In the first half of the 20th century, there have been two major wars – the First World War in 1914 and the
Second World War in 1939. These wars are called the World Wars because they involved almost the whole world.
These wars were fought on land, on seas and in the skies.

By 1900, the strongest European nations- Britain, Germany and France were jealous of each other’s industrial
wealth and envied each other’s colonies overseas. In 1914, war broke out in which Germany, Austria, Hungary and

Turkey fought against Britain, Russia and France. War lasted till 1918. The Second World War took place in 1939
and ended in 1945 when the USA dropped atom bombs on two Japanese cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. These
cities were reduced to ashes. Leaders of many powerful nations of the world Winston Churchill, Joseph Stallin,
Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to form an organisation that would save the human race. Thus, the United Nations
Organisation was formed, the term UN was coined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It came into being on 24th
October 1945. Delegates from 50 countries met at San Francisco to draft a Charter for the UN. The headquarters of
the UN is at Manhattan in New York City of the USA.

Saudi Arabia has hot climate. The rainfall is scanty less than 25 cm. The summer season is from May
to September. The weather is hot and dry during the day time. The nights are relatively cool. The
winter season is from October to April. The days are warm and nights are very cold. Sandstorms are
common in all season.
In the Prairies machines have almost replaced the manual labour. Explain.
The entire farm work in prairies of ploughing, sowing , harvesting, threshing and winnowing is done
with machines. The storing of foodgrains is silos are also done with machines. The machines have
replaced the manual labour as only a few labours are able to cultivate thousands of hectares. Even
the milking of cow is done with machines.
a. How does latitude affect the climate of a place?
Places located on or near the equator receives direct rays of the Sun, while placesnear the two ploes
receive the slanting rays of the Sun. Slanting rays have to travel through a greater distance, hence

lose most of their heat as compared to direct rays that have to travel a shorter distance and hence
retain most of their heat. So the closer the place is to the equator , the hotter is its climate. The closer
the place to the poles, the colder is its climate.
