Document code: Design Specification:
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this specification is to stablish the colour codes corresponding to materials and wall thicknesses
(schedule) of pipes, fittings, valves, nuts and bolts that the Suppliers shall use for their later identification in the
construction warehouses of Engineering Companies or Repsol YPF’s warehouses, and also for their
identification during the construction as far as possible.
The marking indicated in this specification is regardless of another established on the material standard.
This document is part of the latest edition of the Repsol YPF technical specifications, and likewise, refers to the
latest edition of the mentioned and/or applicable Standards and Codes, as well as the stipulations of the
document named “Basic Design Data (BDD)” which gathers the individual aspects for each project.
In the event of discrepancy between the above indicated documents the following precedence shall prevail:
• BDP (Basic Design Package) of the Project (if it exists)
• BDD of the Project
• This specification
2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Each pipe and/or fitting shall be marked with two continuous painted bands throughout all its length (see
paragraph 4). Bolts shall be painted at their end that does not have the quality mark (to see point 4.5). Nuts
shall be painted in one of their faces so that it does not hamper their insertion within the bolt.
Details for pipes and fittings:
• Bands shall be painted only in pipes of 2” of diameter and greater.
• For pipes of 1½” and minors these colour bands could be omitted provided that their are supplied packed
with a band around or in packages. In these cases the identification label or the wood box shall be painted with
the corresponding colour band.
• Each painted band shall have a wide of 10 mm.
• The painting shall be of good quality and outdoor resistant.
• For pipes or fittings made of austenitic steel, the painting shall not contain injurious elements or metallic

• The marks that are specified here are independent of the ones that shall be indicated in the materials in
agreement with its quality standard.
• In addition to the painted bands indicated in point 4, each pipe of 2” and greater shall be marked with the
authentication code of wall thickness indicated in point 5, repeating it throughout the pipe and/or fitting every
meter (approximately) of its length.
• The painting for wall thickness identification shall have a colour that could be easily distinguished from the
longitudinal band colours.
