AIM: Use of waste plastic as binding material in pavement
block.

INTRODUCTION
1.1Background to the study
Plastic waste is a significant portion of the total municipal solid
waste. Therefore there should be the need for proper waste
management system.
Solid waste Management is one of the major environmental
concern in Ghana. Landfills are becoming scare and the cost in
building landfills sites are increasing. The only once we have
here is the dumping site which is been managed by the MMDAs
and some sanitation agencies.
During transportation of wastes from home and industries by
this sanitation agencies to the dumping sites some fallout from
the trucks into gutters. More over plastics are being littered
misused all over the country and now causing threat to the
Nation. Some of these problem associated with plastic waste in
Ghana includes:

1. Plastics block drains gutters and causes floods.

2. Plastic bottles and containers act as breeding grounds for the
mosquitoes when filled with rain water.
3. Plastic release toxic gases into atmosphere when burnt.
High density polyethylene (HDPE) waste in used in making
bags and dustbins. These material serve as an alternative for
the metallic dustbin and leather bags .
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) based waste, high density
polyethylene (HDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
waste bottles , polypropylene fibres.

Hence waste PET plastic can therefore, be mixed in concrete

mass in some form, without significant effect on its other
properties or slight compromise in strength (Polymer
Modified Concrete).
In this study waste Voltic bottles found on KNUST campus
were shredded into flakes and was used in the production of
pavement block.
OBJECTIVE
 The aim of this research is to determine the suitability of
waste voltic bottles (PET bottles ) in the development of
pavement block for construction.
 To prepare various proportions of polymer modified
pavement blocks using recycled PET .
 To determine the durability of pavement block in acidic
medium.
 To determine the engineering property (Compressive
Strength ) of samples prepared of polymer modified
pavement blocks.
METHODOLOGY

 How to transform plastic waste into paver blocks

 How to make the melting barrel
 How to make the mould
 How to know how much sand you will need
 Select the right plastic
LITERATURE REVIEW
 (Asnani,2006) in Ghana, solid waste management is among
the primary essential services provided by municipal
authorities in the country to keep urban centers clean.
However, It is among the most poorly rendered services in
Ghana. Systems applied are not scientific, outdated and
inefficient, population coverage is low.
 (Wusu-Sekyere Ebenezer,2013).Economic growth and
changing consumption patterns are resulting in the rapid
increase in the use of plastics in the world. The consumption
of plastic material has increased from 5 million tones in the
1950s to 100 million tones in the 2000s.
 (Fredrick,2015). In consist plastics, the amount of plastic
waste in ever Ghana, about 10 to 15 % of our municipal solid
wastes produced increasing of due to human population,
developmental activities and changes in lifestyle and socio-
economic condition.
 (Welle,2011).Fortunately, there are various ways in which
plastics could be reuse or converted to other products.
