Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar, Master of Nada (the yoga of sound), met his guru at the age of twelve in
his native India. In 1960 he moved to the United States where he developed a unique
psychospiritual theory of microchakras which profoundly enriches the classical understanding of
the chakras. His method of InnerTuning® combines microchakra theory with his exceptional gift
for chanting mantras and sounds that enhance the flow of energy within the subtle body. Shyamji
has collected a large body of clinical evidence suggesting that synchronization of the nasal cycle
with the lunar cycle is helpful for many disorders, including schizophrenia.
InnerTuning® excels in combining the psychological and spiritual aspects of life. For over four
decades, professionals and students in India, Europe, North and South America have found new
meaning in their lives through Shyamji’s work.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRANA CALENDAR™
This calendar is a tool for synchronizing the breath with the appearance of the new and full
moons. At dawn, when the breath is in sync with the lunar cycle, we feel the beneficial effects
for the rest of the day. If we maintain this synchronization regularly over an extended period of
time, we experience profound and lasting changes of a positive nature.
SVAR YOGA
Svar is the ancient yogic science that focuses on the most subtle aspects of breath. Very few
people are aware of it, even today in its native India, because it has been deliberately kept
hidden. The reasons for this secrecy are that relatively few people are able to follow a
sufficiently sattvic (pure) lifestyle which would enable them to benefit from it, and very few
competent gurus are available to teach it. Without the prerequisites of lifestyle and teacher,
attempts at Svar yoga can easily activate toxins (apana) within the body causing negative
effects from mild to severe.
Svar literally means “sound,” specifically the sound made by the breath. (It should not be
confused with pranayama breathing exercises) The aim of Svar yoga is the recognition of
divinity within. The particular means by which Svar yoga accomplishes this is through
manipulation and control of the breath.
Use of the Prana Calendar as one of the practices of InnerTuning® provides a means to get
started on some of the fundamentals of Svar yoga.
The founder of the system, Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar, explains that all our thoughts, feelings and
behaviors are influenced by the symphonic dance of 147 microchakras – the component parts
of the seven classical chakras. Microchakra Psychology™ is an in-depth study of the openings
and blockages in the microchakras. InnerTuning, which include the chanting of sacred sounds
and mantras, periodic fasting, meditation and breath control, are designed to open blocked
microchakras.
Close observation of the breath will reveal that the air that passes in and out of the nostrils is
variable. Sometimes the flow of air is greater in the left nostril, sometimes it is greater in the
2
right nostril, at other times, the airflow is even, passing through both nostrils with equal
volume. In most people the flow alternates at regular intervals.
The purpose of the nasal cycle is not well understood by mainstream science. What is known is
that the nose serves a vital role in maintaining good health by filtering inhaled pollutants and
pathogens and regulating the heat and humidity of inhaled and exhaled air. There is some
evidence that the nasal cycle controls the heat-humidity balance by enabling the mucosal cells
of the nasal passages to periodically rest and recharge. Modern science has only recently begun
to observe more profound effects of the nasal cycle, especially the cycle’s influence on the
brain.
Contrary to popular belief, no one is “left brained” or “right brained” and there is no such thing
as a “male” or “female” brain. However, the two hemispheres do work somewhat
independently, dividing up tasks and taking different approaches to the same problem. Both
sides of the brain make critical contributions to performance on all complex mental functions.
3
Ida flows through the left nostril and is supported by the moon. Pingala flows through the right
nostril and is supported by the sun. It is the experience of the Svar yogis that Ida supports the
world, Pingala creates the world, and Sushumna transforms the world.
On the first day of the full moon, Pingala (the sun Svar) flows, and the right nostril is more open
for 60 minutes. On the first day of the new moon, Ida (the moon Svar) flows, and the left nostril
is more open for 60 minutes. These Svaras alternate throughout the day and night and remain
powerful on the first three days of their respective fortnights.
When Ida is predominant, the mind is introverted and any sort of mental work is appropriate.
When Pingala is predominant, the mind is extroverted, body temperature rises, and more
energy is available for physical work. When neither Ida nor Pingala predominates, and the flow
in the nostrils is even, then Sushumna is open. The body will not be restless, nor will the mind
wander. Such a state is ideal for commencing meditation.
In Svar yoga, actions are performed in accordance with the appropriate Svaric flow. The flow is
controlled in order to affect the action, or the action is adjusted to suit the flow.
The human organism is continually seeking to draw from the environment what it needs to
maintain an ideal condition of balance and homeostasis. Thus, a person’s need for lunar energy
increases as the moon wanes and decreases as the moon waxes. The greater need for lunar
energy is satisfied by breathing predominantly through the left (lunar) nostril. The diminished
need for lunar strength is satisfied by breathing predominantly through the right (solar) nostril.
The cycle of the nostrils begins anew every two weeks with the coming of the full or dark moon
nights.
At the time of the new moon, the amount of lunar energy reaching earth is minimal. This
energy gradually increases for a period of two weeks until it reaches its peak at the time of the
full moon. For the next two weeks lunar energy gradually decreases, reaching its nadir at the
time of the next new moon. Just as the alternating nasal rhythm allows the nasal passages to
rebalance, so, too, does the alternating hemispheric rhythm allow the brain to re-establish
equilibrium. During the full moon cycle, when the right hemisphere has absorbed abundant
lunar energy for three consecutive days, the mind has a tendency to become obsessive or over-
emotional. The left hemisphere then absorbs solar energy to calm the mind, and reduce anxiety
and tension.
Svar yogis are sufficiently sensitive to subtleties of solar and lunar energy not to need a Prana
Calendar. For everyone else, though, the regular use of the Calendar will help to balance their
rational and emotional lives.

PROCEDURE
Rise at least 30 minutes before sunrise. After defecating and cleansing (longtime meditators will
also want to allow some time for yoga or stretching), sit quietly from 7 to 10 minutes before
sunrise until one minute after sunrise. Determine your dominant breath. Check the Prana
Calendar to see if your dominant nostril corresponds to the dominance indicated for that
particular day. If it does not, and you need to open the right nostril, lie on your left side, place a
pillow under the armpit, and lean on the left elbow. Keep the head raised, higher than the
torso. Reverse the procedure if you wish to open the left nostril. If after several minutes the
blocked nostril does not open, plug the more open nostril with a wad of tissue, or force the
breath through the blocked nostril with bellows breathing.
Svar yogis check their nostril dominance every dawn. Chakra Institute recommends that
sadhakas (aspirants) make this check at least once every two weeks, after the appearance of
the new and full moons.
This Prana Calendar is calculated for New York City. Elsewhere, please consult your local sunrise
time. On the Prana Calendar, time of sunrise is indicated for every day of the year. The notation
“L” means left nostril;
“R” stands for right nostril. Major fortnightly changes are indicated by shaded areas.

PHYSIOLOGY AND CHAKRA ENERGY
For millennia, yogis have emphasized the enormous importance of various forms of
detoxification in the first chakra hour: defecation, bathing, self-massage, yoga asanas, and
breathing exercises. With the indiscriminate use of electric light this wisdom has disappeared,
to our detriment. The chakras whose rhythms suffer most are the first (Muladhara, the “root
support”) and the sixth (Ajna, the “governor,”) which influences the region of the “third eye”
and the pineal gland.
The perfect time to clean the colon is when energy naturally centers in the first chakra, which
influences the region of the coccyx. The perpetual chakra energy chart (see below) shows that
energy concentrates twice every 24 hours in the first chakra. In the early morning first chakra
hour, the catabolic phase of digestion and detoxification culminates, while peristalsis and the
anabolic production of serotonin begins. The body stirs and there is an urge to defecate. There
is an increased output of energy from the causal body to the subtle body, and then on to the
physical level. Delay of the process of elimination due to late rising is one of the major reasons
for first chakra related disorders, whether constipation or colon cancer. The Chakra Energy
Chart gives precise timings for the commencement of the catabolic and anabolic phases of
metabolism.
Sixth chakra related disorders are a consequence of artificial night lighting, which confuses the
extremely light sensitive pineal gland and disrupts the secretion of melatonin. When we retire
too late and sleep through the sunrise, the pineal gland eventually becomes calcified.
A damaged pineal gland may accelerate aging, impair sexual reproduction and induce
precocious or delayed puberty. When the Prana Calendar is used at sunrise, the solar and lunar
currents are balanced, the cerebral hemispheres harmonize, and the pineal gland is nourished.

SUMMARY
1. One does not breathe through both nostrils simultaneously, except for very brief periods
when nostril dominance changes over. Usually, one nostril is dominant.
2. The cycle of the breath is directly related to the waxing and waning of the moon.
3. On the morning following NEW MOON (the darkest night) of the lunar cycle, a well-balanced
person’s left nostril is open at the time of sunrise. It remains open for one hour. Left nostril
dominance also occurs on the second and third mornings of the NEW MOON cycle. The reverse
situation occurs on the FULL MOON (brightest night) when the right nostril is open at sunrise.
4. When one nostril has been dominant for three successive mornings, a well-balanced person’s
dominant breath will shift to the other nostril for the next three mornings (subject to variances
in the 28 1/2-day lunar cycle).
5. When there is a disturbance in the nasal cycle, body chemistry becomes disrupted and
physiological and psychological imbalance becomes more likely.
6. Breath may be shifted by lying down on the opposite side of the blocked nostril with a pillow
placed under the armpit. This drains the mucous out of the blocked sinus and opens the nostril.
Change, in healthy people, happens within thirty seconds to ten minutes.
7. If the shift does not occur readily, block the open nostril and forcefully breathe through the
clogged nostril, or plug the open nostril with a wad of tissue until the changeover.
8. When the right nostril dominates, body chemistry is more acidic (because more stomach acid
is produced during right nostril operation).
9. When the left nostril is open, body chemistry is more alkaline, and body temperature
becomes cooler.
10. When the flow of air in the nostrils is equal, the practice of meditation is auspicious. This
state occurs naturally at the time before sunrise and sunset.
It is advisable to have a bowel movement and a shower before morning meditation. Negligence
regarding these prerequisites will eventually impede the flow of subtle energies in the body.
A quick response to nostril imbalance can avert ill effects. Change the breath by the methods
outlined above. Changing the breath at the first sign of any mental or physical disturbance will
prevent worsening of symptoms and promote rapid recovery.

THREE-BODY PURIFICATION
The Chakra Institute offers retreats to anyone—no matter your age or walk of life—to learn
how to address disturbances and claim your rightful bliss.
The Three-Body Purification Retreat is designed to flush out accumulated toxicity, interrupt
obsessive patterns of thinking, and resolve buried feelings. The detailed practices will allow you
to gradually rise above the mind, make right choices, and find joy in each day.As fundamentally
divine beings, we are all designed to be joyful and content. There is no need to settle for less.
The stresses of life, however, often sabotage us with negative thinking, emotional issues and
physical toxicity.
You will learn about the blueprint that has already been laid out for us by ancient teachers,
allowing us to put our minds and bodies to work for us, in service of our true nature. While
these teachings delve into higher thoughts, you’ll also find them to be utterly practical. You will
learn how to care for yourself well enough to adequately care for others.
Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar, the Chakra Institute’s founder, offers more than four decades of
experience and has guided thousands of people around the world. His unique ability to produce
the ethereal element of soorya akasha with his voice allows many people to experience
powerful changes.
Through his chants and teachings, and through meditation and a dietary protocol, you will
begin to purify your three bodies: the physical body, the causal body (thoughts) and the subtle
body (feelings).
The Retreat purifies and integrates the three bodies, which ancient Indian teachings refer to as:
Physical body: Between the cells of our physical body, there is considerable space. The other
two bodies (causal and subtle, described below) pervade this space—like radio waves pervade
the “solid” walls of a room.
Causal body: Where our thoughts reside. Human beings, in the process of survival, evaluate
changes in their environment first in the causal body by means of thought. Thoughts generate
feelings in the subtle body, which are then expressed in the physical body. Thoughts, feelings,
and sensations influence one another.
Subtle body: The seat of our feelings. The subtle body has seven major spinning wheels of light
energy (chakras), energized by the five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air
and akasha (space). Elements—and combinations of elements—play an essential role in
determining how we feel. Under conditions of stress and toxicity, the elements lose their purity
and potency. This may have a negative effect on our feelings. For example, when the earth
element is in abundance, we feel solid and grounded, and our confidence is strengthened, while
8
if earth is dispersed, we may feel weak and sluggish. When air is plentiful, we may feel buoyant
and more loving; if polluted, it can cause us to feel uncaring.
The three bodies are energized by five major pranas, or vital life forces. Of these five, the apana
prana is the detoxifier. Apana prana normally operates below the navel, where it facilitates
bodily functions of elimination such as urination. The stress of modern life putrefies apana,
however, affecting the purity of higher pranas. Therefore, different regions of the body can
manifest disorders ranging from constipation to depression, memory problems to dementia,
and even schizophrenia. When the apana is purified, digestion and bowel rhythm is improved,
and one feels grounded, clear, stable and light.
The light of the chakras travels through subtle pathways called microchakras. Blockages in the
microchakras cause stress, anxiety, addictive behavior and lack of confidence. When open,
these pathways lead to a more meaningful, productive, and joyful life, in harmony with the laws
of nature.
Physical body: Physical purification sharpens all five senses. It inspires the desire to keep the
body healthy. The dietary protocol is intended to cleanse the internal organs (liver, kidney,
bladder, spleen, blood and intestines), strengthen the immune system, and decrease sensitivity
to allergens. InnerTuning movements associated with each chakra are practiced and assist the
purification process. Regular exercise and a healthy diet become part of our routine.
Causal Body: The educational experience is empowering on many levels. The process of
thinking itself may begin to feel clearer. Interest in abstract thinking naturally emerges, along
with the desire to turn the senses inward (pratyahara). We chant sounds and mantras that
produce soorya (golden) akasha. This highly refined akasha pushes dense, toxic akasha out of
the causal body. The absorption of soorya akasha purifies apana, and helps to integrate the
three bodies, facilitating meditation and life transformation. Consequently, the breathing rate
drops dramatically and participants feel freer to meditate, refining thinking and facilitating life
transformation.
Subtle Body: Purification of the subtle body cleanses our feelings and emotions. The negative
ones may have been buried beneath our awareness. Sometimes, old memories from early
childhood emerge. This is part of the purification process. Since all participants are present for
the same purpose, they provide a supportive environment for one another. As participants
become in touch with their real feelings on a deeper level, they begin to lay the groundwork for
improvement in relationships, creating contentment as competitiveness evaporates—one can
truly feel happy when others are also succeeding. Helping others becomes a reward in and of
itself. Sri Shyamji’s sounds and mantras act deeply on the subtle body, increasing awareness of
the effects sounds have on body, mind and spirit. Many have reported a greater sound
awareness at the retreat’s end.
