing areas managed by indigenous communities based on customary law.
The candidate will have skills and experience in project implementation and financial management,
as well as strong technical skills to supervise and implement marine biodiversity surveys and
facilitate stakeholder consultations.
