ABSTRACT

Attaining high grades is difficult, especially in academics. There is also various

influences in the environment that can or will affect the student’s performance. The

main objective of this research is to know the factors affecting the academic

performance of the Grade 11 STEM students of Notre Dame of Trece Martires.

This study will conducted in the Notre Dame of Trece Martires with the

participation of the Grade 11 STEM with a sample size of 180 with the age ranging

from 15 to 20 years old. The sample were selected using the convenience

sampling.

The type of research that the researchers will use is the descriptive type of

research wherein researcher will conduct a survey by giving questionnaire to the

participants. For the survey to be both reliable and valid the questions are easy to

read and understand so that there will be no interruption while answering the

questionnaire and it will constructed properly.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Nowadays, social media is one of the source of knowledge or learnings of a

students that help in their academic performance. Social media help the all STEM

students in Notre Dame of Trece Martirez to be updated on what happening now.

The world has been changed rapidly by the evolution of technology as the best

medium to explore the wide area of knowledge. In this generation, many students

use social media include: Twitter, Yahoo, Messenger, Facebook, Skype, Instagram,

and Google to interact easily their new and old friends. Some of them they use social

media to themselves for any assignment or project in school and had been the

source of happiness for many student.

This study will focused on the all STEM students that been enrolled in Notre Dame

of Trece Martirez and social media factors that affects their academic performance.

And how to improve their academic performance of the students by helping the

social media. Social networking websites is an online service for people who want

social relations to other people around the world. We are widely used nowadays in

our developing country. Most of us provide interactions of different people who share

the same interests, likes and even real-life connections.

10
The researchers` aim to discover the Factors of Social Media that affects the

Academic Performance and the importance of having a Social Media of the students.

With such information provided, the researchers decided to push through the study.

Statement of the Problem

This study is intended to determine the social media factors that affects the

academic performance of slected STEM students in Notre Dame of Trece Martirez.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of :

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

2. Is academic performance affected by:

2.1 Laziness

2.2 Lack of sleep

2.3 Stress

2.4 Lack of confidense

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Related Literature

Social media continuously keeps changing and as such it is difficult to assign a

fixed definition to it as Jacka and Scott (2011), argued that ‘’there is no single

recognized definition for social media’’. However some scholars have defined it in

different perspectives over the past years.Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), defined

social media as a group of internet- based applications that build on the ideological

and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and allow the creation and exchange of

user-generated content. The Oxford dictionary (2011), also defined social media as

“websites and applications used for social networking”. Another definition of social

media is that it is a ‘’communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast

and broad, has proven to be highly effective, as well as trusted by billions of people

, to share and discover content concerning individuals, brands, information,

entertainment and knowhow’’ (Dearborn, 2014). One theme that all these definitions

underpin is that social media involves some form of communication between

individuals over the internet. Social media began in the late 1990s with the first

recognized social media network called “SixDegrees “ in 1997 and this technology

enabled people to upload a profile and make friends. From 1997 to 2001 a number

of community tools; Asian Avenue, blackplanet and MiGente began supporting

13
various combination of profile and publicly articulated friend (Boyd, Danah, Ellison

and Nicole, 2007). There has been tremendous improvement since this era and

today there exist uncountable social networking sites either developed for local use,

specific purpose or international use.

Conceptual Framework

The Input-Process-Output model above shows the general structure and guide for

the path of the study. The Input of the research contains the determination or

research locals selection of the respondents and demographic variables the process

contains the data gathering procedure and the application of the statistical treatment.

Lastly, the output contains the determination of Social Media factors that affects

academic performance.

Definition of Terms

Archives - Most often an index page, often organizing posts or entries by either

category or date.

Blog - A website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological

order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a

blog.

15
Clicks - the number of times your post was clicked on by a reader to "read more" or

get to additional content.

Profile Picture - A picture uploaded to your social media profile to indicate who you

are. Sometimes your profile picture is used without your name to show you posted

a comment. Depending on the social media platform, you'll decide what kind of

image to use for your Profile Picture.

Hashtag- The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics when

posting on social media. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to

categorize messages, but all social medias now use hashtags to group subjects.

Anyone searching the hashtagged subject will be able to see your post if you use a

hashtag.

Hyperlink - A clickable image or text that brings you to another web page or

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researcher will be using is Descriptive research in the design. This method is

one of the easiest survey method that the researchers used. Using this method the

researcher will gather information by using survey. By this survey the participants

will answer the questions about social media factors that affects academic

performance. The researchers made the questionnaire easy to understand and

answered.

The Sample

The respondents of our study are the selected STEM students in Notre Dame of

Trece Martirez. In this case the selected Stem students have enough knowledge

about social media factors that affects academic performance and the questionnaire

is easy to answer. The student is informed of what they are going to answer. Out of

one hundred (180) participants thirty Stem students will randomly selected in each

room. The first step leading to the process is to collect quantitative data is to identify

people and their place. The researchers choose the English class which has the

huge number of students.

18
The Instrument(s)

The quantitative instrument for this study is a survey. Ohaya(2003) de fiend this

study as the study of characteristics of a sample through questioning, which enables

the researchers to make generalization concerning the population of his/her study.

For questioning the information of respondents is easy to gather.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers conduct a room-to-room survey to selected STEM and selected

thirty (30) in every section. The researcher use the time of vacant or a lunch break

to interrupt none of the discussion and to know the data of participants and hi/her

information and to answer the questionnaire in the survey.

19
Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results of the research obtained from the implementation

of the data gathering procedures followed by the discussion of each result. The

results were carefully gathered, analyzed, and interpreted relating to the research

questions which serves as the guide of this study.

Problem 1: What is the demographic profile of the participants in terms of

(1)age, (2) gender, (3) year/strand/section?

As seen on Table 1, one hundred (100%) of the participants belong to the

category of the age ranging from 16-118 years old, forty-two point twenty (42.20%).

Eleventh grade, junior year, or grade 11 (called Year 12 in England) is the eleventh,

and for some countries final, grade of secondary schools. Students are typically 16–

17 years of age, depending on the country and the students' birthdays (Wikipedia).

The majority of the participants are male with the percentage of (49.08%) compared

to female with only (50.92%). According to the school record of the Notre Dame.

Includes results and discussion relevant to the second question of the research

or the second variable of the study.

`Problem 2: Are the academic performance of STEM students of Notre

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

The researchers started the study with their goal to identify, investigate and finalize/

conclude the social media factors that affects the academic performance of the

selected STEM students . The Researchers starts in constructing the questionnaires

that is used to gather information and distributed to the 180 selected STEM. The

cooperation of the members of the research led them in to the final answers that

comes from the information in the questionnaires answered by the participants.

And among the factors given by the researchers in the questionnaires provided, due

to social media, sometimes they forgot there school works and responsibility as a

students in there Academic Performance the most.

Recommendations

After conducting this research, the researchers recommend:

1. Students must more focus on their academic performance than using social

media.

2. Except of copying answer or projects in social media, why not we study and

think or make our own answers and ideas.

3. The parent must have a time plan for their children to use social media so that

the students/children is have an capacity in using it.

23
4. The school must do more activities that make students to become more

confidence and to be healthy.

5. Teachers have a big part in the studying of students. Teachers should also act

as a parent of the students in the school and invent or create strategies in the

way of educating for the better.

6. The students should avoid those factors that might affect ther academic

performance negatively and create plans and actions when they are

experiencing this hardships.

7. Family should always consult and ask their children about the happenings on

their studying and always gives support and advices that will make feel the

student more motivated or inspired.
