CHAPTER I
This chapter presents the introduction, statement of the problem, scope and
definition of terms.
Introduction
If one hopes to achieve even the simplest form of education, one must be in
the right condition (Anonymous, 2017). That means proper equipment, proper
mental state, proper motivation, and proper health condition. Any educational

are safe, secure, and satisfied. It is common knowledge that such an establishment
Sadly, some schools overlook these factors. Most schools have a canteen, at
least one guidance counselor who could also double as a discipline official, and a
security guard. This study focuses on one of the important facilities in a school,
school clinics. A school clinic must have at the very least one licensed nurse or a
medical practitioner. They will be the ones to administer medication but they are

This study will also tackle the proper equipment and facilities that a school
clinic must have. A school clinic cannot just have a first-aid kit. A packet of
bandages, gauze pads, and some pain relievers are not enough to accommodate all
This study aims to set a standard for what must be found in a school clinic,
ensuring that the clinic hosts the necessary equipment and facilities.
This study aims to determine the perspective of Grade 11 STEM students of Siena
College of Taytay about their School Clinic. It aims to acquire answers for the
following questions:

respondents to the Grade 11 ABM students as they are the ones who are more

Assumption
The study assumes that the respondents will answer the questionnaires
truthfully and based on their observations and experiences as patients of the School
Clinic.
The researchers believe that the study is note-worthy and the following will
benefit:
Future Medical Practitioners. They will gain more knowledge and information on
how to deal with different situations that they will encounter as professionals.
Future Researchers. They will find more information regarding the study. This
will help them gather data much easier and they will gain more knowledge
Health Clinic OIC. They will take note of the flaws and problems within the
clinic. The officer in charge might act and consider things that will improve their
clinic. This will help the environment in the clinic more suitable to the patients.
Medical Staff. The staff will notice what is lacking within the clinic. This will help
them to get a chance to improve the quality and services in their clinic and avoid
future complications.
Parents. They will be aware of what a school clinic should be offering to their kids.
The parents will be knowledgeable about services that the school clinic will help
their kids to have a better health. The proposal will give them information on what
makes a School Clinic complete and effective. This will help them ensure that their

A school clinic has 7 goals, as stated in a NCBI website. This NCBI website
is dedicated to the study of school health services. These 7 goals indicate the aim
that school health services must have. Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 are very important and
must be observed all the time. To summarize, these goals pertain to ensuring proper
medical attention for students within the school campus and during school hours
These school nurses are the ones who will be monitoring the students’ health. In
any given situation, he/she will be the one to administer medication and such. The
number of the school nurses or medical staff would vary depending on the location
and economic condition. A school could hire certain number of nurses based on
their need. Schools are also free to choose whether they would require their nurse to
In addition, the Oakridge International School have their own school clinic
guidelines. In their site, the list of their guidelines stem from the responsibilities of
their nurse, teachers, and the students’ parents. It states that observation must start
at home. If a parent sees their child to be unfit for school due to medical reasons,
they may keep their child at home. If they observe any lack of appetite and energy
from the child, they may choose to keep him/her at home. Same goes if the child is
rules for teachers. When they see the need to send a student to the clinic during
class, they must send the student with a Hall Pass. The student will be sent back to
class if he/she does not sport any disease that requires extreme attention. Their
school nurse may administer medication, if they are doing so with proper judgment,
As if agreeing to the guidelines of the OIS, the Cobb County School District
published an article about what equipment and supplies should be present in school
clinics. First, they stated that clinic personnel must have access to the emergency
disease, etc. In terms of equipments, clinics should have biohazard containers, file
medication cabinets for proper storages. School clinics must also have a call button
or a walkie-talkie, a clock with a second hand, sink with hot and cold water, a cot,
chairs and a restroom for the patient. The clinic must also have a computer, a
The Cobb County School District article also stated a checklist of things that
must be present in a school clinic. The list includes alcohol wipes, hydrogen
peroxide, cotton balls, paper cups, plastic medicine cups, dental floss, dental wax,
school approved disinfectants, eye pads, a first aid kit, disposable gowns, sanitary
napkins and many more. The checklist proposes various supplies that should help a
student in case of emergencies. These supplies may vary depending on the school
And, as an addition to the list provided by the Cobb County School District,
it can be read in the book School Clinic Regulation (2014), published by the Dubai
Health Authority, a set of regulations for their schools to follow regarding their
school clinics. It indicates that a school clinic must obtain a separate license apart
from the needed license in establishing a school. The clinic must be inspected by
government officials from the DHA before it is fully functional. It also provides a
certain clinic design requirement. A school must have a designated area for
clinic and its personnel. To summarize, they must obey DHA regulations such as
safety. The clinic must also have a list of students’ medical records to help in
acquire different medicines appropriate to different sexes. (2015) Hence, the same
goes for school clinics or any establishment that administers medicine to potential
and current patients. With this in mind, a school clinic must also have various
equipment and medical supplies suitable for potential needs of potential amd
current patients.
Synthesis
After obtaining such information, these suggest that having a school clinic is
equivalent to having an actual clinic within the school premises. These also suggest
12
that school clinics must avoid being understaffed and must avoid being incapable

Research Design
The researchers used Phenomenology as its research design for them to see
the general picture of the perception of Grade 11 ABM students of SCT regarding
type of qualitative research which deals to the study of subjective lived experiences
and perspectives of respondents. The researchers used this kind of research design
because the study aims to know the perceptions and experiences of an individual,
same with their idea since the topic is about the completeness of School Clinic as
This research will study the Grade 11 ABM students of SCT. The reason for
choosing this population is that this strand has the highest number of students who
visited the clinic. Since this study is about the perception of grade 11 ABM students
of SCT on the completeness of their school clinic, it is also the reason for choosing
respondents. Five respondents each from the six sections of Grade 11 ABM.

The study is done in SCT School Health Clinic. It is a school health center

limited number of medical specialists and paramedical staff. Now, they have

After gathering and analyzing the data from the questionnaires, the
researchers will then review the answers of the respondents. They will create a
table showing the percentage of the data. The researchers will group the answers
from the respondents in one table to organize the data. Each gathered data will be

The table presents how the respondents see their school clinic in terms of

the medical supplies except for the sanitary supplies. It still supports the checklist
for school clinic supplies studied by the Cobb County School District(2014). The

The researchers conclude that the school clinic provides the proper facilities
for their potential patients. Similar to what the DHA (2014) has provided in
one of the books they have published, the school clinic provides a waiting

provide privacy from the opposite sex. Under the circumstances that some

For the parents, to be vigilant in checking if the school clinic that will be

equipment that their child might need. If such medicine is not found in the
clinic, they must be responsible enough to have their child carry enough
