Rural Poultry Production

Rural poultry production constitutes important component of agricultural economy in India,

small poultry holder is practically capable of more significant contribution to alleviate

malnutrition, poverty and unemployment. A spectacular progress has been made from

subsistence to sustainable production system. Indian backyard population increase is only by

16% in the last 30 years from 60-70 million. China's 76% of total egg comes from rural

backyard production. India requires both mass production as well as production by masses.

Farming in India

Poultry farming in India has changed dramatically over the past two decades. With independent poultry
farming concepts, the sector has moved into a well-organized network of integrated farming also known as
contract farming. Pioneered by Suguna poultry way back in 1984, Indian poultry farmers today find great
relief and satisfaction in this model.

The integrated / Contract farming model is gaining significant amount of popularity and

acceptance among poultry farmers. This model protects and retains the interests of both the

farmer and the integrator. The popularity of this model is influenced by the fact that the

integrator takes most of the risks as opposed to an independent farmer. The integrator takes full
responsibility of providing day old chicks, feed, medicines and supervision to the farmers. In addition, the
integrator brings Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and technical know-how which leads to higher
productivity. Absence of these benefits have resulted in heavy investments, multiple source of interaction,
and overall poor yield to the independent former. Last but not the least, farmers are assured of considerable
earnings in the integrated/ contract farming model. This Introduction to Poultry industry

It is believed that the Indian poultry industry is 5000-year-old; since last 4 decades it began to witness
remarkable growth from backyard of houses to being an industry. The organized sector of poultry industry is
contributing nearly 70% of total output and the rest 30% unorganized sector. The broiler industry is well
dominated in southern states in our country with nearly 60-70% total output coming from these states. The
layer industry once again is represented more in southern states especially Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
Maharashtra, producing nearly 70% of the countries egg production. India's 75% of egg produce is consumed
by the 25% population living in urban and semi-urban areas. Recently about 800 hatcheries are operating in
the country.

What changes are seen over this period?

Over the last two decades, the poultry industry has seen many changes. From backyard poultry in the early
seventies, it has adopted modern farming techniques. Now, broiler growers have capacities in hundred
thousand, some are even in millions. Broiler breeder farms have stocks in thousands, some are having many
hundred thousand.
Broiler parent, grandparent stocks are produced and maintained in the country. Some breeders have pure
line breeds also. On the feed front, the main ingredients soy and corn, are grown in sufficient quantities in
India.

Many multinational companies have their manufacturing facilities in India. They supply most of the feed
supplements required for profitable broiler production. Only a few supplements such as methionine and
lysine are imported. Poultry equipment required for modern poultry production is manufactured in India,
with only the very critical parts imported. Most of the vaccines and medicines are manufactured in the
country. In a nut-shell, India has all the resources to meet the requirement of modern poultry production - it
can be compared with the developed poultry industries, world over.

Commercial Poultry

India has emerged as the only country in the developing world a self- reliant, technology-driven industry,
with capability to produce every essential input for successful poultry farming including indigenous genetic
resource and breeding, world class poultry vaccines and medicines, specific pathogen free eggs (SPF), farms
and hatchery automation systems, pelleted feed, egg processing, poultry processing, nationwide network of
disease diagnostic laboratories and facilities for entrepreneurial development and training in both private
and public sector.

Since when, has India been self-sufficient in poultry meat?

India has a variety of livestock production. All species, including buffalo, sheep, goats and

poultry are produced and consumed in India. Indians, being mostly vegetarians, eat less meat

compared to in many countries, where meat is the basic protein source. Whatever is produced in the
country, is consumed locally. Very small quantities are exported to Middle Eastern countries. India has now,
however, set up modern abattoirs and is the number one exporter of buffalo meat. The Indian poultry
industry has adopted modern techniques of production and has achieved the distinction of producing low
cost broiler meat compared to other meats. Thus, production of broiler meat, and its consumption in the
country, has expanded very quickly. Broiler meat Consumption has grown at 10% per annum over the last 15
years. India is now the fifth largest broiler producer in the world, with production of 2.3 million tones

OI broiler meat per annum. With the Indian economy growing at 7-8% per annum, for the last

Two decades’ consumption of poultry meat (and other meats) has grown faster than its production. Thus
price of meats and mea product have increased in India, and the poultry industry can hardly meet this
growing consumption, so there are only very small quantities available for export. is the project thank you all
