TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY

A. Preparatory Activities

a. Prayer
Let’s pray first, please stand. (Praying)

b. Greetings
Good morning Class! Good morning Sir!
How are you today? We’re good, Sir!

c. Checking of attendance
Let’s check your attendance
according to your seat plan.

d. Setting of standard
As we start our class, I want
you to listen attentively
while I am discussing here
in front of you. And all of you
must cooperate in every
activity. If you want to answer
just raise your hand and
don’t answer in chorus.

Is that clear class? Yes, Sir!

Very Good!

A. Reviewing previous lesson or

Presenting the new lesson

a. Review
What was our topic last meeting?
Yes, Mariannie? - About the General Characteristics of
Enzymes.
Very Good!

What are those characteristics

of Enzymes?

Yes, Rodolfo? The General Characteristics of Enzymes

are the following:
1. Enzymes are biological catalysts
2. Speed up reactions although they are
not changed in the reaction
3. Enzymes are proteins
4. Shape is determined by the sequence
of amino acids
5. Enzymes speed up reactions
6. They have a specific shape

Very Good!

Any questions before we proceed? None, so far!

If none, then let’s have a game.

b. Motivation
This game is called “You Belong
With Me”. I will divide the class
Into three groups, this row will be
The group 1, this row will be the
Group 2, and this row will be the
Group 3.

I have here an emojis, what are

you going to do is to group these
emojis according to their facial
expression in order to classify them.
The first group who can finish the
Game first will be declared as winner
And will get 10 points while the
Other group will get 5 points.

Am I clear? Yes, Sir!

Alright!

Your timer starts now!

Give yourselves a round of applause!

So our topic for today has something

to do with classification.

B. Establishing the purpose for the lesson

Be alive, alert and awake for in this

topic you are going to explain the
classification of enzymes correctly
through reflective learning.
You are also expected to organize
classification table of enzymes actively
and lastly, create a classification table of
enzymes correctly.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new

Lesson

a. Unlocking of difficulties
Our topic for today is all about
CLASSIFICATION OF ENZYMES.

Before we proceed further, let us define

these following terms first because these
will be encountered by you as we go
along with our discussion.

Definition of terms

Oxidation and Reduction - an oxidation-

reduction (redox) reaction is a type of
chemical reaction that involves a transfer of
electrons between two species.

Catalyst - is a substance that speeds up a

chemical reaction, but is not consumed by
the reaction; hence a catalyst can be
recovered chemically unchanged at the end
of the reaction it has been used to speed up,
or catalyze.

Molecule - is the smallest particle in a

chemical element or compound that has
the chemical properties of that element
or compound. Molecules are made up of
atoms that are held together by chemical
bonds. These bonds form as a result of
the sharing or exchange of electrons among
atoms.

ATP - Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is

considered by biologists to be the energy
currency of life. It is the high-energy molecule
that stores the energy we need to do just
about everything we do.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new

Skills #1
Enzymes are generally named according to
the reaction they catalyze or by suffixing
“ase” after the name of substrate. The
International Union of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology developed a nomenclature
for enzymes.
EC denotes Enzyme Commission and the
number of enzyme is called EC numbers.

Enzymes are divided into six major classes with

several subclasses.
a. Oxidoreductases are involved in
oxidation and reduction.
b. Transferases transfer functional groups
(e.g., amino or phosphate groups).

c. Hydrolases transfer water; that is, they

catalyze the hydrolysis of a substrate.

d. Lyases add or remove the elements of

water, ammonia, or carbon dioxide to
or form double bonds.

e. Isomerases catalyze rearrangements

of atoms within a molecule.

f. Ligases join two molecules.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new

Skills #2

This time, we have another set of activity

Entitled: “Organize me properly”.
At the end of this activity, you are expected
to:
- organize the classification of enzymes; and
- classify the enzymes according to their
class and subclasses.
Mechanics:
With the same group that we have earlier you
are going to organize the enzymes according
to their class, subclasses and reaction carried
by the enzyme using the classification table.

Each group will be given a materials for your

activity. Finish it within 3 minutes. After the
given time, all your outputs must be tacked
on the board and I will be the one to choose
who is the reporter.

Is there any clarification with regards to

my instruction? None Sir!

(Distribution of the materials)

Alright, your time starts now.

A. Developing Mastery

(Presentation and processing of outputs)

(Giving of partial score)

B. Finding practical Application of concepts

and skills in daily living.

Now for our last activity with the same group

of course, you are tasked to perform a jingle
with the theme “Roles of Enzymes,
communicating with Enzymes”.

C. Making Generalization and Abstraction

About the lesson

Before we proceed to our quiz, I want to

Ask you first. I will give extra credit to
those who can answer my questions.

What are the 6 classes of enzymes?

Yes, _________? The six classes of enzymes are:

Oxidoreductases, Transferases,
Hydrolases, Lyases, Isomerases, and
Ligases.
Very Good!

What are the subclasses of

Oxidorecutases?

Yes, __________? Oxidases, Dehydrogenases, Oxygenases

and Peroxidases.
Very Good!

Last question, what are the

Subclasses of Ligases?

Yes, ________? Carboxylases, Synthetases.

I think you are now ready for our

Quiz.

D. Evaluating learning

In a 1 whole sheet of paper explain

the classification of enzymes in a
form of essay and a reflection on
the last part.

E. Assignment
In your notebook,
write the formula of
each of the classes of enzymes.
Good bye, class! Good bye and thank you, Sir!
