Lesson Plan: Body in the Group

Learner Outcomes

Personal and Social Responsibility

General Learner Expectations: “The child contributes to group activities”

Specific Learner Expectations: Listens to peers and adults, works cooperatively
in a group, joins in some large group games and activities

Report Card Connections: Citizenship in Learning - “Works and collaborates

effectively with others”

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will continue practicing maintaining a

comfortable physical presence around others (in all areas of the classroom – in
line walking the halls, gym class, playing at centers, etc.).

Connecting back to the circle of courage, it is important for students to practice

the idea of belonging. Each child should make an effort to put themselves near
other children and recognize that “I am an important part of a group”.

Both of these concepts activate prior knowledge the students have learned and
focused on.

Assessment

Oral Questioning – During the story, I will ask students questions to understand
their prior knowledge and what they learned during and after the story has been
read.
Observation – During the freeze dance portion, watch if students are
implementing the concept during the game. Asking students to use their eyes
and see if they are a part of the group will be a form of self-assessment.

Personalization/Differentiation

Variety in tasks – Will read the book to the students and then have them do a
dancing activity. This way, students will have both quiet and active times during
the activity.

Intro

• Intro the activity to the students – remind them of expectations (hands locked,
sitting legs crossed, raising hands to ask questions, etc.).
• “Today, we are reading about Evan, Ellie, Jesse, and Molly going on an
underwater adventure. We will be learning about the phrase “body in the
group”
• Ask the students introductory questions about the book
o What do you see?
o What are the kids thinking about?

Body/Activity

• Read the story to the students, ask them specific questions

o Do you see any groups? What sea creatures are not in a group?
o Highlight facial expressions of children, how are they feeling? Why are
they feeling uncomfortable or happy?
o What happens when you are too far from the group?
o What do you think is going to happen?
• After reading the story, explain the expectations for the special “freeze dance”
game (we maintain our space in the group, using our eyes, no floor dancing,
etc.).
• Use the book as a way to show how to maintain space in the group.

Conclusion

During the FREEZE and at the end of the game, ask students to look and use
their eyes to see if they are still “in the group”, whose body is still in the group?
Did anybody dance out? The goal of the activity is to observe and discuss what
happened during the activity.
