1. DESCRIPTION

1.1 General description

The rotary valve is designed to transport powder from one chamber to another at a
reliable rate, and in addition limit the air flow.
WARNING
The rotary valve is approved by DMT as closing valve against dust explosion
(pressure resistance 10 bar) and flame penetration (ignition cut out) on the product
inlet side. Therefore the clearance, 0.2 mm or less, between the rotor and the housing
cannot and must not be adjusted (increased)!
The valve comprises the following components:
Item 200 Gear
300 House
400 Rotor
500 End cover
The gear (200) is a planetary gear with a ratio of 36.8 resulting in a rotor rpm of 25 at
50 Hz and 30 at 60 Hz. The power from the motor is transmitted to the gear via a
flexible coupling.
The motor should be a 6-pole foot mounted 0.37 kW, 920 rpm (50 Hz) or 1100 rpm
(60 Hz), motor.
The gearbox is equipped with a ½" BSP threaded hole for nitrogen purge of the
double seal between the valve house and the gearbox.
The conical house (300) is manufactured in stainless steel.
The tapered rotor (400) is a closed end type. The rotor is manufactured in stainless
steel.
The sidehinged end cover (500) can be opened for removal of the rotor and cleaning
of the interior.

2.6 Leakage rate as a function of pressure difference and particle size

The valve may feed a positive pressure system, in which case air leaks out against the
flow of powder or, when feeding a vacuum system, the leakage is into the system in
the same direction as the material feed. Leakage rates (kg/h) in proportion to pressure
difference (mm WG) across the rotary valve and particle size are shown in the
following graph:

3. INSTALLATION AND FIRST TIME START-UP

3.1 Installation and first time start-up

1. Machine the flexible coupling halfpart to fit the shaft of the motor in question.
2. 200: The rotary valve must be installed between a round upper flange with
sixteen M12 x 40 bolts, and a rectangular bottom flange with twenty
M12 x 45 bolts. - Full face gaskets are recommended.
347: The rotary valve must be installed between a round upper flange with
twentyfour M12 x 40 bolts, and a rectangular bottom flange with
twentyfour M12 x 45 bolts. - Full face gaskets are recommended.
3. Check that the oil level in the gearbox matches the mark on the inspection pane.
If not, refill with oil of the same type as indicated on the nameplate of the valve.
4. Remove the transportation plug and place the venting plug 200-26 on top of the
gearbox.
5. Open up the end cover 500 by loosening the eye nut 500-6.
6. Check that the rotor 400 is securely fastened by tightening the hand wheel 400-
2-4 clockwise.
7. Check that the line voltage is in accordance with the text on the name plate of
the motor.
8. Connect the terminal points of the motor.
9. Check that the direction of rotation for rotor 400 is in accordance with the arrow
on the house.
10. Close the end cover 500.
11. Earthing of valve to be done by enduser.

3.2 Danger

Always make sure that access to the inlet and outlet of the rotary valve is impossible
as the rotor of the running valve presents a danger in respect of fingers being cut off!!

An inspection opening positioned in the bottom of a cyclone, hopper or ductwork

close to the rotary valve must activate a microswitch which stops the rotary valve
motor when the inspection opening is opened.

In case the rotary valve discharges directly into an open hopper or bag, the product
outlet of the rotary valve must definitely be equipped with a min. 850 mm long piece
of ductwork with safety crossbars in the bottom outlet.

The warning sign: “Moving parts” shown below is placed on the valve house.

4. NORMAL OPERATION

4.1 Cleaning

The valve should be cleaned at the same intervals and with the same medium as the
rest of the plant.

Remove the rotor 400 from the house 300 and clean each component carefully.

4.1.1 Removal of the rotor

It is necessary to remove the rotor from the house for cleaning and inspection of the
interior. The rotor is removed as follows:

1. Loosen the eye nut 500-6 and open the end cover 500.

2. Turn the hand wheel 400-2-4 anti-clockwise to release the rotor from the shaft.

3. Remove the rotor cautiously from the shaft and the house.

8/14
5810-0016 ROTARY VALVE
3706 en TYPE 200/347-B/EX

4.1.2 Installation of the rotor

After cleaning of the valve or inspection of the rotor and the interior, the rotor is
mounted in the house as follows:

1. Check that the bushing inside the rotor 400 and the shaft are completely free of
dirt and powder.

2. Push the rotor cautiously so far onto the shaft that the thread at the end of the
hand wheel 400-2-4 catches the thread of the shaft.

3. Fasten the rotor by turning the hand wheel 400-2-4 clockwise.

4. Close the end cover 500.

4.2 Interruption of operation

In case the rotary valve is blocked by powder or a foreign body the motor is switched
off at once. Open the end cover and pull out the rotor as described in section 4.1.1.

The blockage can now be removed partly through the cleaning opening of the cyclone
and partly through the end cover 500 of the valve.

5.2 Oil change and cleaning of gear

The gearbox is from the factory filled up with approx. 1 liter of lubrication oil -
type SHELL Cassida Fluids GL (Food grade) 320.
Once a year or for every 6000 hours of operation the oil should be changed and the
gear should be cleaned.
1. Remove drain plug 200-35 and let the oil pour out.
2. The cover 200-22 is dismantled as described in section 5.3: Disassembly and
assembly of gear.
3. The components are washed by means of a suitable solvent.
4. The ball bearings 200-3 and 200-8 are lubricated once and for all and do not
require lubrication. It is recommended to exchange bearings during overhaul.
5. All O-rings and gaskets to be replaced during overhaul.
6. Inspect coupling for wear and replace if necessary.
7. Reinstall the gearbox, see section 5.3.
8. The venting plug 200-26 is removed, drain plug installed and new oil is poured
through the hole.
The following lubricants are recommended:
ESSO Spartan EP 320
MOBIL Mobilgear 632
BP GR-XP 320
CASTROL Non leaded gear compound 320
SHELL Cassida Fluids GL (Food grade) 320
9. Pour approx. 1 l of oil to the mark on the inspection pane 200-38 (not shown on
the drawing below).
10. The venting plug is carefully cleaned before being fitted again.
11. Refill grease at the lubrication nipple 200-46 (not shown). Remember to
remove the cap of the grease cup 200-47 (not shown). Fill the cap with grease

circlips 200-30 and 200-29.
15. Press-out the coupling shaft 200-27.
16. Loosen the screws in coupling 200-33 and press-out the coupling.
17. Press-out the bearings 200-28.

Assembly
Assembly takes place in reverse order. Note that the Allen screws 200-23-1 in the
Taperlock bushing 200-23 have to be tightened with a torque of 2 kgm or 14.5 lb ft.
