All parts of a question should be answered at one place
Attempt all questions

1 A transmission line is 40m long and has Vg  150 0 , Z 0  30  j 60  , VL  5  480 V . If 5

the line is matched to the load. Calculate (a) the input impedance Z in (b) the sending end
current I in and voltage Vin (c) the propagation constant 

2 A transmission line of length l , characterized by  and Z 0 , connected to a load Z l . Derive 5

the expressions for input impedance and average input power of that line.

3 Explain the concept of Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) with mathematical analysis. A lossless 5
line having Z 0  400  is terminated by unknown load impedance, SWR = 3.2 and the 1st
voltage maximum is located at 20 cm from load. Calculate frequency and Z l

4 Show that a generating plant having N sections bus bars rated at Q kVA with x % reactance, 5
connected on the tie bar system through bus bar reactance of b % has a total short circuit
kVA on one section of

 Q Q( N  1) 
 x  bN  x   100

If the section rating is 60,000 kVA, x  30% and b  15% . Find the short circuit kVA with
(a) 3 sections (b) 9 sections (c) show that with a very large number of sections the short
circuit kVA would not exceed 6,00,000 kVA.

5 A 10 kVA, 13.8 kV turbo-generator having X 1  X 2  15% and X 0  5% is about to be

connected to a power system. The generator has current limiting reactor of 0.7Ω in the
neutral. Before the generator is connected to the system, its voltage is adjusted to 13.2 kV,
when a double line to ground fault develops at terminals b and c. Find fault current in each
