The Legend of Lau Kawar Lake

It was a beautiful day. Everybody in the

just had their best harvest. The villagers were
planning to hold a party to celebrate the good
harvest. On one beautiful day, all the villagers
gathered in a field. They wore beautiful dresses
and made delicious food. Everybody was having
good times. They were singing, laughing and,

Did everyone go to the party? Unfortunately, there was one old woman still staying at her
house. She was too old and weak to go to the party. Her son, her daughter-in-law, and her
grandchildren all went to the party. At home, the old woman felt very sad and lonely. She was
very hungry too. She tried to find some food in the kitchen, but she was very disappointed.
Her daughter-in-law did not cook that day. At the party, the son asked her wife, “Why don’t

you take some food from the party and give it to my mom? Ask our son to deliver it.” Then
the little boy brought the food to her grandmother. The old woman was so happy. But her

that someone had eaten the food. She just got little rice and fish bones.
The old woman was very sad. She thought bad things about her son. The old woman did
not know that it was her grandson who had eaten the food on the way from the party to the
house. She cursed her son. Then, a terrible thing happened. There was a great earthquake!
Thunders struck the village. And heavy rains started to fall. All the villagers were so scared.
They wanted to save themselves. They tried to find shelters. Slowly, the field turned into a
lake. The lake was getting bigger and bigger, and finally the whole village turned into a big
lake. People then named the lake Lau Kawar

Do you know where the name Hong Kong comes from?


There are several interesting stories about this. A long time ago, there was a village
near Arberdeen called “Hong Kong Ts’un” or “Incense Harbour Village”. The incense grown
there was famous throughout China. Some of it was even sent to the Chinese Emperor.
Some people believe that the name Hong Kong comes from this village.
What happened to this village? One day, the Emperor wanted some incense sent to
him from the village. The villa gers did not send it to him. The Emperor then ordered his
officer to arrest the village headmen and cut off their heads. After that, everyone ran away
from the village and no more incense was grown there.
But some other people believe that Hong Kong is named after a container for burning
incense. Long, long ago, this container was picked up in the harbor. It was kept in a tample
at Causeway Bay. The place where it was found was called “Hong Kong” or “Incense
Harbour”
There is a third story that Hong Kong is named after a woman called Hong ku. She
was the wife of a pirate chief. After her husband died, she became the leader of the pirates.
She then moved to the island which is now called Hong Kong. If this story is true, the name
“Hong Kong” means “Hong’s Harbour”.
According to yet another story, Hong Kong is named after a stream near Pokfulan Road.
The water was very pleasant to drink. Many years ago, people used to go there to collect
drinking water. The stream was called “Hong Kong” or “sweet stream”.

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look the fact. At


least 50 thousands people die every year in Britain as direct result
of smoking. This is seven times as many as die in road accidents.
Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by

Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we
smoke five cigarettes a day, we are six times more likely to die of

Jack and the beanstalk

Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had an only son named Jack. They
were so poor that they didn’t have anything except a cow. When the cow had grown too old,
his mother sent Jack to the market to sell it. On the way to the market, Jack met a butcher
who had some beautiful beans in his hand. The butcher told the boy that the beans were of
great value and persuaded the silly fad to sell the cow for the beans.
Jack brought them happily. When he told his mother about this, his mother became so
angry that she threw the beans out of the window.
When Jack woke up in the morning, he felt the sun shining into a part of his room but
all the rest was quite dark and shady.
So he jumped to the window. What did he see? The beanstalk grew up quite close past

Half-Screen Mountain Story

There is a famous mountain between Nan-Tzu and Tso-Ying near Kaohsiung in southern
Taiwan. It is called “Half-Screen Mountain”, as it looks like a Chinese screen with one half
missing. Do you know why it is called Half-Screen Mountain?
Long, long ago, this mountain was jealous of another mountain next to it. The other
mountain’s name was Jade Mountain. Jade Mountain was higher than Half-Screen Mountain
but Half-Screen Mountain did not want to admit this.
One day, it challenged Jade Mountain. “Let’s see who is the higher,” it said. “God can
be our judge.”
Jade Mountain was angry as it knew it was the higher of the two. “Don’t be foolish. You
know I am higher.” It replied.
“Impossible!” Half-Screen Mountain said. “I am so high that if a piece of bean curd were
placed on my head, the sky would be broken.”
At this moment, God was passing by and heard what Half-Screen Mountain said.
He decided to punish Half-Screen Mountain. He ordered the God of Thunder to strike the
mountain with his hammer. The God of Thunder did so. The mountain split in two and half
of it fell into the valley below.
From that day on, people called it Half-Screen Mountain. It was never heard to boat
again.

additives such as aspartame and MSG (monosodium glutamate). Studies show that the

First, let’s thank Allah who has given us blessing and mercy until we can resemble

Ladies and Gentlemen:
Over last years the condition of education in this District Indramayu was the worst level ever
in West Java. It was fact that we couldn’t hide from this. Some people here thought education
was not important, enrolled their children to school was wasting time and money and big
burden to life. So this condition bred illiteracy, low awareness on education, low standard of life,
unemployment, and in the last our Human Development Index (HDI) was in the lowest level.
And so it was very difficult to apologize when every one of the outsiders, they put on us funny
labels: the region of higher rank of divorced women, the region of lowest education standard,
the region of bus songsters, and so on and so forth.
Those of you who are listening to my speech today in the projects, in this podium, in
this contest, you are on the corners, in the middle, in front of us, I understand that you feel
very sensitive when the people of this District are called outcasts, lowdown, bad condition,
they can’t make life better, and they are nothing, subclass, underclass.
So, For you all the student!
Study hard, faith with all difficulties, reach the science, and enlarge your knowledge.
Look up forward, refuse of all bad labels which has longtime they put on us.
Hold your head high, stick your chest out! It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes.
Don’t you surrender. Suffering breeds’ character, character breeds faith. In the end, faith will
not disappoint. We have a hope to develop; we have a chance to be better in education,
and in all aspect of life. And all the people need it.

I usually wake up at 8 o’clock a.m. and went to the Press


Center to check the daily schedule of briefings and press
conferences. It was usually held by the United Nation officials

Press Center to cover the press conferences of the day.

Shoichiro Honda

(1) At 15 years old, without any formal education, Honda


left home and headed to Tokyo to look for work. He obtained
an apprenticeship at a garage in 1922, and after some
hesitation over his employment, he stayed for six years,
working as a car mechanic before returning home to start
his own auto repair business in 1928 at the age of 22.
(2) Honda was born in Tenryū, Shizuoka a small village
under Mount Fuji near Hamamatsu on November 17th, 1906. Shoichiro Honda
He spent his early childhood for helping his father, Gihei, a
blacksmith, with his bicycle repair business. At the time his mother, Mika, was a weaver.
Honda was not interested with traditional education, his school handed grade reports to the
children, but required that it will be returned stamped with the family seal, to make sure that
a parent had seen it. Soichiro created a stamp to forge his family seal out of an used rubber
bicycle pedal cover. The fraud was soon discovered when Honda started to make forged
stamps for other children. Honda did not realize that the stamp had to be mirror-imaged.
(3) Shoichiro Honda was a Japanese engineer and industrialist. In 1948, he established
Honda and oversaw its expansion from a wooden shack manufacturing bicycle motors to a
multinational automobile and motorcycle manufacturer.
(4) Even as a toddler Honda had been thrilled by the first car that was ever seen in his
village and often used to say in later life that he could never forget the smell of oil it gave off.
Soichiro once borrowed one of his father’s bicycles to see a demonstration of an airplane
made by pilot Art Smith, which cemented his love for machinery and invention.

homework. The teacher asked me to read several books and make a summary about them.
When I was browsing the shelves, I found a book entitled “The inventors of Medicine”. I

That book was arranged by Edward Jenner. He was an English doctor who found
the cure for smallpox. The next one was Louis Pasteur. His interest in bacteria led him to
discover the treatments for rabies and anthrax. As Pasteur, Robert Koch’s experiments
on bacteria also proved that tuberculosis can be spread to others by contact. Finally,
there was Alexander Flemming, a British bacteriologist who found the first antibiotic and
penicillin.
After I read the book, I realized that science is useful for human kind. By studying, we
can discover things that can help human kind. Therefore, since that moment, I managed
to change my behavior and became a doctor.

Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman. He played a critical role in the
gradual transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.
In 60 BC, Caesar entered into a political alliance with Crassus and Pompey that was to
dominate Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power for themselves
through populist tactics were opposed within the Roman Senate by the conservative elite,

After assuming control of government, he began extensive reforms of Roman society and
government. He centralized the bureaucracy of the Republic and was eventually proclaimed
“dictator in perpetuity”. A group of senators, led by Marcus Junius Brutus, assassinated the
dictator on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BC, hoping to restore the constitutional government
of the Republic. However, the result was a series of civil wars, which ultimately led to the
establishment of the permanent Roman Empire by Caesar’s adopted heir Octavius (later
known as Augustus). Much of Caesar’s life is known from his own accounts of his military
campaigns, and other contemporary sources, mainly the letters and speeches of Cicero and
the historical writings of Sallust. The later biographies of Caesar by Suetonius and Plutarch

A Visit to A Wildlife Park

I recently visited Sydney with my parents. We visited many interesting places. The one
I enjoyed best was the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has a lot different Australian animals and birds. There are over 600 animals,
including kangaroos, wallabies, koala and crocodiles. They are kept in their natural surroundings.
I much preferred the Wildlife Park to a zoo where a lot of animals are in cages.
We were able to walk along the kangaroos and wallabies. We were even allowed to
touch them and to feed them. It was very exciting to be very so close to them.
We saw koala bears. They looked very cuddly. I got my photograph taken with one of
them. It is a wonderful souvenir of my holiday in Sydney.
We also went to see the crocodiles. The Wildlife Park has a lot of fresh, water and salt-
water crocodiles. Some of them were very big and scary with, huge teeth. I did not get very
close to them.
We also visited the aviary. There were some very colorful birds there. I really liked an
old parrot which could talk.
I wish we could have spent more time in the Wildlife Park. There were so much to

The Legend of Rawa Pening
Once upon a time, there was a little poor boy came into a little village. He was very
hungry and weak. He knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared
about him. Nobody wanted to help the little boy.
Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the
boy wanted to leave, this old woman gave him a “lesung”, a big wooden mortar for pounding
rice. She reminded him, “please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself. Use
this “lesung” as a boat”.
The “lesung” was happy and thanked the old woman.The little boy continued his journey.
While he was passing through the village, he saw many people gathering on the field. The
boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground. People challenged each other to pull
out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded. “Can I try?” asked the little boy. The
crowd laughed mockingly. The boy wanted to try his luck so he stepped forward and pulled
out the stick. He could do it very easily. Everybody was dumbfounded.
Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded
the village. And no one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old

High in the mountains lived a prince whose great wish was to journey to the moon,
because he loved its gentle glow. His dream finally came true. When he reached the moon
