Case Study Questions

1. Company X is facing lot of problem these days. It manufactures white goods like washing
machines, microwave, ovens, refrigerators and air conditioners. The company’s margins are
under pressure and the profits and market share are declining. The production department
blames marketing for not meeting sales targets and marketing department blames production
department for producing goods, which are not of good quality meeting customer
expectations. The finance department blames both production and marketing for declining
return on investment and bad marketing.
a) What quality of management do you think the company is lacking?
b) What steps should the company management take to bring the company back on track?
2. Mr. Amir, Mr. Sunder and Mr. Harish are the production managers of three different firms,
they follow different strategies to manage production. Mr. Amir, in order to complete target
production, operates on double shifts due to power fauilure most of the time. He is able to
achieve target but at higher cost. Mr. Sunder’s main consideration is cost cutting. So he
concentrates more on producing goods with fewer resources. He is unable to achieve the
target production. Mr. Harish believes in maintaining balance between effectiveness and
efficiency. So he uses minimum resources to achieve target production. He is also able to
produce goods at lower cost.
a) Who is only effective, only efficient, and who possess both the qualities? Why?

3. Raman agreed to be an employee of a company on the condition that he will be given a
project offering competitive salary, career advancement opportunity, promotion and
recognition. Mr. John, (General Manager) puts Raman in a project in which promotion is not
possible. Raman gets disheartened and feels frustrated all the time. Such frustration also
reflected in his work and he could not bring desired results.

c) What should Mr. John do to avoid such problem?
4. XYZ Ltd. has the following personnel in its management team:
Mr. Ram and Mr. Rahim are responsible for ultimate success or failure of the organization.
Their job is stressful and complex. They develop long-term objectives, frame policies, make
key appointments and review the work of heads working at different levels.
Mr. Joy, Mr. Singh, and Ms. Poonam who form a link between two levels of management.
They formulate short-term departmental objectives in accordance with organizational
objectives. They are responsible for implementation of plans and policies developed by Mr.
Mr. ram and Mr. Rahim. They communicate orders/ decisions downwards and carry
suggestions/ problems upwards.
Mr. Mohan, Mr. Sohan, Mr. Harish, Mr. Suresh, Ms. Sonia and Mr. James are in direct
contact with workforce consisting of various employees and workers. They enjoy limited
authority and responsibility and maintain discipline in the company. They pass on the
instructions of Mr. Joy, Mr. Singh and Ms. Poonam to various employees/workers and convey
latter’s suggestion and complaint to the former.

5. Daksh Ltd. has the following organization structure. On the top level is the managing director
of the company Mr. Naresh. He has four departments to manage – Purchase, Production,
Sales and Human Resource. Mr. Naresh decided that all departments ought to prepare their
own plans set objectives. As a result, no department was aware of plans of other
departments. The purchase department made over-purchases and production department
over-produced the goods which was not accepted by sales department and hence some
goods remained unsold. Sales department itself could not work properly as Human Resource
Department could not supply right number of employees to them. As a result, there was utter
chaos and the organization could not function properly.

6. Sonu Nigam the famous playback singer always spends time for practice and adds his
creativity in his singing.
Like Sonu Nigam, Mr. Rajiv, manager of Headlines Ltd.uses his creativity and practice
management principles under different situations to manage the business. The employees
are happy and satisfied as he reward employees everyday for their punctuality and efficiency.

and disheartened all the time.
