We are looking for a title sponsor to join our single handed sailing campaign in 2011. Julian Megson is a disabled
yachtsman who aims to be the fastest disabled yachtsman to sail single handed and un-assisted around the coast of
Great Britain and Ireland.
Previous attempts by disabled sailors to circumnavigate Great Britain single-handed, have taken around 3 months or
more to complete. Julian aims to smash this time and complete the journey in just 3 to 4 weeks. This is a story of
endurance and will demonstrate the drive needed to succeed against the odds.
To add to this already impressive marketing and PR opportunity – British single-handed yachtsman Steve White, has
agreed to appear at the campaign launch or at the start. Steve White is one of Britain‟s top yachtsmen. He captivated
worldwide audiences during his successful campaign in the „Vendée Globe‟ single handed, non-stop around the world
yacht race in 2008/2009. Around 50,000 people turned out on the harbour wall to see him finish the race.
The Round Britain and Ireland sail is an integral part of Julian‟s ambition to compete against the able bodied in one of
the upcoming single handed transatlantic yacht races.

Why_Sponsor_Sailing
Sailing sponsorship gives a unique platform for marketing
and has the potential to reach international audiences. It
comes with the unique asset of a yacht with large sail
area, which can branded and used as a billboard and
displayed at a variety of media and public environments.
TV and Radio audiences can follow up and engage via the internet, either visually with video, still
images as well as from written blogs, and audio. Animated computer graphics that display the relative
positions of the yacht in real time continue the advancement in technology. This has made sailing
more tangible and has brought gripping stories to a global audience, directly into their living rooms
and workplaces.
“…we were able to link up live to the boat, while they were sailing in the Doldrums, and have the crew answer shareholders questions
live while racing. That was a powerful message to our shareholders, to be able to showcase our technology in such an amazing way”.
When sailing a long voyage, the generating and efficient use of power is finely balanced and is
always at the forefront of the skipper‟s mind. The yacht has to be self-sufficient for the entire voyage. It
must generate and sustain enough power to run the navigational instruments, telemetry devices,
media and communications, auto-pilots, and all onboard systems. It is a crucial and integral part of
this venture that during the Around Britain circumnavigation, the technology we use is able to
generate as much power as possible, while being efficient enough to use as little power as possible.
The use of solar panels and wind turbines and energy efficient devices are now common place in the
world of long haul sailing.

“I believe life is for living and I want my life to be full of the most wonderful experiences and to challenge my abilities. But
much more than that, I want to show that living with disability does not mean having to live a less than ordinary life and that
the ability to excel is within us all.
Living with disability just means things can be harder, but the harder the challenge, the greater the achievement when you
succeed.”
Julian Megson
On the face of it, Julian is a most unlikely candidate for sailing. He grew up in modest
surroundings within a working class family in land-locked Bradford, England. He has a
condition called Spina-Bifida, a disability which affects the spine and makes walking
difficult. But he has never let this stand in his way of living his life to the full. His love of
adventure has taken him half way across the Atlantic Ocean as well as sailing off the
coast of Britain, Channel Islands and Northern France.
He started sailing in February 2007 and since then he has never looked back. It began on
a stormy night during one of his first few days at sea. The wind was gusting to over 60
knots; it howled and whistled through the rigging like a Hollywood soundtrack. Julian was
at the helm as big waves crashed over the decks. When asked what it was about that
night that compelled him to sail, he is unable to answer other than to say his skin bristled
with something he can‟t begin to describe. It‟s a cliché for sure, but never in all his life did
he feel so alive.

With sailing he suddenly found himself being able to challenge himself where his disability
held little disadvantage. It‟s not about trying to be the same as others, but about living his
life to the full. He knows with sailing he has a chance to make his mark, attain
achievements beyond thought possible and to go where most able bodied people
would not dare. Sailing is a fire in his belly that just refuses to go out.
One of Julian‟s deepest desires is to prove to people living with disability that „foolish
dreams‟ can come true regardless what difficulties life has presented. He hopes by sailing
around Great Britain and Ireland, that it will inspire disabled people to do even greater
things themselves. He says if he can do it, then anyone can.
In just a short time Julian has already demonstrated his drive. He‟s sailed with Steve White
on his Open 60 race yacht and crewed on a 65 foot yacht on a 1200 mile voyage from
The Azores. He sails his 24 foot boat single handed and with friends off the coast of Britain
at every opportunity.
Julian is determined to succeed and he refuses to accept his lot. He continues to work
hard and to seek opportunities to increase his offshore sailing experience. His ultimate aim
is to be the first disabled person in the world to compete against the able bodied, and
win, in a main stream single handed transatlantic yacht race.
