Concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates. The paste, composed of Portland cement and
water, covers the surface of the fine and coarse aggregates. Through hydration, the paste
hardens and strengthens to form the mass known as concrete.
The design of this material plays an important role in the development of civil engineering
in our country; therefore, future engineers should know about this topic, although it is not
uncommon that, these continue to emphasize it.
With the mixture, the desired workability is obtained. With the careful dosing and mixing
of the ingredients, the engineer will obtain their fresh, strong and durable concrete, and
the necessary strength; thus achieving a stable and hardened concrete.
The concrete mix is approximately 10 to 15% cement, 60 to 75% aggregates and 15 to 20%
water. The mixture that does not have enough paste to fill all the gaps between the
aggregates, is difficult to place and produces rough surfaces in the form of porous concrete
honeycomb, and a mixture with an excess of paste will be easy to place and will produce a
smooth surface; however, it is likely that the resulting concrete will shrink more and be
less cheap.
Engineers do not just use concrete for building constructions; they also use it in hydraulic
works, bridges, sidewalks, roads, among others. With the purpose of providing solutions to
the problems that affect the quality of life of the population; showing themselves interest in
theirs problems.

Concrete is one of the most used materials in civil works today; defined as a mixture that
occurs between portland cement, water and aggregates. Through mixing, a concrete is
obtained with certain properties that allow this material to be used in various structures,
providing security due to its hardness and resistance. So that the result of the mixture
obtains these properties and can be used; This must be inspected to verify that the quantity
of each one of its components is the indicated one to achieve an optimum dosage;
otherwise, poor management can cause structural and economic losses. So students and
civil construction professionals should be and be able to make decisions that intervene
positively in the process of mixing this material.

El concreto es una de los materiales más utilizados hoy en día en las obras civiles;
definido como una mezcla que se da entre el cemento portland, agua y agregados. Por
medio del mezclado se obtiene un concreto con ciertas propiedades que permiten que, este
material sea empleado en diversas estructuras, proporcionando seguridad debido a su
dureza y resistencia. Para que el resultado de la mezcla obtenga estas propiedades y pueda
ser utilizado; este debe ser inspeccionado para corroborar que la cantidad de cada uno de
sus componentes es la indicada para lograr una óptima dosificación; de lo contrario, un mal
manejo puede provocar pérdidas a nivel estructural y económico. Por lo que los estudiantes
y profesionales de construcción civil deben ser y estar capacitados para tomar decisiones
que intervengan de forma positiva en el proceso de mezclado de este material.
