Embroidery Designs For The Creative Mind
Christmas Potpourri Ornaments
By Kara Sutton
Materials:
½ yard nylon tulle 54” wide, enough for 5 ornaments (we chose
glittered) to coordinate with the metallic embroidery thread.
Wash Away mesh stabilizer
Dry potpourri pelts 4.5 oz
Metallic thread
Thread
505 spray adhesive
Glitter
Ornament Hooks
Special tools:
Embroidery Machine handles a 5x7 to a 8x10 hoop
Sewing Machine
Zipper Foot
Heat tool for cutting plastic sheets
Turning tool/tube
Funnel
Let’s Begin:
1.
Choose an ornament from the Christmas Ornaments Throw
Collection. Hoop 2 layers of the Wash Away mesh stabilizer
along with 2 layers of the tulle(not hooped but either basted in
out using the 505 spray to anchor into the hoop. We used a
large hoop and did 2 at one time. You will need 2 designs
stitched per ornament.
We also used clips on the sides of the hoop to keep the tulle
from getting in the stitching.
2.
Stitch all your ornament designs.
Once stitched remove from hoop and cut away excess Wash
Away. We did not cut the tulle into smaller sections but simply
moved it around to stitch the ornaments onto empty sections.
You will need at least 1” between the ornaments for the seam
allowance.
3.
Once you have stitched out all the ornaments and have
trimmed away the excess Wash Away Stabilizer, run it through
the wash on a delicate, warm water setting. Dry on low about 15
minutes and then press from back side on medium heat into a
slightly padded surface to smooth and finish drying the designs.
4.
We cut the ornaments from the tulle in groups of 2, and then
folded the tulle in half with right sides together to stitch the
ornaments halves together. Put right sides together, pinning at
4 points, through all layers, to secure while stitching together.
Make sure to match the stitching of the designs as closely as
possible.
Use a zipper foot to stitch around the ornament without
stitching through the embroidery. Leave the top open, start
stitching at the curve of where the top starts around to the
opposite side, backstitching at the beginning and end.
5.
Trim seam allowance to ¼” all the way around the ornament
including the top neck portion. Turn right side out by gently
working it through the neck opening of the ornament. We used
a tube turning tool to get it started.
6.
Now, let’s fill her up. Insert your funnel into the neck of the
ornament and start pouring the potpourri pelts into the
ornament.
NOTE: Potpourri pelts available at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
7.
Once you have it all full, pinch the top closed and stitch closed
through all layers using a zipper foot on your machine.
8.
Around the neck and top of the ornament you will want to trim
away as much of the excess tulle without cutting into the actual
embroidery. Using the heat tool go around the neck/top to melt
away any excess tulle pokies. Using the tool to melt a hole
through the hanging loop makes it easier to insert an ornament
hook to hang your ornament on your tree.
9.
We decided to add a little more sparkle so we sprayed the
ornaments lightly with the 505 spray and lightly dusting with
glitter for just that extra glitz.
We hope you enjoy this project. We chose the potpourri pelts
for their color, but you can choose for the scent too. A couple
other thoughts and ideas, is to use cotton balls to stuff the
ornaments instead of the sniffy stuff. AND this technique will
allow you to do the same thing using different designs such as
snowflakes, angels, etc. that are not FSL already. How fun is
that?!
