Goal Setting is Stressful and Pointless without

Habits as a System.

Everyone talks about setting goals as a way of progress and achieving success. I say that it
really is pointless doing that unless you focus on the systems, processes and Habits in order to
achieve your Goals.

We all have challenges that we want to achieve in our lives – from losing weight, career
progress, having a fantastic social life, building your own business, multiplying your income,
winning a competition, being a best-selling author, travelling the world, speaking on stage with
1,000+ audience often, helping in charities, owning a house on the lake or golf course, and so
on. Having achieved all these personally and with numerous failures in my wisdom growth, I can
quiet simply say that whilst Goal setting via SMARTER Goals TM being my own system for over
20+ years, is important, I realised that they are too binary and very depressing as its hit and
miss. Hence I developed a system that gives you a process that allows you to success in a
Minimum, Obtainable and Transformational way (MOT) TM.

Over the years I then realised what it really was that made the difference, was the use of
systems and habits that actually made the results NOT the Goals that were set. If you actually
want to getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a
much better way to do things.

It all comes down to the difference between goal setting and the Habits and systems required to
hit the Goals.
Here is an example of what I mean.

The Difference between Goals, Habits and Systems

What's the difference between goals and systems?

 If you're an Employee, your Goal is to become the

General Manager within 3 years. Your Habits are
what you do on a daily basis like clockwork that
challenges status Quo and adds value to the business
whilst focused on clients and profits. You have a
relentless habit to be fearless and willing to stretch
out of the comfort zone with deliverable results on a
regular basis. Your System is what you and your
team do to deliver the right results in terms of the
actions required to deliver the results.

 If you're an entrepreneur, your Goal is to build a

million euro business within 2 years. Your Habits are
what you do daily in terms of vision, mission,
operations, brand building, business planning, selling,
marketing and so on. Your System is your sales and
marketing process.

 If you are an Athlete, your Goal is to win a

championship. Your Habits are what time you wake
up, eat, sleep, diet, practise, get coaching, mentoring,
mind-set training, and so on. Your System is what
you do to practice daily to develop your skills in a
formal training program.

 If you're a writer, your Goal is to write a best-selling book. Your habits are daily
research, content organisation, meeting like-minded people, coaching and mentoring
from those who have been there, daily routine that’s interruption free to write, creating
and maintaining the right environment to write and so on. Your system is the writing
schedule that you follow each week.

So here is the million Euro test.

If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your habits and system, would you still
get results?

Let’s take the examples mentioned above.

Entrepreneur: What if you focused on waking up daily at 6am, did some exercises, planned your
day, reviewed you plans and actions, started taking actions on the what’s and how’s of your
business, met and spoke to at least 1 client, reviewed your sales and marketing actions and so
on as a habit daily. So, if you followed through this as a system relentlessly on a daily basis as a
habit at least 66 days (proven that’s when it becomes a Habit by the studies from University
College of London), do you think you would hit your Goals and your results will be delivered?

Another Example, Last year I said to myself I wanted to do lots of Quotes and pictures of my
own and write more. I didn’t set any goals here but just did 1-2 Quotes per day and posted those
on social media. A year later I have more than 400 done so far. If I had set a goal of 400, would I
have achieved it? The same goes for writing a book. I wrote about 2 pages of articles in full or
draft per day on average. I now have 2 new books but had I set a goal of doing 2 books and
400+ quotes, would I have achieved it or got better results?

Let me now explain why I developed a SMARTER goal system with the MOT measurement as
explained before. These work fine only if you have the minimal, obtainable and transformational
goals for each goal and milestone. However it’s the habits and systems you follow in achieving
those that matters most. The main reasons why I created the MOT system TM was because:

Goals Increase your Stress Levels.

The whole mind-set of setting goals says that you are not good enough and need to improve. I
believe in constant improvement, the mind wiring process needs to be better managed. Hence
the habits and systems put in place with the MOT system goals works wonders as its not binary
hit and miss. Also you feel you hit a goal be it minimal or transformational which gives you a
boost in confidence.
Focus on the process of the habits and systems and let the goals be met on its own.
Imagine in my case above if I set a goal of 1,2,3 books for the year or 300,400,700 quotes
and posters. The pressure and stress levels would be huge and sometimes demotivating.
So I released myself from that demotivating goal setting scenario and only focused on the
process, habit and systems.

Follow Habits with Systems as a Passion

I am not saying don’t set Goals, but set them with my SMARTER goals system with the MOT
measurements having really compelling reasons for the goals success and failures.
However what I also discovered is that with the daily habits and the processes with the systems
none of my goals can be achieved and it’s pointless and waste of time to plan such goals without
them.

I declare this as my “going against the grain of setting goals”!

“It’s like the Goals are your map of the ship’s destination and the daily log is the habits,
processes, actions and the systems that will get you there, because without that the destination
is just a dream.”
