Welcome
Welcome to The Big Picture Digital Book Help section. We hope that you will enjoy using the
Digital Book with your class. This document explains how the main tools and features of
the Digital Book work. If you are experiencing any problems or have any further questions,
please email us at info@richmondelt.com.

You will see three icons in the top right-hand corner of the screen:

Saves the data you have added to the Digital Book, so that it will appear next time you run
the program.

Temporarily turns the screen black to hide the book from students’ view. Click on any part
of the screen to return to the Digital Book.

Exits the program.

The following icons appear along the sides of each page:

This is the Audio icon. Click on this icon to launch the audio player for listening activities.

This is the Answer Key icon. Click on this icon to reveal the answers to the exercises
in a pop-up box.

This is the Page Reference icon. Click on this icon to go to the page number that is

At the top of each page you will see the following tabs:

Clicking on this will take you to the corresponding unit of the Workbook.

Clicking on this will take you to the corresponding page of the Teacher’s Book.

Page menu
The Page toolbar enables you to scroll through thumbnails of every page in
the Digital Book and click on the page you want to view. Move down the bar
by using the scrollbar on the right hand side. This toolbar can be minimised by
clicking on the minimise button in the top right corner.

View menu

This toolbar allows you to move between pages and change the way you view
the page.

The page box displays the page number you are currently viewing.
Pressing the Next button will take you to the next page in the book,
whilst Back will take you to the previous page. If you know the page
number you wish to view you can simply input it here, press enter,
and be taken directly to that page.

Clicking this icon enables you to switch between viewing the book as a double
page spread or as a single page.

The Move tool works in conjunction with the Drag zoom tool (see below). Once
you have zoomed in on an area using Drag zoom, this tool allows you to move
the page around to focus on different areas.

The Drag zoom tool allows you to zoom in on any area of the page. Click on
this button, then hold left-click and drag the mouse over the area of interest to
create a box around it, and finally release the mouse button to zoom in.

When you have finished working with the zoomed in view of the page, click on
this button to restore the page to its normal size.

Tools menu
These tools enable you to annotate, draw, highlight and make notes on the
page(s) that you are currently viewing.

Any drawing, Sticky notes and other editing done to a page will remain on that
page until you erase them using the Eraser tool or click the Delete all drawing
button. If you select a new page to view, the changes will remain on the previous
page(s) that you edited.

When you exit the program, your changes will be saved on the computer you are
using, so that you can access them next time you use the book.

The Draw tool can be used to annotate, underline, circle text or draw attention
to important points on the page. You can select the thickness of the line by
clicking on the coloured line next to the pen symbol to activate the drop down
menu. You can change the colour by clicking on the coloured circle to the right
of the Draw tool, and then clicking on the colour you wish to use.

The Highlight tool has the same functionality as the Draw tool but the line
produced is more transparent, so that you can highlight words or pictures
without totally obscuring them. You can change the colour of the highlighter by
clicking on the coloured circle to the right of it, and then clicking on the colour
you wish to use.

The Eraser tool is used to delete any drawings or annotations you have made
using the Draw or Highlight tools.
Note: The Eraser tool is specifically designed to be used in conjunction with the
Draw and Highlight tools. It won’t therefore delete the text written in a Sticky
note and won’t delete the Sticky note itself. See Sticky note text box for details
on how to delete a Sticky note.

The Hide all drawing tool enables you to temporarily hide all additions you
have made using the Draw and Highlight tools. Once you have clicked on the
button, it will become a Show all drawing button. When you click on the button
again, your additions will be restored to the page.

The Delete all drawing button permanently deletes all additions you have made
using the Draw, Highlight or Sticky note tools.

The Add link tool allows you to add links and resources of your own. You
can link to Microsoft Word and other documents, Microsoft PowerPoint
presentations and pictures, photos and videos which you have stored on your
computer, or you can link directly to a website.

Click Add link and then click the place on the page where you would like the link
to appear. The box shown on the left will pop up. To add a link to a file on your
computer, click ‘Browse’ to locate the file on your computer. To link to a website,
type in the full address of any webpage you wish to link to and click ‘OK’. Links
you have added will appear on the page in your selected location. Click on the
link icon to open the document or webpage.

would like to delete.

The More tools tab extends the Tools menu to show more tools, which are
detailed below.

The Sticky note tool creates a text box which can be placed anywhere on the
page. See Sticky note text box for more information.

Clicking the Notepad button brings up a notepad where you can jot down your
own annotations and reminders. See Notepad for more information.

Clicking this button will bring up the Calculator, which can be used for adding
up scores for tests, quizzes and any other games or activities undertaken in
class.

Clicking this button brings up a Stopwatch. See Stopwatch for more

information.

The Text tool creates a text box which can be placed anywhere on the page. It
is very similar to the Sticky note tool, except that the background is transparent
so you can use it to annotate the pages. It shares the same buttons as the Sticky
note tool. See Sticky note text box for more information.

The Spotlight tool allows you to show one area of the page at a time to your
students. When you click the tool, the background colour will change. Move the
mouse over the page to focus on different areas.

The Record tool allows you to make voice recordings using a microphone and
insert the recording into the desired place to be played back later. See Record for
more information on how to use this tool.

Text hide tool. This is a white pen which you can use to cover any text on the
page, to create your own gap fill exercises.

Text reveal tool. This tool removes the white pen marks of Text hide. It will not
affect any of your other annotations on the page.

Tools menu extended

Sticky note text box / Text tool

The Sticky note and Text tools are found in the Tools menu. After you have
selected the Sticky note tool and placed it on a page you can move it around,
change the size and colour of the text, and delete the Sticky note.

The Sticky note tool and the Text tool are identical, except that the Sticky note
background is yellow, and the Text box background is transparent.
Click this icon to delete the current Sticky note from the page or Notepad.
Click this button and drag to move the Sticky note.
Use these two buttons to make the text larger and smaller within the
text box.
Click on this button to change the colour of the text in the text box.

Notepad

The Notepad window is accessed from the Tools menu. You can use any of
the drawing tools and sticky notes on the notepad. Thumbnail previews of
each notepad page will appear in the column on the right side of the notepad
window. To add a new notepad page, roll over the bottom right corner of the
thumbnail and a blue ‘+’ will appear. Click on the ‘+’ and a new notepad page
will be created. To close the notepad, click on the ‘X’ in the top right-hand corner.

Stopwatch

The Stopwatch is accessed via the Tools menu. It can count up from 0.00 or
start at a set time and count down. Press the start button to start timing from
0.00. To start a countdown, left-click on each 0 to set the desired time on the
timer and press start. After timing begins, the start button becomes a stop
button – clicking on this will stop the timer. The reset button restores the timer
to 0.00.

Record

You must have a microphone connected to your computer to be able to use the
Record tool. To make a voice recording, click on Record in the Tools menu. A link
symbol will appear attached to the mouse cursor. Move the mouse to the place
where you would like the recording to appear on the page, and click once using
the left mouse button. The audio record box shown on the left will appear.

Click the red ‘record’ button to start recording, and speak clearly into your
microphone. Press the red button again to stop recording. A link symbol will
appear on the page. You can press the play button in the audio record box to
listen to your recording. Next time you come back to the page you can access
the recording by clicking on the link that you have created. To delete a recording,
follow the steps for Delete link above.

At present, the Record tool will only function on a PC; it is not possible to use
this tool when working on a Mac or other platforms.
