Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am a young architect and my passion in architecture is driven by the art and design that is
influenced by the cities and its society who live in it. I find that it is interesting when the
architecture is not only shaped by the building itself, but also the elements of social network,
organization, and human interactions.

My interest in architecture was exposed when I was in college. I involved in several non-academic
activities to enhance the adapting skills in the dynamic society with the diversity of people and
culture. However, as those non-academic activities were time-consuming, it gave unfavorable
effect to my academic’s grade. At that time, I had to manage my academic responsibilities as well.
To prove my strong desire in architecture, I worked hard to regain good grades academically. At
last, I got the highest score on my final studio project, namely “Contemporary Art Community
Development Facility”, which was awarded with “Excellent Design Award” in 2015. I also awarded
as an Outstanding Student when I graduated from Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung,
Indonesia, in 2016. To continue learning in the field that I am passionate about, I find that The
Bartlett (UCL) will be an ideal place for me as UCL is one of the most fascinating school in London
with a big community that enhances the world. Thus, UCL will enhance my skills as well as extent
my scope of architecture through the global environment.

After reviewing the educational programmes on UCL, I am really excited to apply on March: Urban
Design. As I know March: Urban Design propose a unique multi-scalar approach in the artistic ways
that respond to the burgeoning need for contemporary urban design. It is important to me to be
at institution that can give me opportunity to explore the edges of the disciplinary boundaries of
architecture and give me the ability to engage with technology, politics, culture, and communities.
I believe the future study in March: Urban Design will provide me with more comprehensive and
sophisticated ways of architectural design. That is what I am expecting to find out my graduate
study in UCL, especially on March: Urban Design.

For me, architecture, as a part that forms urban aesthetic, is always an expression of sensitivity to
the culture and society. Today, the culture and the society’s way of life develop so fast due to the
revolution of the digital industry. Thus, it is important to develop a new method with progressive
approach to solve innovative issues in creating an experimental space. As a future architect, I want
to participate in this progressive era to shape the best cultures in design and architecture for social
innovation through an artistic, technological, and analytical approach. I understand the
architecture as a collaborative and multidisciplinary art, which improves through thinking,
discussing, responding and practicing. This motivates me to keep learning so that I can spread my
methods and my ideas, talk, and discuss on the architecture all over the world.

In addition to the above, I always try to synthesize both doing analytical and artistic approach in
every single design process after experiencing several exciting projects during the period of
working. I have this capability to deal with various scales of architecture projects, from the material
scales and the territorial scales, such as urban design projects. Through these capabilities, I have
made several achievements through local and international competitions. One of the latest
achievements was the “Merit Award” from the recent FuturArc Prize in 2017. This experience
makes me able to develop a mature and more coherent approach. Based on experience and my
capabilities, I am delighted to say that I enjoy the process in architectural practice and I believe
the experience will allow me to take next steps in my further study with confidence and
enthusiasm.

My respect for the March: Urban Design in UCL is immerse, and I will be very delighted to be part
of it. I believe that being a student in UCL would not only empower my career development, but
also would give me the framework to utilize my full potentials in a meaningful way. I hope that I
will be given with an opportunity to not only study at your school, but also to become fully
absorbed in your planning community. Living in this gorgeous city and studying in one of the top
art and design school in the world will be a memorable experience of my life.

I appreciate the time taken to read this and I am looking forward for a satisfying result.

Sincerely,

Muhammad Tidar Albarkah
