Today, Dr. William (“Bill”) Moreau filed a lawsuit against the United States Olympic &
Paralympic Committee (“USOC”) in the District Court for the City and County of Denver,
Colorado. Dr. Moreau is represented by the civil rights law firm KILLMER, LANE & NEWMAN,
LLP. The USOC illegally fired Dr. Moreau in retaliation for his whistleblowing at the USOC.

Dr. Moreau successfully worked as the Vice President of Sports Medicine for the USOC
until May 2019. During that time, Dr. Moreau repeatedly urged upper-level USOC management
to better protect athletes’ health and safety. For example, Dr. Moreau pressed the USOC to
finally shield its young female athletes from sexual abuse. He sought to remedy the USOC’s
failure to treat athletes’ serious mental health conditions. He urged the USOC to end its practice
of creating incomplete medical records for patients, thereby putting athlete-patients in danger. He
urged USOC sports performance staff to stop wrongly accessing patients’ medical files, in
violation of patients’ privacy rights. Angry about Dr. Moreau’s insistence that these and other
problems be addressed, the USOC fired him, in violation of public policy and Colorado law.

The USOC has an extensive history of prioritizing medal-count and money over the
athletes themselves. This includes the tragic sexual abuse Larry Nassar perpetrated on countless
young women who the USOPC and USA Gymnastics were supposed to protect. The USOC’s
continued failings have correctly been the subject of intensive bipartisan congressional
investigations and federal bipartisan legislation.

According to Dr. Moreau’s attorney, Darold Killmer: “As a whistleblower, Dr. Moreau is
a public servant of the highest order. Dr. Moreau courageously pressed the USOC to meet its
obligations to protect athletes and follow the law. Dr. Moreau had an impeccable performance
history at the USOC. Unfortunately, instead of listening to him and protecting the safety of
athletes and following the law, the USOC doubled-down on its ingrained culture of retaliation by
illegally firing him. This lawsuit takes the lid off of the coverup.”

Dr. Moreau stated “I hope that my lawsuit will push the USOC to finally take
accountability for its past mistakes and change for the better. This case is not only about the way
the USOC treated me, it is also about protecting the athletes that the USOC has for too long
knowingly put in harm’s way. The time has come to shine a light on the USOC’s long practice of
prioritizing medals and money over the rights and wellbeing of athletes and retaliating against
the people who object to improper or illegal practices.”
