iv) In high school Michael had a job selling news paper subscriptions.

Michael Dell has always been found of saying, “If you think you have a good idea, try
it!” And today, at 29 , he has discovered the power of another good idea that has helped him
rise in just a few years from teen to tycoon.. He has become the fourth- largest manufacturer of
personal computers in America and the youngest man ever to head Fortune 500 corporation.

Growing up in Huston, Texas, Michael and his two brothers were imbued by their
parents, Alexander and Lorraine – he an orthodontist, she a stockbroker – with the desire to
learn and the drive to work hard. Even so, stories about the middle boy began to be told early.

Like the time a saleswoman came asking to speak to “Mr. Michael Dell” about his
getting a high-school equivalency diploma. Moments late, eight year – old Michael was
explaining that he thought it might be a good idea to get high school out of the way.

A few years later Michael had another good idea, to trade stamps by advertising in
stamp magazines. With the $2000 he made, he bought his first personal computer. Then he
took it apart to figure out how it worked.

In high school Michael had a job selling newspaper subscriptions. Newlyweds, he

figured, were the best prospects, so he hired friends to copy the names and addresses of recent
recipients of marriage licenses. These he entered into his computer, then sent a personalized
letter offering each couple a free two- week subscription.

This time Dell made $18,000 and bought and expensive BMW car. The car salesman
was flabbergasted when the 17 Year – old paid cash.

Stopping grazing The Process for

Adarshgaon

Planting Trees

“The Story of Hiware Bazaar that began in 1989 will repeat itself in these 38 villages in the
years to come.

But being named an ‘AdarshGaon’ is far from easy. Villages had to give a proposal after which
a committee headed by Mr. Pawar inspected the villages. “The villages had to show dedication in the
struggle to fight mediocrity. They had to follow all the conditions of becoming an ‘Adarshgaon.’ We
chose villages with a revolutionary spark,” Mr. Pawar says.

Villages need to follow strict rules. The process begins with effective water management
through the watershed technique and water auditing, taking responsibility of the village’s natural
resources - planting trees and stopping grazing, contributing labour for the village work, and then
expanding to bring about behavioural changes in the people for harbouring social change. Hiware
Bazaar is free of any kind of addiction and there are no liquor or tobacco shops in the village.
Vasectomy has been made compulsory, as is the pre-marital HIV test.

The ‘AdarshGaon’ model prides itself of being on the joint decisions made by the Gram Sabha,
where all the villagers are present. Even while selecting the new villages under the scheme, Mr.
Pawar made sure that the decision to become an ideal village was taken by the entire village
together.

The greatest victory for Hiware Bazaar so far has been the reverse migration that the village
has witnessed since 1989. As many as 93 families have come back to the village, “ from the slums in
Mumbai and Pune” Mr.Pawar says. The village of 216 families was completely below poverty line

[B] Note - Making Formation of Galaxies about Theories 3

Read the following extract carefully and complete the note on

Astronomers know that all the galaxies in the Universe are moving apart at high speed. Three
theories have been put forward to explain this.

In 1927 a Belgian astronomer called Georges proposed the Big Bang Theory. He suggested that the
Universe began as a vast explosion from a central mass of matter. The resulted debris formed the galaxies,
which are still moving outwards.

A variation of this theory states that the Universe is constantly exploding outwards, drawing back
together into a mass and exploding again. This continuous cycle is called the Oscillating Universe Theory.

In 1948 Fred Hoyle and two other British astronomers proposed a completely different theory called
the Steady State Theory. According to this, the appearance of the Universe remains the same all the time.
As the galaxies move apart, new matter is being created to occupy the empty space.

Plague

The garbage dumps spread

infections diseases like….

Skin ailments

It is obvious from the visible garbage around us that solid wastes are not being managed properly.
However, housing colonies are the most disorganized sector as far as garbage is concerned. As a result the
legal garbage dumps are overflowing and the number of illegal garbage dumps is on the increase in most
colonies of Delhi, and for that matter in all Indian cities.

At present five percent of Delhi’s land mass is being choked by the garbage. This five percent has
become a wasteland, its utility is steadily declining and soil quality is deteriorating. Besides being eyesores,
these garbage dumps pose health and environment hazard for the ten million people who live in Delhi. They
are the breeding grounds for the germs of infectious diseases like plague, tuberculosis, dysentery, diarrhea,
eye infections and numerous skin ailments.

Scientific management of garbage thus is one of the most important services that needs to be
regularized in all residential colonies. After exploring all viable solutions to this problem, I have successfully
launched an indigenous scheme - Cleaning Brigades – in many colonies of Delhi. The Cleaning Brigades are
managing solid wastes for at least 25 thousand Delights. A year and a half back the first cleaning brigade was
launched during the Asiad. Since then it has been constantly expanding.

If you do not get lowered in your won eyes If you accept counsel without getting sore
While you raise yourself in those of others And re-assess yourself in the light thereof
If you do not give in to gossips and lies If you pledge not to be obstinate any more
Rather heed them not, saying, ‘Who bothers?’ And meet others without any frown or scoff.

If you crave not for praise when you win If you have the will to live and courage to die

OW listen ! In the country, close by the high road, stood a farmhouse; perhaps you have passed by and seen it
yourself. There was little flower garden with painted wooden palings in front of it; close by was a ditch, on its fresh
green bank grew a little daisy; the sun shown as warmly and brightly upon it as on the magnificent garden flowers,
and there fore it thrived well. One morning it had quite opened, and its little snow- white petals stood round the
yellow centre, like the rays of the sun. It did not mind that nobody saw it in the grass, and that it was a poor despised
flower; on the contrary, it was quite happy, and turned towards the sun, looking upward and listening to the song of
the lark high up in the air.

The little daisy was as happy as if the day had been a great holiday, but it was only Monday. All the children
were at school, and while they were sitting on the forms and learning their lessons, it sat on its thin green stalk and
learnt from the sun and from its surroundings how kind God is, and it rejoiced that the song of the little lark expressed
so sweetly and distinctly its won feelings,. With a sort of reverence the daisy looked up to the bird that could fly and
sing, but it did not feel envious. “I can see and hear,” it thought; “ the sun shines upon me, and the forest kisses me.
How rich I am!”

We are living in a fast moving World where social life is connected with mobile phones. According to
my opinion-Mobiles are the No. 1 culprit in damaging our social life and family life. People have started Texting
instead of talking and visiting. What more, I have seen people talking through phone to the family members in
the next room instead of just getting up from the chair and walking over there. Now an excessive use of mobile
phones create health problems.

Agreed mobile keeps you connected but think about the privacy you are losing. It spoils your fun time.
