Timings

9:30 AM TO 5:30 PM (Monday to Saturday).

First Impression

I was asked to reach the chamber which is in the old Lawyer’s Chamber of Nainital High Court by 9:30 AM and was greeted by his
clerk. Sir came and had few words with me. After 15 minutes, clerk asked me about my personal interest, and therefore, gave me a
criminal case to study. I met Sir, only in evening of the same day at his residence cum office where he asked me few questions about
my law subjects and my home town. He asked me about my future plans and my family background.

First day was quite bit terrific. Atmosphere of the office was disciplined and all the people were very warm and welcoming. As Sir
used to have a long cause list of cases every day, his junior associate distributes work according to one’s strength and thus everyone
remained busy for the whole day.

On the first day, I was made to read a bail application which I had completed before lunch and then Sir asked me to pen down my
observations about the case. I still remember the name of the case was P.S. Bhagwanpur (Applicant; in jail) vs. State of Uttarakhand
(Opposite party) which was decided by Nainital HC against us. Though I had pointed out that the grounds were not good enough in
the case, Sir, made me understand that merits of the case are the elements which have to be hit hard in an appeal.

Work assigned during the tenure

When it comes to Court work, we were given case files on daily basis to read and were asked to prepare briefs for the same. As per
my interest, I got maximum Criminal Cases. I had to research the procedure for investigation and the ingredients of the sections
applicable to the present case.
Then, On the same line, I was asked to draft Bail Application u/s 439 Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. There, sir pointed that
some basic elements were missing and had asked me to re-draft it properly.

All the interns were required to attend the court proceedings regularly and to note down the cases attended. The documents which
are required to be prepared before filing any case in High Court, about which I was not aware prior to this internship. It includes,
Notice of Motion, Certificate of original documents.

In the case of Shallini Negi versus State of Uttarakhand, a criminal case, I saw Sir arguing for the first time and also witnessed that
how a vaguely drafted petition may cost a party the entire case. We were representing the respondent No 2 in the case, where all the
three respondents got discharged from the offence of 498A IPC. Victim filed a revision under Section 397 read with 401 of Code of
Criminal Procedure and petition was partly dismissed only on the ground that specific dates and time of cruelty and other alleged
offences were not mentioned in the petition.

I was asked to write an article on any topic of my choice. I conveyed my choice that I want to write on the then going sexual
harassment case against Chief Justice of India, the idea which Sir didn’t appreciate any said that one should avoid writing on such
topics at this age because the language which would be used may amount to contempt of the court. I then decided to write an article
of Section 493 of Indian Penal Code, 1980 and Sir liked it very much.

As an intern I had to make case notes, search case laws, reading cases, assisting sir in court proceedings. I had to go with Sir and
follow him in the court’s every corner every minute. I had to watch the entire court proceedings.

Role and responsibilities assigned during the internship

I was the first intern to join in the month of May. There were 5 other interns working from April but their tenure ended up in the
first week of May. Therefore, Sir had asked me to perform the tasks with utmost care and made me accountable for the activities of
other interns who joined the internship later in the month. Sir had formed 5 groups of 6 interns each and I was made head of one of
the group. I was asked to take them from court to office on the decided date and to take them to court complex. I had to assign them
different tasks according to their potential. Since, all the persons in my group belong to Second year or first year, I didn’t face any
difficulty in managing the group.

Sir had also asked me to ensure the presence of our group in Nainital High Court for a corruption case. I still remember, my group
got scared as Sir didn’t come to the Court on time because of traffic and increase in tourism in Nainital. So, the case was called up.
There for the first time in Nainital, I spoke to judge about the extension and adjournment of the case for post lunch, which was duly
granted by the Judge. Sir gave me a reward for my confidence but was disappointed with the group.

Work environment and people

All the lawyers were very friendly and I learned a lot from them as well. Sir was very easily approachable and takes the doubts (if
any) of the juniors every evening. Ishita Mam used to talk to us every single moment she saw us free. He used to motivate us with
his stories or real life incidents.

Sir was very kind and humble and always asks his juniors about their health. He assures that every junior of his must take his lunch.
He always offer his interns tea and coffee whenever interns are required to stay for long.
Learning

I can say very happily that this internship has provided me so much knowledge. Sir has an experience of more than 15 years but the
best thing in the Sir was that he used to read each and every case file personally. It inspired me a lot. I learnt a little about procedure
followed in the court while having different task done. I am really satisfied with my internship under Sir. I learnt lessons, made
friends, understood about the law profession I’ve entered. He told us that one should always try to come first as no one remembers
the second.

I remember, in one of our cases, the counsel appearing of opposite party had forgot to bring the case file with her and the Judge
reprimanded the act of hers and asked her to bring the file within 10 minutes.

Sir used to appreciate the efforts of every intern by rewarding the intern in his own way for every right answer to the questions
posed. I also gave correct answers to many and was rewarded in monetary terms. This is one of the basic tactics of Sir to encourage
the interns to take initiative.

I learnt how to work in a team and how to stay without food for a long time as interns and other assistants assisting him may have
to stay for quite long for next day cases.

I learnt how to work in a team and be confident enough in expressing my opinions and asking doubts and arguing or sharing views
with seniors or with fellow one’s on different topics. Also, the discussions we used to have, were very eye-opening.

Overall Experience

They made me feel as home and often indulge in informal talks with me. Sir also at some occasions tested my legal knowledge. Sir
has a very high level of temperament but he never scolded me whenever I made some mistakes, that really encouraged me a lot.
Instead he used to talk to me very calmly and made me the things understand.

Sir used to treat every intern as family member. We used to have a proper farewell ceremony for every intern leaving the office.
Internship was aimed at improving the overall personality of every intern and the same was fulfilled. I realized that things have
changed for me now. I started looking for more opportunities and try to take initiatives. I will always remember the statement made
by sir that no one remembers second and that’s why one should always strive to become best of best.
