NUTR 1010 Assignment

Part 1A:

I have chosen is a health website by Dr. Mark Hyman but I will be focusing on
only one of his blog posts titled "Dairy: 6 Reasons You Should Avoid it at all
Costs" (http://drhyman.com/blog/2010/06/24/dairy-6-reasons-you-should-avoid-
it-at-all-costs-2/). This blog post claims that dairy products are actually
damaging to human health despite the fact that most people were raised to
believe that drinking milk is crucial for healthy bones. Dr. Hyman claims that
dairy products were not meant for human consumption and are only beneficial to
calves.

Part 1B:
1. The claim makes a lot of sense because a cow's milk is meant to be consumed
by a calf. It has the hormones and nutrient that a baby cow needs to grow rapidly
in a short amount of time. It is no surprise that so many people are lactose
intolerant and are unable to consume dairy without having digestion trouble.

2. The information comes from a credible source because the author is a doctor.
He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Ottawa and
competed his postgraduate training at the University of California. He is a
practicing family physician, the director of the Cleveland Clinic Centre for
Functional Medicine, an author, and a medical contributor for many TV shows.
3. Dr. Hyman does sell his books and health programs on his website, however,
this does not affect the information he has provided. The blog post is unbiased
because he is not trying to sell a product by writing this blog post. He is simply
showcasing what kind of content his books talk about.

1C:
I trust the source and the information they have provided because the author has
a Doctorate of Medicine which requires a lot of education and knowledge. He is
also an experienced family doctor so he is capable of giving accurate and useful
information about nutrition.

Part 2:

1. My response to Craig Valeriote’s post:

I agree that the source is very credible especially because it is stating both pros
and cons of creatine instead of just focusing on just one of the sides. The article
is letting the reader form their own opinion about creatine instead of simply
endorsing it because I believe everything has a pro and con to it. Having input
from a university professor aids in the credibility of the information provided. I
personally would trust this article for information regarding creatine
consumption.
2. My reponse to Keegan Garrett’s post:

I would have to agree that this source is not credible because the author is only
speaking on personal experience and does not include any reliable sources to
back up her claims. The information provided could be either true or false but it
is not reliable without scientific sources. I personally would not trust a student
because they are not yet certified so their information may not be entirely
accurate.

3. My response to Kathleen Jacques’s post:

I agree with all the points you made. The information given makes a lot of sense
because I've personally done research on amaranth and all the articles I've looked
at have said the same thing about amaranth's nutritional benefits. It is slightly
concerning that you were unable to confirm the author's credentials online,
however, the website is not selling any products which makes it more trustworthy
in my opinion. The information may not be entirely accurate because we cannot
confirm the author's credentials, but I think the article is good for those who are
just starting out their research and want the most basic information.
