SPEAKING

Task 1: Read the following dialog. Take turns reading it.

Ami : Riza, look! That heroic monument stands high and strong.

Riza : Hmm…. It is a remembrance for us to our heroes’ struggle on this country.

Ami : Yeah, many of them became casualties of the war.

Riza : I had an unforgettable experience there.

Ami : Really? What was it?

Riza : When I was in Junior High School, my school held a program called “Keep our city
clean and green!”

Ami : What did you do?

Riza : My schoolmates, my teachers, and I rallied in the monument area at 6 a.m and began to
clean the area around the monument until it’s clean and tidy.

Ami : That’s a very good program.

Riza : Yes, it was. We also planted some trees around it.

Task 2: Sharing an experience Do you still remember the boy’s experience you just listened
to? You can make a new recount text based on the boy’s experience, treating it as if it were
your own experience.

Imagine that you were the boy who had to continue the trip after staying overnight in the
village. Tell your imaginary experience based on the last part of the story. Do that in groups
of four students. Follow the instructions below:

1. Remember the story you just listened to.

2. Retell the story. Each member of the group takes turns saying one sentence

3. The first student says one sentence to begin retelling the story. (The first sentence should
serve as the orientation).

4. The second student continues saying the next sentence containing the next event.

5. The third student goes on saying the following event and so does the fourth student.
6. Continue doing that until the story is finished.

7. After that, based on the last part of the story, the group begins to make up the group’s own
story.

8. Do that by taking turns saying one sentence.

9. When the teacher says that the time is up the group stop doing the activity.

10.Present ‘your experience’ during the battle of Surabaya in front of the class.

Task 3: Speaking Game

Play this game in groups of four students. Divide each group into halves. Each half opposes
the other half. Now do the following things:

a. Read the Battle of Surabaya again carefully.

b. Choose the words that you like. You must know the meaning of the chosen words.

c. Then, take turns telling your opposing partners to make sentences based on the words that
you chose. Those who can make communicative sentences get score. Each communicative
sentence will get 100. Don’t forget to count the minutes used to make it. You can decide the
length of time for making one sentence.

d. The winners are those who can make more sentences in less time.

WRITING

Write a recount text. You can rewrite the chronology of the battle of Surabaya. If you
choose that, read the passage again and the task on text structure on page 124, then close the
book. Now try to rewrite the chronology of the events in the Battle of Surabaya using your
own words.

You can also rewrite the experience of the boy you listened to (LISTENING on page
129), or the one your group created (SPEAKING task 3 on page 130), or write your own
experience. The experience can be a real or an imaginary one.

Study again the following arrangement of ideas in a recount text to help you write the
recount text:

Riza: Hmm .... Ini adalah kenangan bagi kita untuk perjuangan para pahlawan kita di negara
ini.
Ami: Ya, banyak dari mereka menjadi korban perang.
Riza: Saya punya pengalaman tak terlupakan di sana.
Ami: Benarkah? Apa itu?
Riza: Ketika saya masih di SMP, sekolah saya mengadakan program yang disebut "Jaga kota
kita tetap bersih dan hijau!"
Ami: Apa yang kamu lakukan?
Riza: Teman sekolahku, guruku, dan aku berunjuk rasa di area tugu pukul 6 pagi dan mulai
membersihkan area di sekitar tugu itu sampai bersih dan rapi.
Ami: Itu program yang sangat bagus.
Riza: Ya, benar. Kami juga menanam beberapa pohon di sekitarnya.

Tugas 2: Berbagi pengalaman Apakah Anda masih ingat pengalaman bocah lelaki yang baru
saja Anda dengarkan? Anda dapat membuat teks penghitungan ulang baru berdasarkan
pengalaman bocah itu, memperlakukannya seolah-olah itu adalah pengalaman Anda sendiri.

Bayangkan Anda adalah bocah lelaki yang harus melanjutkan perjalanan setelah bermalam di
desa. Ceritakan pengalaman imajiner Anda berdasarkan bagian terakhir cerita. Lakukan itu
dalam kelompok yang terdiri dari empat siswa. Ikuti instruksi di bawah ini:

1. Ingat cerita yang baru saja Anda dengarkan.

2. Ceritakan kembali kisahnya. Setiap anggota kelompok bergiliran mengucapkan satu

6. Terus lakukan itu sampai cerita selesai.
7. Setelah itu, berdasarkan bagian terakhir dari cerita, grup mulai mengarang cerita grup
sendiri.
8. Lakukan itu dengan bergiliran mengucapkan satu kalimat.
9. Ketika guru mengatakan bahwa waktunya habis, kelompok berhenti melakukan kegiatan.
10. Sajikan 'pengalaman Anda' selama pertempuran Surabaya di depan kelas.

Tugas 3: Game Bicara

Mainkan game ini dalam kelompok yang terdiri dari empat siswa. Bagilah setiap kelompok
menjadi dua bagian. Masing-masing setengah menentang setengah lainnya. Sekarang lakukan
hal-hal berikut:

a. Baca Pertempuran Surabaya lagi dengan cermat.

b. Pilih kata yang Anda suka. Anda harus tahu arti dari kata-kata yang dipilih.
c. Kemudian, bergiliran memberi tahu mitra lawan Anda untuk membuat kalimat
berdasarkan kata-kata yang Anda pilih. Mereka yang bisa membuat kalimat komunikatif
mendapat skor. Setiap kalimat komunikatif akan mendapatkan 100. Jangan lupa menghitung
menit yang digunakan untuk membuatnya. Anda dapat menentukan lamanya waktu untuk
membuat satu kalimat.
d. Pemenangnya adalah mereka yang dapat membuat lebih banyak kalimat dalam waktu yang
lebih singkat.
PENULISAN
Tulis teks recount. Anda dapat menulis ulang kronologi pertempuran Surabaya. Jika
Anda memilih itu, bacalah bagian itu lagi dan tugas tentang struktur teks pada halaman 124,
lalu tutup buku. Sekarang cobalah menulis ulang kronologi peristiwa dalam Pertempuran
Surabaya menggunakan kata-kata Anda sendiri.

Anda juga dapat menulis ulang pengalaman anak lelaki yang Anda dengarkan
(MENDENGARKAN halaman 129), atau yang dibuat oleh grup Anda (BERBICARA tugas 3
di halaman 130), atau menulis pengalaman Anda sendiri. Pengalaman itu bisa nyata atau
imajiner.
