DATA AND HOW IT CHANGED NONPROFIT BUSINESS

Everything around us produces data. For instance, there are satellites that
receive and transmit signals in a heartbeat to send your tweets. However, there is more
to data than mere texts and digits. To make sense out of it, people started creating
analytics around them. Aside from making communication and disseminating
information a lot easier, data-based decisions have become an efficient way for
organizations to conduct their business. As such, nonprofit sector must take into
account data when making any decision. Through this, they will have an even deeper
understanding of the negative and positive effects of a particular choice.

Most nonprofits often believe that heart warming stories on how their
organization was able to help the community are enough in order to encourage other
people to make donations. However, the truth is that these stories can only do so
much. What potential donors need are irrefutable proofs to support the stories the
nonprofit will present. As they say, numbers don’t lie. That is why the analysis of data
will give potential donors a more objective proof of the organization’s contribution to
the development of the society. This, in turn, will better motivate potential donors.

Analyzing data may help nonprofits listen to their donors without them having to
say anything. If nonprofits would interpret data, they will discover that most donors
donate after working or business hours. It is when they are at home at night that they
give gifts. With this data, the nonprofit can conclude that the donors will be needing
assistance and information not during office hours but at night. Thus, they can make
arrangements to meet donor demands and needs accordingly. They may also use it in
order to expand their reach.

Donor targeting is also improved by studying available data. With data, the
nonprofit will be able to identify certain or specific type of donors who wants to join
their endeavour. Knowing the type of donor is important so the nonprofit can employ
the right strategies that will appeal to that specific type of donor. This will surely result
to an increase in the participation of donors. Data can also tell the momentum of
nonprofit. This can help the organization identify the areas where the resources must
be applied or where resources are needed.

The time when nonprofits relay on mere intuition and guesswork to address
problems has come to an end because of availability of data. Nonprofits must invest
time for data collection. The valuable time spent for data collection will not be in vain as
the data collected will be useful in deciding on what actions to take or the
improvements which must be made. These data may also be used in selecting and
planning the interventions which the nonprofit can pursue in order to improve.
