State Bridge Design Engineer
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit (GEU) and Structure Design Unit (SDU) have completed the
new LRFD Driven Pile Foundation Design Policy, Load Request Form and Structural Resistance
Charts.
The following is a summaryof the GEU procedurefor designing driven pile foundations in
accordance with the newpolicy.
1. Detenninefactoredstructuralresistancefor the selectedpile type and smallestpossible
pile size. The nominal compressiveresistancechart for steel piles and the factored
compressiveresistancefrom the interactiondiagramsfor concretepiles developedby
SDU may be used at designer'sdiscretionto estimatepreliminary pile axial structural
resistance.
2. Detenninefactoredgeotechnicalresistancebasedon drivability an~lysis.
