Questions:

1.) Think about the phrases “babae kase”, “haligi ng tahanan’’, ‘’pakipot’’. How these
words communicate patriarchy?

2.) Interview people from (2 adolescents, 2 adults, and 2 elderly) and ask them what
they think of when they hear the words ‘’Gender and Sexuality’’. Then ask them what
influenced them to have these thoughts?

3.) In relation to #2 reflect about their answers. How do they compare to your own
understanding. What would be the implications?

Answers:

1.) "Haligi ng tahanan" is commonly referring to the father of a family. The word
symbolises father as the strongest member of a family, he is the one who working hard
to provide and fulfill the needs of his wife and children, he used to be the one managing
difficulties, and a proctector and foundation of the family. The phrase "babae kase" used
as an exception when there are some things we describe to a woman like "babe kase
kaya iyakin, babae kasi kaya malambot ang puso, babae kase kaya maingay, and etc.”
Also, "pakipot" is the common term we used to portray a woman, we all knew that
almost of the girls are "pakipot" especially the time back then. For me, because of being
"pakipot" man learn how to respect us, even before, if a man likes a woman they should
undergo in traditional courtship and talk to parents with sincerity.

May Ann Duga, 16yo

‘’For me, it’s very difficult to express my thoughts about gender and sexuality. But, as far
as I know from my past learnings, gender talks about the role of a male or female in
society. Nowadays, LGBTQIA+ can define gender where represents someone’s identity.
And, sexuality are distinguished respectively as female or male especially on the basis
of their reproductive organs and structures.’’

(b) Adults

Annabelle Duga, 40yo

‘’Sometimes Facebook is useful in a situation like this. Well social media says that
gender and society are not the same in a way that gender is about how we look on
people based on their identity, but sexuality is what God’s created the male and female,
and their reproductive system.’’

Renante Duga, 42yo

‘’My friends and I already discussed about it. Our opinion about gender is simply those
gays, lesbian, boys, and girls existed today. We think that they seek attention from
society where they belong, aiming the freedom they deserved and yet they should act
accordingly. And, if there is a lesbian in my daughters, make sure that you will never
show your face on me, or else, you already knew what I mean Rennabelle. ‘’

Bayani Gatapia, 76yo

‘’I remembered my old days, gender and sexuality are almost the same, because gays
and lesbian are rare. Before, only male and female are the members of the family and
society. When our father found out that there is a gay in his children it is a shame for
him and he will send you out from the family with a lot of bruise. God only gave two sex,
the man and a women, no other than that since it is an immoral to have another sex
beyond that.’’

Date: January 28, 2020

Estela Carido, 70yo

‘’Gender and sexuality is different in your generation from ours. Before, lesbian and
gays are not accepted in a society. It is a big deal when it one of your brother is a gay,
it’s a shame for the family. As your Grandparents it is hard for us to accept additional
gender called LGBTQIA+, since we believed that God created only man and women.
For us, being a gay or lesbian is indecent. It is not acceptable in some religion’’

3.) Based on the interview I conducted, I noticed that the respondent answers from the
words Gender and Sexuality in different ways but almost in the same thoughts. It's a
little bit funny when I asked some elders, because, there are some bad words they used
just to express their answer to my questions. Especially my father, he warned me about
the LGBTQIA+, yes, he respect it but he didn’t want us as her daughters to be part of it.
According to my elders ‘’gender and sexuality’’ are the same which is the male and
female, LGBTQIA+ is unacceptable during their times. They said that they really obey
and believed in God's creation, the man and women. Adolescents and adults says
gender about LGBTQA+ and sexuality is the distinction of a man and woman based on
their reproductive organs, and referring the only male and female created by God.

Well, their thoughts, my own understanding, and the true meaning of "Gender and
sexuality" are the same. Maybe it came from different sources but one in ideas.
"Gender" defines as the social interpretation of sex; masculinity and feminity. "Sexuality"
is the totality of our own experience of our sex and gender; it is the way people
experience and express themselves sexually. This involves biological, erotic, physical,
emotional, social, or spiritual feelings and behaviors. The implications of my interview
would be some of my respondents especially adolescents enlighten about Gender and
Sexuality, since we used to have a conversation in a casual way and also shared my
thoughts and the true meaning about it. Lastly, despite of those unacceptable words I
heard from my elders because of that LGBTQA+ , they still gave me a piece of advice
like I have to respect those people, since, they are still part of our society and respect
their self-expression/ identity on their own good ways.
