IOT: TECHNOLOGICAL EFFICACY IN MSME START-UPS OF SIVAGANGA DISTRICT

ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things backbone of Smart Manufacturing is the network of devices connected
together to communicate and process with one another. MSME Start-Ups with the help of IOT
will become smart manufacturing units able to reduce the cost and time of production. IOT with
the help of 5G networks once implemented will reduce the latency thereby speeding up the
communication between two devices, hence improving the accuracy in decision making process.
Manufacturing Start-Ups in Sivaganga district has to adapt to the technological change to
compete with other MSME Start-Ups located in more developed areas.

Keywords: IOT, 5G, Latency, MSME, Start-Ups

INTRODUCTION

In the age of Gen Y and the country shifting towards Digital Transactions the Manufacturing
units must shift towards digital platform to survive. With Green manufacturing becomes need of
the hour shifting towards Digital platform and adopting technology is the smart way. To achieve
this Green goal IOT and 5G technology plays a major role, IOT in particular with the help of the
5G networks will efficiently reduce the work time of the machines and will detect the faulty
machines at correct time thereby increasing the efficiency of the plant. The manufacturing Start-
Ups located in rural places have to adopt to technological changes in order to cope up with the
companies located in developed cities. The main challenge faced by these companies will be the
technological exposure when compared with their counterpart in cities and the availability of
technical expertise. Even though the technical persons are available in their zone they will prefer
to work in cities due to higher wages. Hiring and retaining of technical expertise will be a major
hurdle for these companies, another major challenge for these companies will be investment in
technology for example implementing IOT in a manufacturing plant requires initial investment in
both materials and expertise, the companies from rural background has to bear with this financial
burden. Once implemented and adopted to these changes the companies can compete with other
companies located in developed cities.
MANUFACTURING CHALLENGES OF INTRODUCING IOT

The introduction of IOT in manufacturing Start-Ups is not a question of if but when and the
introduction must be done carefully considering the association of manufacturers and
information technology expertise. The key areas of conflict when changing towards smart
manufacturing are discussed below,

 The main challenge in introduction of IOT for manufacturing Start-Ups will be re-
training to the technical talent available and the recruitment of new talent pool regarding
to knowledge in IOT field.
 The data collected from the IOT devices has to be processed, the main challenge will be
when and from where the data is to be collected and processed for production purpose.
 The collected data has to be processed to get the desired outcome and the main challenge
lies in whether enough information is gathered from the data collected.
 The knowledge of the employees in analyzing the collected data is another major
challenge.
 Connectivity with remote systems and safety of the IOT environment are other challenges
which has to be addressed during the introduction of IOT in manufacturing Start-Ups.
 Development of new software for IOT environment and the financial limitations in
spending more for the purpose of IOT implementation are to be addressed.

5G ENABLED IOT

The 5G network which is in a trial phase in most part of the world will become operational after
2020 and the devices which run on 5G enabled devices will have a very low latency there by
increasing the communication and process time, the 5G network will process any query between
the devices at an enormous speed so that the processing will be done at the remote server and the
data requested will be provided to the corresponding node quickly thereby increasing the battery
backup of the devices connected.
