HIS time last year the
market was relatively
buoyant. It had bounced
back strongly from two
or three particularly
trying years.
But now we can see this for what
it was. The activity was mainly
through buyers with no need for a
mortgage and able to cash in on
pent-up demand to sell.
Now we enter a new phase after
the Government’s unveiling of a
radical set of measures to curb
public spending. Already the
squeeze can be felt and nowhere
more so than in the property
market.
Besides the cutbacks other dark
forces are now also at work.
Lenders are still making it hard to
borrow money – despite their
protestations to the contrary.
Added to which some sellers,

encouraged by last year’s price
surge, have been reluctant to
accept the new reality. Overpriced
property is lingering on the
market – ignored by those with as
much sense as money.
But the mist will evaporate to
reveal a glorious season of rich
colour and crystal clarity. For the
property industry it is clear that
this could be a fruitful time for
those who take care to understand
what is happening.
To get the correct results there is
important work to be done for
both sellers and buyers. For
sellers price is the key. They
should listen to experienced estate
agents and not make their home
the most expensive in their road,
street or lane. They should make it
the most competitive and offer the
best value for money. Buyers like
value for money. Nor should they
be seduced by naive, incompetent
or untruthful agents who flatter to
deceive with inflated valuations.
They should listen to their heads
not their wallets.
Buyers should get their finances
in order – for those with enough
deposit there are some good deals
about – but they should not have
eyes bigger than their pockets.
There will be good choice in the
market so for those with cash or a
mortgage this should be an
excellent time to buy. But it is still
wise to remember that a smaller
house in a popular location can
often be a better investment than a
bigger house in a less popular one.
It may also be timely to
remember the person who often
will have as much, if not more,
influence on the selling price of a
property than anyone – a bank or
building society valuer. Right now
they are in the driving seat for
those who need a mortgage or
those selling to someone who
needs some finance.

damaged Oriental jars
An impressive pair of 18th century imari jars entranced two bidders at Brightwells

WO very determined bidders
chased a pair of large 18th
century imari jars with covers
to £5,700 at Brightwells
recent antiques and fine art
saleheld at Easters Court, Leominster.
Impressive pieces of this type were
difficult to fire successfully so that
relatively few were made. Their
scarcity appeal was greatly increased PRETTY: The Georgian tortoiseshell box which sold for £420.

and intact.
On the down side they were both
cracked in many places and the original
decorative handles were missing. The
eventual buyer obviously anticipated a
good return on the investment even
after expensive restoration.
Other Oriental ceramics included a
Chinese baluster vase with unusual
moulded figures at £380 and a large blue
and white vase at £230. A blue and
white Japanese plate made £120.
Worcester ceramics were led by a
Barr Flight & Barr plate with a shell
and seaweed painted centre panel at
£460 and another example made the
same price. An elegant urn shaped pot
pourri with a painted decoration sold
for £190; a comport painted with South
African flowers made £160 and another,
slightly smaller one, reached £100. A
Flight Barr & Barr shell painted plate
within gilded dendritic branches made
£380.
The earliest piece of jewellery was a
white metal oval locket, probably silver,
with the inscription “Quis tempery a
Lacluimis Fanit 1648” that sold for £950.
Among much later pieces a diamond
band ring, channel set, made £600; a
diamond line 18ct bracelet its brilliant
cut stones with flexible square linking
sold for £700; an emerald and diamond
necklace with a claw set carved
emerald, £600 with an opal and a
sapphire pendant, £300.
An Arts and Crafts silver opal matrix
and seed pearl pendant suspended from
a gold chain achieved £250.
ORIENTAL RARITIES: The two damaged imari jars that caused a bidding war.

disc decorated with lions, £260 and a
jade plaque, £290. A pair of cut glass
scent bottles in a domed walnut box
with gilt metal mounts sold for £160,
while an ivory stick handle in the form
of an American Civil War soldier

A silver and tortoiseshell heart
shaped trinket box, London, 1908, was
bought for £230 and a snuff box made
by George Unite, Birmingham, 1875,
sold for £210. A pin cushion in the form
of a bull dog, made by Adey & Lovekin
in Birmingham, 1905, reached £180; a
pair of table pheasants bearing import
marks, £420; an impressive and
complete dressing case in burr walnut
and with an unusually wide variety of
fittings, £1,020 and an Arts and Crafts
three-handled goblet made in London in
1904, £230.

Train nameplate steams out of sale

IT was full steam ahead for Halls when
a rare locomotive engine nameplate
sold for £16,000.
The Torquay Manor nameplate was
bought by a telephone bidder from the
south of England. It had come from a
collector in the Machynlleth area of
mid-Wales, where the locomotives
operated until the mid-1960s.
Built in 1938, the 7800 Torquay
Manor was the first of the Manor Class
locomotives and was originally due to
be called Ashley Manor. Its first depot
allocation was Wolverhampton
followed by Tyseley, Oswestry and
Shrewsbury. It was withdrawn from

were the smallest class of Great
Western locomotives with the 4-6-0
wheel arrangement, both in size and
