THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
FASHION AND ARCHITECTURE

ABSTRACT:
This research describes the nature of the relationship between fashion and architectural design. The
most logical relationship is that both fashion and architecture provide a shelter for people in different
social dimensions. Both fields passed through several era were design transits from the complexity to
the modernity and simplicity of design. On the other hand, there are many similarities in materials
characteristics although both fields use totally different martial on different scale. In addition, there are
many examples that show the effect of one field on the other one. Many architects are inspired by a
garment to design a building and it is the same in the other way around. So, this study explores if these
two fields have any effect on each other. so how these effects are reflected at the end.
Fashion and architecture two fields are completely different and independent from each other’s. The
first is about to build our environment and the another one is to fit clothes on human body. In fact, both
industries have completely different type of materials construction, techniques, and even function; but
they can meet in the case of concept design. In addition, these two fields are affected by the time,
culture, society, technology, materials, science ...etc. These two fields have many similarities for
example the relationship between art, design, technology, and science. On the other hand, both fashion
and architecture for human being by providing a shelter. In fashion, shelter is defined on an individual
scale which means on human body is covers in a small scale. while in architecture, the shelter is defined
on an enlarge scale. Although the similarities mentioned above have difference in scale, proportion,
materials, pattern and size. In addition, fashion design has a short duration life, each season we have a
new collection, while architecture have much longer duration and everlasting materials.

As Coco Channel said: "Fashion is Architecture, it's a matter of proportion".

The Research Objectives
The research has three main objectives
· To highlight the historic relationship between fashion and architecture `throughout materials, the
development of these materials features and the invention for new ones in both fields
· The use of space finishing materials, building facade, skin, color, and the technological aspect and
particular use in features.
· To explain how fashion and architecture and how these two fields get inspired and affected by each
other.

The Research Methodology:

In order to achieve research objectives this Research adopted a qualitative method. The research will be
oriented to theoretical approach. Supported with example analysis, enriched with observation for fields
of fashion and architecture. Comparison study deals to show similarities between both fields. Since the
topics are boarded, will start by definition, historical overview, and concept then materials comparison.
Investigation for several materials' characteristics used in fashion and architecture through form, fabric,
texture, glossiness, fluidity, transparency, pattern, glossiness.

The Interrelationship between Fashion and Architecture

Materials Characteristics Similarities

CONCLUSION:
After analyzing many cases in both fashion and architecture, the several important similarity between
these two profession are accepted one of the similarities that is worth to mention is that they both are
benefiting of the existence of relationship between art, science and technology; these three are effecting
architecture and fashion in a way that somehow a bridge between them to benefit from each other
techniques, materials and concepts. Architectures and Fashion provide shelter to human in different
scales (architecture in a scale larger than fashion). Architecture protects them from natural phenomena
and creates a safe and private environment for them. While fashion on the other hand provides a shelter
as a second skin (a shelter for human body). Architecture as a "third skin" is surrounding human body
with the space around it, and people move around and spend time there.
The study also reveals several differences in proportion, scale, materials and forms. The major difference
between fashion and architecture is that the first one gets change in each reason but architecture has more
permanent existence (its duration is longer). But both of them are affected by time and every day we
have something new simpler and easier to be used. People face many invention and innovation designs
which help human borings in much way of inspiration, imagination and creativity.

The actual implementation of fashion into architecture

Example 1: fashion technology park, Mohali

 the project shows justification to the

tile fashion as it represents similarities
between garments and architecture.
 Façade shows punctures and
follows some pattern throughout the
campus.
 The arrangement of pattern and the
cuts which are given on the façade
shows very much similarities to the
fashion.
 The cuts and pattern give symbolic
look to it.

Figure 1:the view of fashion technology park

5
 Whole campus represents
the same theme.
 The plates give definite look
to each building.
 The punctures help to derive
light and also give it a different
look.
 The curve roof of
knowledge zone represents the
fluidity of garments.
 The lay of material and color
also give it an identity,

Example 2: pearl academy, Jaipur, Rajasthan

 The fluidity of structure

gives it organic form which
resembles to fluidity of garments.
 The green patch and road
connectivity also create a pattern
and give boundary to spaces.

6
 The open to sky courtyard in the campus
form puncture in the building. This informal,
organic form of courtyard cut out force to think that
it is very much similar to cut out in garments.

 The outer façade of the structure follows

pattern which is also very common in
dresses.
 This jaalis form pattern which is followed by
whole campus and form a theme.
 Jaalis which are used as environmental and
cultural factor indirectly resembles to the
fashion.

 They have informal and

organic cutouts to the whole
structure and this looks like
inspiration has been taken from
fashion.

Example 3: fashion hub thesis project

 the project is very organic, free

flowing the way like garments are.
 The landscape and structure form a
space by dividing line of green
boundaries which are also organic and
seems like punctures on the site.
 The façade follows very much
variety by following specific pattern
which are also used in terms of an
environment and according to climate.
 The roof also shows curvatures
which are again to continue it with
fluidity.

 Every space has cutout in them

just like every outfit has.
 The structures give definite
boundary to green spaces and
water body.
 The color and variety of
materials also play an important
role in this fashion hub.

8
 the exhibition area is
inspired from collar.
 The shades give it
different look all
together.
 Color usage shows
similarities to clothing.
 This is very
interesting as
transparency of material
plays with shadow of
color.

 The curve roof has

been used in which
tubular sections are
used in geometric
pattern which also
seems like net used
in clothes.
 It gives the feeling
of net.
 The specific pattern
are used for each
spaces.
 The roofs have
cutout which are
used as skylight and
resembles cutout in
clothes.
 The spaces form
central point which
are dominating just
like every dress has
its main design which give a perfect look to outfit and act as attraction to dress.

9
 This fashion hub justify its title which use all inspiration from clothing like fluidity, color,
structure, pattern, cutouts, boundaries, highlighted areas, joints, central attraction, transparancy,
texture, material and everything.
