ADDICTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT OF

GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF POLILLO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN THE

YEAR 2019-2020

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Addiction on social media, it is when a person uses social media for a

long period of time. People in this generation that is addicted on social media
is very evident.

Financial management on the other hand is how a person manages

his/her money by listing them down and saving the excess.

So when a person gets addicted on social media, of course he/she will

spend money to pay for the data charges online which will surely affect
him/her financially. He or she will keep on paying for the data charges that
will obviously satisfy him/her and will destroy his financial management.

This research will surely help the respondents by guiding them on how
to manage their money or allowances properly. This will also help them
manage their time to lessen or completely take away their addiction on
social media.

There is a significant relationship between addiction on social media

and financial management of randomly selected students of grade 12
students of Polilllo National High School.

this school was built last 2016 because of the law and program that was
implemented by the government which was the k - 12 program. So the
problem that the researchers are researching about is the addiction in social
media of students in Polillo National High School – Senior High that is
affecting their financial management negatively.

Polillo is just a small province not really exposed yet on new

technologies that the world is now living with. So students in Polillo National
High School – Senior High who now have phones want to keep up with the
trend, they also want to experience what those devices offers which includes
the social media. Social media is one of the top trends because it really
offers a lot, it has various of functions which can satisfy you and can make
your life easier.

It is highly proven that students in this generation really crave for

attention, one of the things that they get the attention from is the social
media. They use social media a lot, they post their pictures, what's on their
mind, they comment on stuffs that they just saw, and worst is they talk
carelessly to people that they don’t even know. Though these activities
require data which you have to spend money to get, they still continue doing
it which negatively affects their management of their money. They still do it
because they're fond of it, that makes them happy and satisfied in their own
way which is not a good thing cause like what people say "too much of
something is bad". And yes, this is a very evident problem.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE (FOREIGN)

1. Information technology makes the world a global village and

connects the people from all over the world. Usage of information
technology in social media, increase its popularity in the youth
especially in students of universities. (IJAR, 2016)

2. Several empirical studies have proven that large number of college

students borrows to finance their college education and as a result
they tend to accrue a significant amount of debts which put them at
greater risk for financial problems after graduation. This reiterates
the fact that senior high school and college students in recent times
have easy access to funds but on the contrary have shown to have
inadequate financial literacy and as a result have become impulsive
buyers. This calls for urgency to shape the attitudes and spending
habits of senior high school and college students during their stay
on campus. (et. al. Huddleston, 2011)

3. The social networking addiction of the students was at moderate

level and the male students had a higher level of addiction
compared to the female students. There was a negative and
significant relationship between the overall use of social networks
and academic performance of students. Therefore, it is imperative
that the university authorities take interventional steps to help
students who are dependent on these networks and, through
workshops, inform them about the negative consequences of
addiction to social networks. (et. al. Azizi, 2019)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE (LOCAL)

1. In the Philippines social media has a big part and role in our
society. It gives us all the information that we need. Social media
helps people and organization to remain connected and update in
everything that was happening to our country. Social media in this
modern technology has so much to give to Filipino people; they
help people find ways, help people to find recent news and help
people with advertising. (Fernando, 2018)
2. Social media serves as the internet to majority of Filipino online
users. Over 80% of the Philippine Internet population uses social
media. In Universal McCann’s 2008 Wave 3 study on social media,
the Philippines has the highest penetration of social networking
among Internet users at 83%, compared with the global average of
58%. Among the available social media platforms, Filipino online
users prefer using Facebook over Twitter, Tumbler, Pinterest among
others, with 92% having profile and with women as the most active
users. For Filipino online users, Facebook is the easiest and
cheapest to access. Mobile networks in the Philippines offer it for
free as package for data plan or as an incentive for subscribing to
their network. (Brutas,2016)
3. Traditional-aged college students have involved social media
technology in their everyday a primary means of communication
information seeking and a central component of their identity and
community building. With the current statistics on the adolescents
as the primary users of social media, there are researchers and
professionals who have demonstrated the reasons why young
adults tend to use social media more than adults or older people.

Quezon which is Polillo National High School — Senior High where the primary
respondents are senior high school students of the said school.

RESPONDENTS

The respondents in this study were composed of 53 randomly - selected

senior high school students of Polillo National High School — Senior High.
They are grade 12 students who were enrolled during school year 2019 — 2020.

questionnaires, the researchers started collecting the distributed questionnaires.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT
The data that were collected were subjected to statistical treatment in
order to help the researcher to interpret the results of her study. The formulas
that were used are the dollowing:

Problem 1: Percentage

Formula: P = n/N×100

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency

N = Total number of the respondents

Problem 2, 3 & 4: Weighted Mean

Formula: WM=4(n)+3(n)+2(n)+1(n)/N

Where:

WM = Weighted mean

n = Number of frequency

N = Total number of respondents

Problem 5: Chi— square

Formula: x² = (O-E)²/E

Where:

x² = Chi-square

O = Observed value

E = Expected value
