Utilization of Marine Oyster Shells (Crassostrea gigas) and Mussel Shells waste (Perna

canaliculus) for Locally-Based Bricks Production

RESEARCH PLAN

A. Question or Problem being addressed

1. Can oyster shells and mussel shells acceptable as a primary component in making

bricks?

2. What is the significant difference between oyster shell and mussel shells bricks as

compared to the commercial bricks in terms of its durability?

3. Are oyster shell and mussel shells bricks acceptable in terms of color and texture?

B. Goals/ Expected Outcomes/ Hypotheses

This study aims to determine if oyster shells and mussel shells is acceptable for a locally based

bricks production. Specifically, this study aims to address the following:

1. Determine if oyster shells and mussel shells is acceptable as primary component in making

locally based bricks in terms of:

a. Color

b. Texture

c. Durability

2. Determine the difference between oyster shell and mussel shells bricks production as

commercial bricks in terms of durability.

C. METHODOLOGY

I. Research Design

II. Preparation of Pulverized Shells

The raw materials from aquatic shell wastes will be gather in sacks directly at Barangay

Talaban, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental which will be grind into powder form using

the shell grinder and a furnace at Negros Prawn Diagnostics and Analytical Laboratory,

Bacolod City. The powdered shells will be prepare by sieving using Sieve No. 10 (200 mm)

to meet the cement standard size and oven dried for at least 18 hours or to a constant

weight. The over-dried samples will be place in a tightly sealed container to maintain its

conditions.
III. Physical, Chemical and Mechanical Observation and Testing of Powdered

Shells

The Negros Prawn Diagnostics and Analytical Laboratory, Bacolod City will utilize in

the conduct of physical, chemical and mechanical observation and testing of powdered

shells and Portland cement.

IV. Mixing and preparation of masonry cement mortar

The component materials will be proportion in a way as indicate in ASTM C 188/ C 109 M-

95 for 18 samples per mix design per type of shell.

The pulverized shells will first incorporate with cement and then mix thoroughly. Then add

with other materials ( sand and water ) and thoroughly mix in a mechanical mixer to

achieve the proper consistency of a concrete mixture to avoid voids which decreases the

compressive strength of a concrete
