frown. The mother-in-law

Richard asked, “But why?”
“It’s the pregnancy issue.”
Ngozi answered, looking
at him with a try-to-

mother-in-law is very con-
cerned. As you know, my
husband and I have been
married for three years
and don’t have a child yet.”
She stopped.
Tammy immediately felt
disturbed.
“So?” Richard prompted,
wondering - what has this
got to do with the church?
The woman shrugged,
“That’s just it.”
Richard leaned forward
a little, “You need to talk
to me. I know you don’t
have a child yet but what
has that got to do with the
church?”
“I’m surprised myself.”
Ngozi said.
Richard continued, “I
mean … you have just
joined the church and,”
he shrugged, “having a
child is a matter of time.
Besides, did you join the
church just so you could
have a child? Doesn’t
your mother-in-law know
that?”
“She does but,” Ngozi
looked away, “she’s of

pastor, don’t have any,

“What?” Richard was
shocked.
Tammy’s frown deep-

disbelief. She had heard
enough. She wished she
could just get up and
leave. Her face dropped.
“But that’s not true!”
Richard blurted out
without a moment’s hesi-
tation.
“That’s what I told my
husband but … you know
…” Ngozi shrugged.
“How could your mother-
in-law jump to such con-
clusions? And what’s your
husband’s stance about
it?”
“Er … well, he’s … it seems
he shares his mother’s
opinion.” She said awk-
wardly.
“He does?” Richard was
surprised.
“Yes and it’s because he’s
concerned. You see, he
likes children a lot and
the fact that he doesn’t
have his own yet is both-
ering him.” She tactically
explained to defend her
husband. “But he doesn’t
have anything against you
or the senior pastor. In fact,
we felt fulfilled at every
service since we began
to attend the church. He
loves the church.” She
added.
Tammy tightened her
lips as she thought - love
indeed.
Richard felt deflated. “I
think I’m disappointed
because you all don’t
know why the pastor has
only a child and why I
don’t have any yet.” He
said, shaking his head.
Tammy was visibly trou-
bled as she listened to the
conversation.
Richard was still talking,
“So, the two of you just
stopped coming to church
without a word to us!”
“I would have continued
coming but my husband
warned me not to.” Ngozi
revealed.
“I’m surprised that your
husband believes what
his mother said about us.
He felt this way and never
said a word about it to
the pastor or me! I’m sur-
prised.”
“He couldn’t tell you.” She
said.
“Oh, I see.” A corner of his
mouth turned up in a sad
smile. “When will he return
from work?”
“He won’t be back until
evening.”
Richard pulled his black
cell phone out from his
belt holder and began
to press, searching for a
number. “I’ll talk to him.”
Tammy was looking at
him, glad that he was
there with her to handle
the situation. He could
handle any situation and
anyone. And she was con-
fident he would tackle
this man and his mother.
His confidence was one
of the many things she
liked about him. He was
also well polished and fun
to be with, aside being
a good Christian and
husband.
As Ngozi perceived that
Richard was ready to
tackle her husband on the
matter, she quickly said, “If
that’s my husband you’re
trying to call, please don’t
let him know that I told
you what his mother said.
Just ask him why you have
not been seeing us.”
Richard nodded as he
dialed. When the call was
picked, he told Ngozi’s
husband to see him soon.
“He’s coming to see me
next Saturday.” Richard
informed Ngozi after
hanging up. “I want you
to come with him so that
we can discuss this issue
together.”
“Yes, Pastor Richard.” Ngozi
stood up. “What can I offer
you?”
Tammy instantly shook her
head without bothering
to smile. Why pretend that
she was not hurt by what
Ngozi had told them? Her
heart was heavy.
Richard smiled a little,
“No, thanks, don’t bother.
We are leaving now. Do
you mind if we pray?” He
asked, reaching out with
his hand.
Ngozi took his hand and
they all bowed their heads.
After praying with her,
Richard and Tammy left.
They entered the car and
immediately hooked the
gray seat belts. Richard
started the car and drove
out of the place, on their
way to the house of
another family without
saying anything to his
wife. He knew she was
upset by the things she’d
heard at Ngozi’s place.
He was upset too. Who
would not be? He didn’t
bother to look at Tammy.
She was probably crying
as she usually did when
someone brought up the
issue of their childless-
ness. He drove on silently,
both of them busy with
their thoughts, handling
their emotional pains.

t appears that the U.S.
government is taking
out this current eco-
nomic downturn and im-
pact of the housing melt-
down on poor immigrants
in the United States. How
else would anyone explain
the harshness of the inces-
sant increase in filing fees
for all immigration ben-
efits?
The Democrats lost the
midterm election partly
because of the fear
that they will increase
taxes, allow the Bush
tax cut to expire. The
current United States
deficit now runs in
trillions of dollars and
the people are hurting
under the weight of
unemployment, taxes
and the failure of the
stimulus package. The
cry of the American
people seems to have
gotten to the President
the hard way and now
he seems to be con-
sidering extending the
Bush tax cut temporar-
ily for all Americans.
Unfortunately, there is
no one to advocate for
immigrants about the
back door tax increase
called immigration
filing fee increase.
Immigrants in the
United States have now
become the American
piggy bank. This is not
fair. While the White
House is consider-
ing lowering taxes for
all Americans to gal-
vanize the economy
through the outcry of
the Tea Party and the
Republican Party, the
Department of Home-
land Security is taxing
the immigrants beyond
measure.

family. We are supposed to
get together with our family
for the
holidays. Any sugges-

A. It can be very challeng-
ing for family members
who do not see your child
on
a regular basis, to under-
stand his particular needs.
It is even more challenging
for your son to tolerate
new people, new sounds,
new food, and a new envi-
ronment.
Top that off with adults,
who do not understand his
condition, and who pro-
claim that
“if that was my child”,
“he’s just rude,” and “stop
acting like a baby etc.”

For many the end of every
year always brings with it
lots of stress and anxiety.
It would seem that often
times even our best efforts
to try to make our Christ-
mas and New Year cele-
brations a time of joy and
festivities, are not enough
to erase the pressures of
the season. Shopping in
crowded malls, maneuver-
ing through traffic, trying
to stretch dollars and
maxing out credit cards to
make the “season bright”
for ourselves and our loved
ones is stressful. Along the
way, we lose our joy and
the celebration seems way
too short-lived in com-
parison to the amount of
energy and time invested.
A mixed-up priorities scale
is the culprit for a lot of
the stress we experience.
The truth is that we over-
work and overdo, trying to
fulfill everyone’s expecta-
tion. In the end, very little
is gained as the unfulfilled
expectations remain.
We live in a fast-paced,
high-speed world. Work
and “busy work” have
crowded our days, and
have become our top pri-
orities. Even during those
times when we should be
able to sit back and relax
and enjoy the moment,
we can’t. We are too busy
planning and thinking
about the next thing we
must do. As a result, we
have unintentionally ne-
glected the three most
important elements of our
priority scale: God, our-
selves, and family.
However, we have learned
to play the compensation
game well. When tragedy
strikes or if things sud-
denly go wrong, we try

to compensate by giving
God our undivided atten-
tion. This is why in funeral
services often the loudest
mourners are the people
who did not take the time
to show the one who is
now dead that they cared
enough. It really doesn’t
matter how long and loud
we mourn we have eter-
nally missed the opportu-
nity to show that we cared.
A resident of New York, I
was awed by the sudden
burst of spiritually that this
city went through after
the September 11 attacks.
Churches were overflow-
ing; people were praying
Is it any wonder that we keep running around in the same circles of
spiritual emptiness, physical lethargy, and emotional disconnect? We
have created those circles for ourselves and we just keep moving from
one deadly circle to another.

encouraged to allow a few
moments of spiritual re-
flection to help students
cope with the tragedy.
But, months later it was
back to business as usual.
It seems that unless we are

is little time for peaceful
meditation and gratitude.
The same happens within
families. Often times
because we allow life to
get in the way, we fail to
keep in touch with each
other as we should. Not
until there is a funeral or a
wedding do we find our-
selves obligated to recon-
nect. And even with the
family members we live
with, we only go through
the motions required for
having to share the same
living space. Parents often
feel that putting a roof
over their children’s heads,
placing food on the table
and getting clothes on
their backs are enough.
Yet, parents can provide
all of these and children
will still go astray and seek
to find emotional connec-
tion they don’t receive at
home in gang activities
and crooked friends.
When it comes to taking
care of self, we do the
same. We do not eat for
health and self-preserva-
tion but for sport. Exercise
is just out of the question,
there is simply no time.
We allow our minds to be
exposed to toxic people
and entertainment. We
become addicted to poi-
sonous substances and
habits as a way of escape.
We have several jobs, sleep
little, and have no mean-
ingful human connections
that can uplift us emo-
tionally. We have become
the proverbial rats spin-
ning in the rat race. Life
is often meaningless and
pointless and when those
few opportunities come
around to relax, enjoy and
celebrate with family and
friends, we can’t do it. So
we spoil our own joy by
running around buying
things and doing things
and attending to activities
that in the end we do not
really enjoy.
Is it any wonder that we
keep running around in
the same circles of spiri-
tual emptiness, physical
lethargy, and emotional
disconnect? We have
created those circles for
ourselves and we just
keep moving from one
deadly circle to another.
What if we were to try to
refocus? One day at a time.
What if we took the time
to write a “To Do List” that
is meaningful. Let’s write
in activities that include
the right order of priori-
ties: GOD – SELF - OTHERS.
What activities can we
do to connect with God
more? Do we need to start
reading the Bible? Do
we need to go to church
more? Do we need to join
a Bible study group? Do
we need to listen to God
more through prayer?
What activities can we do
to connect with ourselves
more? Do we need to find
the time to go out and ex-
ercise and get in shape? Do
we need to invest in some
“me time” and just sit back
with a cup of tea, a good
book and relax? Do we
need to revisit that hobby
that we loved doing but
abandoned because there
was no time?
What do activities do we
need to connect with
those closest to us more?
Do we need to stop
“talking at” our children
and listen to them more?
Do we need to invest in
family time and really
just enjoy being with
each other? Do we need
to work out schedules
where the family sits at the
dinner table together at
least 3 times a week?
It is possible to enjoy life
and celebrate the good
times when they come,
but for this to happen we
must make a conscious
effort to re-prioritize. The
people that really matter
must always come first,
everything else takes a
second place. Perhaps if
we begin to write that list
today, by the time 2011
rolls around we could
already be enjoying the
benefits of a much more
fulfilling life.

college, a group of
students staged a
melodrama titled
‘Kiloku’as part of the
freshmen orientation
program. The story
centered on a promis-
ing young man named
‘Kiloku’ who went so-
journing in a distant
land with a mission to
learn blacksmithing
and procure a price-
less commodity called
the golden egg. On the
day Kiloku was setting
out on his mission,
the whole of his clan
gathered to send him
forth with wishes and
prayers that the shining
star will come back
home someday with
the lost treasure from
the distant land and
bring glory and honour
to his homeland. The
elders advised him to
always remember his
roots, and be focused
on his mission all
through the sojourn,
